Waves of Love
Description
This is the story of a love deeper than the sea, more powerful than any current - absolute fantasy turned real love. On a small town by the sea, The Great Roman is a ship taken from its rightful owners into the hands of a cruel captain. Rachel Morgan, a brave and rebellious woman that had spent her entire life at sea, is determined to protect and take back her father’s ship. However, the Great Roman slips straight into troubled waters, filled with magic, mystery and more specifically, mermaids. Before Rachel manages to make sense of everything around her, half of the crew falls to their death by the wicked spell of the mermaids; she survives, though. She survives and, against all odds, ends up forming an extraordinary bond with one of the mermaids, Abby. Their relationship will surely bring them trouble, but if their love for the sea and for each other is strong enough, they just might overcome the challenge.
Chapter 1
There they were, all lined up on the dock and ready to go. A crew of at least ten experienced men of the seas. They had muscles bulging out of their shirts, skin painted bronze by the years under the sun, and expressions turned into ever-present frowns by squinting so much to look out to the horizon. Though in some ways they were all different, it was more than their specific skills, it was genuinely personal. Particularly, the man that stood out the most was their Captain, Charles Tyler. He was tall, had broad shoulders and angry blue eyes, he kept long hair and a shaggy beard of pale-yellow color to make himself appear older, just as he barely cured his wounds so he could wear greater scars. He was one of the youngest Captains of that small seaside town, but he had earned the title forcefully and nobody would question him or the way he did things. All the men of the crew looked proud and eager to be lined up there to be approved by their Captain.
“Tanner, welcome aboard,” he said to a man that looked just like him but older. “Welcome, Tom… Tommy,” he nodded to the next two men in line, who weren’t related in any way but for their similar names. “Mr. Mills, nice to see you here,” he greeted the cook that would board the ship. “Children… one, two, three,” Charles counted the younger members of his company, not caring for names as long as they got their jobs done, “six, seven… Absolutely not!”
The Captain’s booming exclamation got everybody rattled - everybody except for the subject of his rage. Standing in front of him, prouder than anybody else on the line, was Rachel Morgan. She was smiling just as intently as the man in front of her was frowning. Rachel would have cut the head of anybody who dared say they looked alike, but they did share some qualities, even if they showed them in completely different ways. Both pairs of eyes qualified as blue, but his were cold and pale and hers were darker, rich and profound. Charles’ long blonde mess of hair was unpleasant to witness, while Rachel sported her vibrant and luscious golden hair much, much shorter, the style was sharp and neat and one side of her head was shaved short. Plus, her tan looked good, her clothes looked clean and her personal hygiene was a thousand times better.
“Absolutely yes!” she told him in a mocking tone, “this is my father’s ship, Charlie, whether you want to believe it or not. And I’m going to be part of the crew, whether you like it or not.” Rachel had been kind enough to whisper the last part of her speech, as if not to embarrass him - that would have ended up badly for both of them.
The ship they were talking about was the Great Roman, a well-known classic around those shores. Rachel’s father had earned ownership of the ship after being a part of the crew on a trip and saving the ship and the Captain’s life from a pirate attack. However, Mr. Morgan was now too old to lead the ship himself, and despite his numerous adventures, jobs and risks taken throughout his life, he didn’t have the money or the crew to maintain the ship and no matter how enraged it made the entire family, it was proved to be impossible to get a crew that would obey Rachel as their superior. So, to keep the ship afloat and working, Mr. Morgan allowed temporary Captains to rent the ship and take it out into the deep waters. What he didn’t know, though, was how much Captain Charles despised his daughter… though some of that was her fault for going out of her way just to annoy him.
“Look, little Charlie, I was quite literally born on that boat, out on the sea. That gives me at least thirty years of experience. Whereas you only arrived in town fifteen years ago.” Rachel spoke calmly, completely undisturbed by the menacing stare that Charles was trying to give her.
He had at least one clever brain cell, it seemed, though. Because even though he yielded to her request, he turned the situation on her.
“Stop bugging me! God! Have some respect for yourself woman!” He shouted this so the whole crew could hear him and chuckle with him, as he turned his back on them all and lead them into the boat. “Let’s go everybody… and careful with our little lady over there.”
If Charles Tyler wanted to discourage Rachel, he’d have to try harder, though. Because as he turned around with a smug smirk on his face hoping to catch sight of her embarrassment, instead he was met with an equally smug grin on her part. Whether he would admit it or not, he had really been unable to deny her rightful place among the crew of the Great Roman.
