The woman took off her glass and cleaned it while saying, "I understand so Mrs. Meldia. Of course, our company requires passionate workers, however you are just not even remotely close to our lowest standard. I don't think you are fit for this job at all. You are welcome to g..." She made a gesture to tell me to go, without even making any eye contact at all. Damn you red, Rosa. But just as she was about to finish her sentence.
"You are welcome to work for us." Suddenly a husky voice came out of nowhere which made all of us jumped from our seats.
Chapter 4: The Luck
My jaw dropped as soon as I saw the figure emerging from the sofa. Tall, dark, with impossibly luscious hair and beautiful sharp features.
"You are...the one in the elevator." I could barely push the air from my lungs out to my mouth. "Why is he here?"
Red Rosa and the other three men were stunned. They turned around and immediately stood up when they saw him. "Mr. Hunter, how are you doing sir?" They bowed their head down and greeted him. Red Rosa's face was turning red as well. Her confidence was now gone! Dissipated into nothingness.
"Phew!" I sighed in relief. "So it's not just me."
"B...but Mr. Hunter. She doesn't have any special attributes that could help our company. If we blindfolded ourselves and shot a dart into the files on the table, I am sure we would find someone better than her." Rosa looked up at the young man before her while criticizing me. Oh, just shut up Rosa.
My slow mind began to catch up. "Wait. Mr. Hunter? As in Bradian Hunter? The CEO of HB? Oh my god! I heard that he was young, but now that he is standing in front of me, he looks even younger! How can one person be this beautiful, attractive and also talented? Not fair!" My lips pursed at the thought.
"Experience can be built Ms. Hana. However, I know that your department needs a new Editor right now. So just go ahead and hire another one. Mrs. Meldia here will be working for me," he said in a friendly, yet commanding manner, with just enough pressure behind his voice for others to know that he was serious.
"Of course sir." The four interviewers politely agreed. No more questions were asked.
"Alright. Now Mrs. Meldia, please come with me." He sweetly smiled and put out his right hand waiting for me.
"Give me, give me. That beautiful hand. If I could just have it, so many erotic things I could do with it." My inner voice began to ravage inside my mind once again.
My eyes stuck on his beautiful body and I stood up. Forgetting that on my lap were some of the extra papers that I had prepared for the interview. They dropped to the ground and flew everywhere. Everywhere!
"Ah shit," I muttered softly, it was a reflex that I was trying to stop. Cursing when dropping something wasn't something that I wanted my little angel Jason to hear. Squatting down with great difficulty due to my tight dress and high heels, I began to pick up my papers. Then I had to stand up and run to another corner where some papers had flown to. What an embarrassment!
Bradian Hunter ran toward me in his fashionable shoes. "Here." He helped me by picking up a folder and handing it to me. He was so close! Those beautiful blue eyes. "Argh, control yourself Jess."
"Thanks," I said while looking down so that he couldn't see that I was blushing. After spending the next minute picking up all my papers. He walked out of the door, holding it opened and said, "Let's go Mrs. Meldia."
Quickly walking through the door, he followed and walked beside me. After walking for five minutes, I couldn't hold back my curiosity as well as the need to try and break the silence between us. "So what kind of work are you looking for me to edit?"
"I don't know yet, but I am sure we can figure something out for you to do." Rubbing his index finger and thumb on his chin, he paused for a second and said. "How about this? You will, for the time being, review some of my work. Think of it as an investment so you would be familiar to my writing style as well as what topics I usually write in."
"I see. But what kind of genre do you write in? Thriller? Fantasy? Horror? Romance?" Oh boy, was I curious. Wanting to know more about this good-looking-like-a-god fellow was my mission for the day.
"Hahaha. Mrs. Meldia. You are really interesting." For some reason, he laughed at me. "Did I say something funny?" I wondered.
Chapter 5: Lucky Streak
After walking for a couple more minutes, he began, saying, "Do you know why I choose you, just one person, to be my exclusive editor?" Turning to his right to face me, he continued. "When I want something, I want it to be mine only."
