The Dying Game

by Asa Avdic

“No, I’ve never played that game. Have you?”

The secretary looked up at me. His gray eyes sparkled.

  “It was my favorite game.”

ANNA DOESN’T EXIST. Isola doesn’t exist. The Union of Friendship doesn’t exist. Stockholm does exist, of course, as does the outer archipelago, but I have taken some pretty significant and obvious freedoms with both of them. All similarities to real people, state structures, and institutions are coincidental and nothing to spend too much time pondering. In short, everything is made up. For me, this was the whole point of writing a novel.

There are, however, many people who have contributed to this made-up story. From the bottom of my heart: Thank you!

Stephen Farran-Lee, Hanna Skogar Sundström, Molly Uhlman Lindberg, Bonnie Halling, Richard Herold at Natur och Kultur.

Astri von Arbin Ahlander, Christine Edhäll, Kaisa Palo at Ahlander Agency.

Kulturkoftorna Book Club and Lilla Book Club.

Anna Berg, first reader, best friend. Mats Strandberg, it feels like you were the one who packed my lunch and handed me the compass as I set out into the wild forest of writing books. I am ever dumbfounded and happy in the face of your generosity on all levels. Anna Andersson, who, besides her friendship and wisdom, taught me the essential art of pouring out macaroni. Mathias Andersson, with his warm heart and cool head. Jenny Jägerfeld, the only person who responds with immediate enthusiasm when you ask her to a “freak-out lunch.” Sonja Holmquist, everyone ought to have a doctor who can diagnose your made-up illnesses and treatments. All the other wonderful friends who have been there on good days and bad, you know who you are.

And, above all and as always: F, A, and M—without you, nothing.
