“Arthur,” I told him quietly, “I saw him. I saw my grandfather. Is there anything, anything we can do for him?”
Devilyn shook his head, which caused a new wave of tears to come over me.
“It is so unfair. Why? There has to be something you can do. He needs to be released. To be free.” His punishment was unbearable for me to even comprehend. “Death would be better than that prison!” Devilyn was unusually quiet as he looked down.
“I’m sorry that my world has caused you pain.”
“It’s my world now as well, Devilyn.” Devilyn stared at me intensely.
Before I could say another word, he reached out and kissed me lightly across my lips. I ran my hands through his hair, wanting so desperately to deepen the moment, praying silently that it would last forever.
“I love you, Caroline,” he told me. “Now and forever.”
“I love you, too,” I whispered against his mouth as we kissed again and both lay back against his bed. When he finally pulled away from me, I put my hand on his heart. Glad to know that his was beating as rapidly as mine.
We were both silent. So much to say, but it seemed that there were so few words left. The windows to his balcony were open, and I could hear the sound of the wind as it blew in and around the trees. Almost like a lullaby.
I slowly drifted off to sleep, wanting this moment to never end. Praying that my dreams were as sweet as my reality.
Chapter Seventeen
“Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”
—Edgar Allan Poe
D
I watched her sleep.
I watched the deep breaths she took in. I reveled in the innocence that she exuded. The purity.
How ugly my world was.
Ugly even with all the outward beauty we possessed.
We had taken one life and corrupted generations. And here was the girl who had to suffer for it all. How could I subject her to such a life? How could I ask her to be with me and endure my battles, to live in a world where there was either black or white and nothing in between? No matter how much I loved her, no matter how much my heart would long for hers, I could not do that to her. I could not ask her to give everything up for me.
The many conflicts that I was doomed with were unbearable. My whole life seemed as if it had always been at odds. But this was something I would not battle. I wanted her desperately. I wanted her to be my Queen in life and not just in name. But I couldn’t do it.
If I couldn’t exercise self-control, she would be lost to her loved ones. More importantly, she would be lost to me. Forever. I wanted to wake her from her deep sleep and embrace her one last time. But I knew that I couldn’t. She was finally resting. Finally at peace from all of the unrest I had caused her.
I searched her face wondering what our life would have been like without all of these complications. Would our paths have crossed? If they did, what would we feel when we first set eyes on each other? Would it have been this powerful and all-consuming? Would we have grown old together, loving each other with our children surrounding us?
I guess it didn’t matter now.
Nothing did.
That was the dream from the past.
“I will always love you,” I whispered.
I traced her face with my fingers and leaned down slowly to place a kiss on her lips.
The last kiss.
Because with it she’d forget me forever.
Chapter Eighteen
“No matter how much light lives within me, it cannot encompass the darkness that consumes my soul.”
Devilyn Reilly