Blushing like a red strawberry, my heart began pacing and smashing in my chest. "What does he mean by that?" I didn't want to overthink what he was saying. "He wants me? No...Can't be. He could have anybody with this look, charm, and more money than god. Why would he choose a person who is at least ten years older than him?" Shaking my head, I tried to erase the thought.
"Not only that. I consider myself to be a businessman instead of a writer Mrs. Meldia. So my work needs to be revised many, many times before being published." He sighed at his own weakness.
"I have a question Mr. Hunter. Why did you choose me?" Squeezing out some of bravery juice, I looked straight into his blue crystal eyes.
"Because I am interested in you Mrs. Meldia. Furthermore, I don't like random people to work for me. Every worker in this place was filtered out from the best of the best of course. However, I don't connect with them on a personal level, and I think that my Editor should be in such a level." He began to explain while I continued to check out his beautiful eyes. "Damn it Jess. Stop staring."
"B...but I am a random person too." I got more and more confused with this young man. I had no skill, no special talent nor any excessive experience. I wasn't even a good socialist. It wasn't that I was putting myself down, but I was just realistic about my abilities.
"You are not a random person Mrs. Meldia. We've met before." Bradian smiled again at me and said softly in his husky voice. I blinked and scratched my eyes for a second there; I swore that I saw his body were sparkling.
"What? Really? Where?" Staring at his body mindlessly, I muttered out some one-word questions.
"In that elevator, Mrs. Meldia." He giggled at me like it was such a good joke. I pursed out my lower lip. "So lame."
"Seriously. I want an answer Mr. Hunter. I don't like working for people who has an ulterior motive." I diverted my eyes to face his but in my mind, "Please have an ulterior motive with me. Please!"
"Please, call me Brad. And don't be so tense Mrs. Meldia. I mean no harm. At the moment, I don't have an answer for you. I just wanted to help. Maybe I am just that nice of a person. And you are welcome by the way." He raised an eyebrow and said sarcastically.
Giving him my doubted face, I asked: "So when will I start to work?" Still, I needed a job and the thought of being able to see this young man again made my hormones cracking up in my body.
"I am busy these couple days so I think next Monday will be a great time for you to come in." He stopped to think for a moment and handed me his card. "If you have any question, please contact me at this number."
Taking the card from his hand, my hand grazed his and immediately, I panicked. I pulled my hand right back instinctively. Like I was scared. "What the hell was that Jess?" My inner voice yelled at me.
Looking up at Bradian Hunter, I saw that he was smiling at me, as though he was entertained or something. I must have looked like a fool. Too embarrassed, I hugged my portfolios tightly against my chest and walked quickly away from him.
Just ten steps and another thing happened. "Ah!" I fell down on the granite ground as an anchor in the ocean. "Thud!" My right heel was broken!
Chapter 6: Unpredictable
Bradian Hunter ran up to me and said, "Are you ok Mrs. Meldia?" He looked really concerned.
"Yeah, I am ok." He tried to hold me up, but it was no use. I fell down again. I could feel it now, the throbbing pain in my right ankle.
"No, you are not ok. You have sprained yo
ur ankle." Leaning down and caressing my wound, he was very understanding and caring.
"W...wait. Hang on," I yelped as he lifted me up with one hand on my back and the other on my leg. I held my hands together around his neck trying not to fall down.
"Be still Mrs. Meldia. It's not good if you fall down once again." He turned and looked at me. We were so close. If I could just stretch my head a little bit, I would surely be tasting his lips. The pain in my ankle suddenly turned into adrenaline as I began to think about kissing him.
"M...my shoes," I softly said to him.
Bradian Hunter looked at a random person in the hallway and said: "You."
The young man that was walking hurriedly was really surprised. "Good morning sir. What can I help you with?"
