“Cade…If you don’t start moving right now I’m going to do something violent.” She arched up again, squeezing some internal muscles around him, and that was that. He pulled out of her almost to the end of his cock, the fat head rubbing against her, and then slammed back in.
“Ah…Baby, tell me if I hurt you, I can slow down, but baby, I don’t think I can actually stop at this point…Christ, you feel so good around me…”
“Don’t want you to stop. It’ll kill me if you stop.” Her nails were scraping against his back at this point, possibly drawing blood, but he didn’t care in the slightest. The extra burn just made him work more, pushing a little harder on the down stroke. He felt his spine tingling and his balls draw up more and then she did something that he had never had during actual intercourse before, even with aggressive she-wolves. One of her soft hands reached between their bodies and cupped his balls, and then she squeezed, just enough.
“Fuck! Jesus, Marybeth, do that again!” And she did, gently squeezing with the rhythm of his thrusts, until he was out of his mind with it, pumping into her furiously. He felt himself going over the edge, but was determined not to make the journey alone. “Come with me, darlin’.” He tweaked the nipple that was between his fingers hard, then skimmed down her side, loving her soft, feminine belly, and amazing hips, promising himself that he would spend more time exploring her curves next time. He worked between their moving bodies, shoving her hand aside so that he could rub her clit, then pinch it, just enough to hopefully send her over.
“Cade!” She shouted his name, and then yelled out wordlessly while the muscles inside her spasmed around his cock, triggering his own release. He twitched inside her, shouting out with her on each ejaculation. It went on longer than any orgasm he had ever experienced. Cade collapsed, rolling to her side, and scooped her up in his arms to settle her on his chest. They lay there panting, her soft body weighing him down deliciously while her hands petted his chest and belly, occasionally moving down to stroke his softening cock and balls. Not that they would stay soft if she kept it up, but Christ, he could lay like this with her forever. He cupped one of her breasts, absently caressing it and tweaking the still-hard little nipple.
Cade was just closing his eyes in contentment when he heard the other wolves, wolves from his pack, coming along the river. They were still far enough away that they would have time to get some clothes on, but lord he didn’t want to move. He had never been so blissed out in his life. He sighed regretfully and pulled her chin up to look at him. He was pleased to see little gold flecks that hadn’t been in her green eyes before, the sign of her wolf. She blinked up at him, giving him a lazy smile. He didn’t want to spoil it, but he doubted she was an exhibitionist, and he knew he wasn’t. “Time to get some clothes on, little wolf. We are about to have company.”
Chapter Five
Marybeth had been luxuriating in the best post-coital glow of her entire life. The orgasm she had experienced at the end had been more than worth the tiny bit of pain she had experienced when Cade had first shoved that enormous cock of his into her. That didn’t last long as her body had stretched to accommodate his size and lubricated itself more than enough to ease his passage. She knew she had never been that wet before, and how amazing was that? If this continued she would never have to use lube again. If that was an effect of being a werewolf, of all goddamn things, then she supposed she was okay with the whole shifting thing. Apparently, there were benes.
Usually, Marybeth wasn’t into a second round very soon after the first, even if she orgasmed, which wasn’t guaranteed at all in her experience, and usually the ‘after’ was awkward. Sometimes it was the awkward goodbyes after a job well done, or a job hardly done at all. Once it had been a tearful, godawful scene with a boy in college who had just wanted to fuck a fat chick. Marybeth didn’t consider herself fat, because she wasn’t. She was ample, she was curvy and she was healthy! One didn’t need to be stick figure thin to be considered a woman worth spending a little time on, at least not in Marybeth’s mind. Right now, with Cade, she didn’t think it was going to be awkward, and if she had her way, it wasn’t going to be over. There was definitely going to be a round two.
Petting a hairy chest and running her hands up and down him was pretty good right now. Pretty good, and turning her on again, which was kind of amazing. She was just hoping she could pique his interest when he spoke again. “Time to get some clothes on, little wolf. We are about to have company.”