Chapter 2
The Great Roman was a ship that had tried a little bit of everything. It had explored unknown waters and coasts, it had faithfully served as fishing boat for a handful of years, it had served as mere transport, and it had embarked on all kinds of adventures. On this occasion, though, the Great Roman might be sailing towards its greatest risk. Captain Charles was a man of danger and dares. So, when he found out about a nearby island with a mysterious history, a treacherous path and dozens of myths surrounding its name, he jumped at the opportunity to be the man to take the credit for unveiling the secrets and taming whatever was hiding in those strange coasts. The fact that he had taken the Great Roman with him was mere chance, but the fact that Rachel had fought so hard to be a part of the crew was not trivial at all. She was well aware of Charles intentions and she couldn’t let her father’s ship end up tragically in the hands of such an unpleasant man, she had to be there to do anything in her power to protect the Great Roman.
The rest of the crew had joined for all kinds of reasons. Tanner was an old friend, almost mentor of Charles and just as eager to fight local legends. Tom and Tommy were loyal workers for Charles, they couldn’t have denied the job even if they were both superstitious and scared to their bones for the trip. The cook, Mr. Mills, as most of the younger staff, was there just because it was another job. The results of the entire voyage, though, would surprise every one of them. It would end up being the farthest thing from just another job.
Even though their destination ended up being about twelve hours away from the deck that watched them
leave, the trip took them three days to get there. Partly, because they all absolutely loved being out on the sea, it was a great opportunity to explore and they had enough supplies to last them a week. But, if they were to be honest, which the Captain would never be, it was because they simply couldn’t find the island. There wasn’t a map, not really. The island was mostly a legend but one taken very seriously. No one in town doubted its existence, but nobody had set foot on it, Charles was determined to make history by changing that fact. After three days of sailing in circles, back and forth, and passing through meaningless islands, it finally happened. The island showed itself, as if taking pity on them and coming out of its hiding place, showing up in plain sight where they had already looked before.
The place, even from a distance, looked as magical as anything they had ever seen.
“There’s plenty of fog, the waters are calm, it’s getting dark but I can spot a hill, a cliff, perhaps a waterfall…” the Captain was narrating his perspective to a young man that was taking notes, since Charles was so sure he’d be in history books after this trip. “We are approaching some rocks, this looks treacherous. There’s a curve on the outline of the island we can… music. I hear music. Who dares sing at this very moment?!”
Again, Charles’s loud and furious exclamation got everybody shaken. But it was more than that. It was more serious, because they all heard the music, and none of them were producing it. Since they had slowed down the ship to navigate through the massive rocks, they were all on the deck and staring out towards the island in the utmost silence.
“Charlie, what are you doing?” Rachel said, getting closer to the Captain.
“I’ve told you my name is Charles! What do you think I’m doing, girl? I’m going to that island and I’m making it mine.”
“There are too many rocks in here. You’re going to harm the skull or even crash the whole thing if you keep going…” Rachel told him, her voice straining with concern for her father’s ship. Captain Charles didn’t care for her opinion though.
“Too bad. Nothing can stop us now. We’re doing as I say.”
Rachel would have continued to argue then, but even the last of Charles words were drowned out by the melodies that were surrounding the ship growing louder and louder. Plus, now there came the murmurs of some of the men of the crew. They were starting to pray. From the young men to Tom and Tommy, to a handful of different Gods, in a handful of different languages but all driven by the same emotion - utter fear.
The only woman in that boat, Rachel was still staring ahead at the Captain and the bow of the ship when it started to happen. She heard the melodies getting impossibly louder, she could determine the sounds didn’t come from musical instruments but those were voices, singing in an unknown language. Next, she heard the rapid footsteps of few men running away from the front of the boat. Simultaneously, she became conscious of another group of men starting to walk ahead, towards the bow, slowly as if in a daze. Charles Tyler himself, who previously looked just about ready to shout at his superstitious crew, he was suddenly filled with an odd serenity, he closed his open mouth, relaxed his features and turned his back to Rachel.
She looked around, at the group of men acting strangely. She looked at a few of them working desperately to get the lifeboats ready. Then, she heard someone curse. Tanner, the even tougher version of Charles ran up to his apprentice and slammed a pair of something that looked like headphones on the Captain’s head and then started pushing him away, away from the bow and towards the lifeboats. Charles still looked somewhat dazed but soon enough he pressed his hands against his ears and started to run by himself, not noticing that his dear friend was now victim of the same spell he had freed him of. Tanner turned around and with his eyes in a haze he joined the men that stood frozen at the bow.
Still confused, Rachel didn’t understand or didn’t want to understand what was happening. It wasn’t until she saw the first man throw himself to the water, with a smile on his face that she understood. They had all been hearing the songs of sirens, mermaids, fantastical creatures that were half-women and half wild beings of the deep waters. These songs, according to the legends were able to hypnotize even the strongest men on earth and make him jump into the water, drunk in the desire to hold these spectacular women of the magical voices, but instead they’d meet their absolute tragic end of their lives.