"Get the heel behind me and send it to my office," Bradian ordered and quickly walked into the elevator. Stepping up to the blue screen next to the elevator. He said, "CEO override." From the blue screen, a robotic female voice said, "Voice identification successful. Bradian Hunter. CEO." I looked at the elevator red number. It was from floor 76 and it dropped down continuously. "We don't have to wait for people to get off or on the elevator. It will come straight to us." His husky voice were so...delicious.
Very quickly, the elevator opened and inside were four men and three women. Bradian, unexpectedly, said, "Get out and use another elevator." The businessmen and businesswomen looked at each other in surprise but still, they greeted Bradian and walked out of the elevator. Stepping into the elevator, he held me close to the numbers buttons. Whatever they called it.
"Do you mind? The top floor, please," Bradian asked.
I nodded and pressed the button while still holding on his muscular shoulders. Argh, it was so hot! I turned back and looked up at him while the elevator doors were closing. He was looking straight ahead but then Bradian noticed that I was staring and turned to look at me back. Oh my god, I was flushing.
"What?" He smiled angelically and softly whispered to me. I was melting on the inside.
"N...nothing." I diverted my eyes away from him and shyly answered. How could he make a housewife like me feel like a teenager all of the sudden?
"It's...just that you can let me down now." His hands on my body made my heart beat way too fast. My thighs clenched in the thought of him touching me.
"I can. But I won't." Very soon, the elevator opened and he carried me into his office. It was the biggest office that I had seen. It was more like an apartment rather than an office since it had everything. From bedroom, bathroom, and even a built-in pool. It must have cost a fortune to build this place. Ah, billionaires, it must have been nice.
He walked over to his grey sofa and gently put me down.
"Sit tight. I will go and get some ice and elastic bandage," he whispered to me and caressed my hair over my ears. Then very quickly, he disappeared into another room. I leaned against the sofa and enjoyed the beautiful view outside. My house had a view, but it was just our neighbor backyard. I had never been on such a height before. I didn't know why, but for some reason, time just...went on by. I had to take care of Jason, and I of course, never complained, it was the best job for a mother surely. However, I also wanted to go here and there. To see the world, to climb the highest building, to swim in the deepest lake, and to explore the safaris. Sigh. Too many unfulfilled desires.
I lost in my thought so deeply that I didn't hear the footsteps of Bradian behind me.
"What are you thinking about Mrs. Meldia?" He walked over to me, squatted down and lifted my sprained leg up. He did it so gentle that I didn't even feel the pain.
"Just... life. I know that sounds very cliché but yeah. I was thinking about life. About how much I have missed, you know. But what scares me is that maybe I will never be able to fulfill my checklist." Still gazing outside to the horizon, I began telling him what I had felt. I didn't know why however there was something about being at this place that it made me feel comfortable. But then the sharp coldness woke me up.
"This ice will help with the swelling as well as the pain. You are in good hand. Don't worry," Bradian Hunter comforted me. Why was he so nice with me? Maybe he was right, maybe he really was such a good guy? Although he seemed to be quite distant from his employees.
"Do you do this often?" Curiosity got the better of me, I had to ask.
Chapter 7: Home
"Do I do what often Mrs. Meldia?" Bradian looked up at me with his beautiful eyes. I wouldn't say no to just be hypnotized in its perfection forever and eternity.
"This. Hiring me, sweeping me up, and helping me. Are you this much of a good guy Mr. Hunter?" Wow, I didn't know that I could make eye contact and talked to him two whole sentences without stuttering. It was a step forward. "Very good, Jess", I congratulated myself.
"What if I say no? What if I say yes? Will it change your opinion about me?"
"Maybe."
Bradian took a moment to pause and said. "I see. Well, I am not a good guy Mrs. Meldia."
"Then why are helping me?"
"I don't know. There is just...something about you that I... I don't know. I just want to take care of you, that's all. Is that so bad?" Bradian said in a very sincere manner. He looked at me as though he was looking at something that he needed to protect. He wanted me.
"..." I didn't know what to say. It was all good fantasizing being with this beautiful, attractive man. But it was just..."You are too young."
He looked taken back by what I just said. Once again he looked down on my sprained ankle and didn't say anything. "Are you sure that is the only reason? What about your husband?" Sigh. Apparently he didn't expect my answer was going to be about his age, or better yet, my age.
I didn't want to tell him about the state of my marriage so I was just ... silent. After a while, he took of the ice on my ankle and wrapped a bandage around it. "Maybe it is time for me to bring you home Mrs. Meldia." He still didn't look at me, but his voice sounded so sad. I didn't know why, but the image of this man in front of me feeling sad was like cutting into my heart. The man that I had just met for not even an hour and I had already been falling for him. My right hand started to reach out to him but...then I clenched it. I stopped and pulled my hand back. "Maybe it is for the best." I thought.
Bradian Hunter held my arm as we began descending downstairs. Ten minutes later, we were at my car. The whole trip was entirely in silence.
"So where is your address?" He opened the door for me and with his hands, he carried me onto the front seat.
"5131 Kinston Ave."
****
"Yep, there, that blue house." I pointed to the distance and said. The ride was heavy. We didn't talk to each other at all. He stopped the car and went around to open the door for me. Then helped me get off and walked me to my door. Searching around in my bag, I took out my key and opened it.
"So...I should be going then." He bit his lower lip and said. "Are you sure you will be fine? You should call your husband to let him know."
"I will be fine. I'm sorry for all the troubles though. And thank you for helping me." I left his arms and held on to the door to support myself. "I really appreciate it."
"No problem... Well, I guess I should go now." He opened his mouth like he was going to say something else. But then he stopped. "Never mind."
"Goodbye, Jessica," he said, while walking a couple step backward while still facing me. Then he got on his car and left. I stood there watching him walked away, but my mind was chaotic. I wanted to reach out and shout, "Please don't go." Sigh. How could such a man have such an effect on me in such a short period of time!
Chapter 8: Linda
Walking slowly into my living room, I sat down on my couch and sighed. Man, what a day it was! I had never thought that the moment my husband walked out on me, I would be able to see someone else. Someone so mesmerizing. Maybe I should just try to forget about this encounter. But what about the future? The time that I would need to work under him. "Ah
, under him... Damn it Jess, control yourself."
Turning on my cellphone, I called the bossy Linda to let her know that I had already finished the interview. She had always been a good sport, but she was a very gossipy person, just like me.
"Hi Jess. How did the interview go?" the voice from the other line sounded so excited and so loud.
"Hi Lind. It went badly. I mean the interviewer said that I wasn't even qualified in their lowest standard." I sighed and said.
"What? They said that? ... I am sorry Jess. I didn't know that the company was this rude." She sounded disappointed. I didn't know if it was because she thought I didn't get the job or because the company didn't treat someone that her husband recommended better. Who knew?
"Yeah, it is no problem Lind. However, I got offered a job from Mr. Hunter so it is all good?" I spoke indifferently, trying to mask my excitement in a cold tone.
"Hunter? You mean Bradian Hunter? The 25 year old billionaire? With the appearance of a Greek god?" Linda sounded shocked. Well, I guessed I would too since the opportunity was a once-in-a-life-time event.
"Yeah. He's not that good looking anyway." What a lie! Didn't know why I said that.
"Oh, you kidding me? I had met him before in one of the company Annual Party. If he tells me to strip right then and there, I might agree!"
"Hahaha Linda, you are a slut."
"Anyway, all I am saying is that congratulation. Now you will have a steady income. Don't worry about that bastard husband Mark. Even if he is my husband's best friend, he is dead to me now that he hurt you Jess. Just let him rot in hell. What are you thinking about doing with him? Just divorce the damn fool." Linda was getting more and more angry. I remembered the moment she found out the information from me. She flew from New York to California overnight and got into a huge fight with Mark. She was extremely protective and I was grateful for her.