As the men continued to fall under the terrible spells and jump from the boat, Rachel’s brain finally got in action. She didn’t completely understand everything, not yet. But she understood that she had to run, she had to save her own life because nobody else in that ship was going to help her in the slightest. Just as she had started to run towards the lifeboat, she watched it fall from the side of the ship and into the water. It would have been impossible for her to reach the other lifeboat in time and get it into the water without help. So, Rachel did the only thing she could think of doing - she jumped into the freezing water.
The men continued to fall into their tragic fates at the bow of the ship, but Rachel instead was moving away from there. She was trying to swim as fast as she could, straining her body to her limits to save her life. But the men on the boat included Charles, they were all desperate to get away from there and he had forbidden them to stop or go back for her. They were moving so much faster than her and soon enough it became obvious she wouldn’t reach them.
“Help!” she started to scream. “Please help me!” she desperately yelled, feeling her limbs grow tired with the pressure she was putting on them. “How dare you! Don’t let me die!” she continued to scream, feeling as much rage as she was feeling fear. But something otherworldly was about to change everything.
“Would you like some help?”
Rachel screamed with all her will. Her fright had been so awful she almost drowned. She started to flail her limbs fiercely again to stay afloat, and as she coughed up the water she had accidentally swallowed with that scare and her vision cleared, she caught sight of the source of the strange voice that had addressed her.
Calmly floating right beside her was another woman. A woman that hadn't been in the ship. A woman that had she really been a normal woman it would have been impossible for her to be there by herself. A woman that had she been human she wouldn’t have been floating so peacefully in that awful cold and in those frightening situations. And she was also the most gorgeous woman that Rachel could have ever possibly imagined. This extraordinary vision had long and lush hair as blue as the sea, but her eyes were dark and ambiguous as the night. She wasn’t smiling, not precisely, but she stared at Rachel almost amusedly.
When Rachel couldn’t handle her astonishment and she seemed to be about to start sinking again, the wonderful creature dived into the water and held Rachel’s hand. The sensation was terrifying and pleasant and if she had had the time, Rachel would have probably yanked her hands away, even if just as a reflex. However, what ended up happening was that Rachel was swiftly pulled by her hand. She was being moved quickly and smoothly, as if she had just caught a rope that was leading her to the lifeboat, but she could feel that wasn’t the case. A pair of hands was dragging her at speed no human was capable of swimming. Although she swallowed more handfuls of seawater and she was more scared than she had ever been, in a matter of seconds Rachel had reached the lifeboat.
Rachel’s hand reached out to the edge of the boat and she held tightly, trying to regain her breathing. All the men crowded in the small boat were staring at her more than stunned. Several manly hands reached out to bring her aboard, give her a towel and make sure she was alive and well. But Rachel couldn’t shake her mind away from the unexplainable experience of a second ago. When she managed to sit up, all she could do was stare at her hands, she could feel them tingling and she could feel them warm despite that freezing water from which she had just got out. She looked back at the scene they were leaving behind, and her heart ached terribly for her father’s ship being abandoned, for the lost lives of the men that jumped right
into their deaths, and finally for the kind being that saved her life and she didn’t get a chance of saying thanks.
Chapter 3
The following day was nothing short of a mess. It seemed the entire seaside town was present at the city hall to listen to the recount of events of the previous day. Charles Tyler shared his story again and again. Sometimes he allowed the few men that survived to share their experiences, as long as they supported Charles version and made him look like the hero he was posing as.
“There we were, in the cold, in the fog, determined to reach this unknown piece of land and claim it for our people… when tragedy caught us in its deadly hands,” he said. “I did a quick job of getting my entire crew safe and I prepared the lifeboats by myself. But that dark magic was just too powerful for me… I couldn’t protect them all…” At which point Charles would make a dramatic pause, made a ridiculous pose and exchange looks with one of the other survivors so they could come back up his story.
“Yeah, there was a lifeboat and uh, Captain was there. Some people jumped. It was crazy,” one of them said, and then received a stern look from Charles. “Oh, Captain risk his life for us. He’s a hero!”
The young man talked without conviction, but still it all rose applause around the hall and Charles got on with his story for the thousand times.
“Once we were on the lifeboat, we turned around, obviously, to save as many men as possible. As a true gentleman I delicately picked up Miss Morgan, the daughter of out reputable and admired Mr. Morgan owner of the ship we tragically lost yesterday. But that was all the space we had, and dark magic was really so strong that those men were just lost and…”
A series of stunned gasps rose around the hall and forced Charles to stop his speech and look up and around him. Rachel was standing on her chair and looking as furious as ever. She knew the real story of the events of the previous day. She knew the deceitful mess that was Charles Tyler. She could have let it all pass and allow herself to be sad alongside her father for their lost ship. But seeing Charles talk about it all as if he were a hero, as if he had actually cared about the people in the ship and the ship itself, in addition to the heartbroken face of her father who was sitting there on the verge of tears for losing its beloved boat, Rachel simply couldn’t stand it anymore, so instead she stood up on the chair and said what had to be said.