Marybeth scrambled up and off him, grabbing the clothes they had shed earlier and making it into them in record time. Cade chuckled at her while he pulled his jeans on sans underwear. Damn. Commando was hot.
She was pulling her T-shirt down over her belly when she heard them. And smelled them. Which was freaking weird, when she thought about it. It wasn’t just the other wolves she smelled, either. She was aware of all kinds of things—the water from the river, the rabbit they had hunted, the smells from the town of Lawrence wafting on the breeze—it was all there for her to sort out in her head. Marybeth was kind of amazed that it didn’t overwhelm her, all those scents, but it was surprisingly easy to sort through and understand. Mmmm…rabbit. She really wanted to eat that rabbit now, but it would have to wait. Other wolves were coming. Her newfound olfactory superpowers told her that she had never met them before, that their scent was a little like Cade’s. Did that mean they were from the same pack?
Cade was right next to her when the first one loped up to them, tongue lolling out and tail wagging. The wolf shifted into a tall, lean man with curly brown hair, mocha-colored skin and kind eyes. He grinned at Cade. “What you got there, my man?” He took a deep breath, leaning his head into Marybeth. Oddly enough she wasn’t weirded out by it, and she found the fact that she wasn’t weirded out kind of weird. The man’s eyes widened a little and surprise colored his voice. “New wolf? She’s a pretty thing. What’s your name, darlin’?”
At the ‘darlin’, Cade growled low in his throat in warning. “Back off, Riley.” His tone wasn’t serious, was even a little teasing, but somehow Marybeth knew that he was staking a claim. Huh.
“Are you going to pee on me next? Jesus, Cade, he just asked my name.” She huffed a little, but didn’t protest when Cade wrapped his arms around her from behind and nuzzled her neck. Oddly, she found that comforting, not territorial, and she thought he had meant it that way. Even odder, she wasn’t inclined to check out the good-looking man who was still grinning at both of them without a stitch of clothing on. Huh, again.
She answered the wolf, who was apparently Riley. “I’m Marybeth.”
“Marybeth, pleased to meet you.” Riley flopped down on the grass near the river and put his hands under his head. “So, you ain’t part of our pack. You moving in here, or just traveling through?”
Cade growled again. “Someone bit her, Riley, a couple of days ago, without her permission or knowledge of what was going to happen. If I hadn’t have gone past her apartment and smelled her change coming…God, anything could have happened.” Marybeth felt Cade’s arms reflexively tighten around her.
Riley looked up from the ground, coming into a sitting position. “What? Christ!” He ran a hand over his short hair. “We scented you both a while ago, and the rest of the pack is coming this way to check her out. Jesus, Cade, this is pretty fucking serious.”
Cade nodded grimly as six more wolves came running up, each shifting into full grown people, all naked. It was the last wolf that came into the clearing that made Marybeth stiffen in fear and all but shrink back into Cade’s arms. That wolf she had seen before, two nights ago.
“Marybeth?” Cade could scent her fear, even if she hadn’t looked terrified and was trembling in his arms. “It’s okay, I know all these wolves. They’re members of my pack and they won’t hurt you, baby, any more than I would.”
Marybeth started shaking her head, and tried to pull out of his arms. Like that was going to happen. “It’s him, Cade, the wolf that bit me, the one
from two nights ago.”
“Which one?” Cade spoke quietly in her ear, not wanting to tip off whoever it was before he, Riley and his alpha, Travis, could deal with it.
“The big one, the one that just got here.” She gestured toward Travis, a big man in his forties, well over six feet, who had just shifted from a brown, shaggy wolf to man. His hard muscles were covered in scars from his past battles, with a few tattoos thrown in here and there.
“That’s not possible. That’s my alpha…he would never…” Even as he said it he knew that it was very possible. Many in the pack had been worried about Travis lately, and the aggressive way he had been acting both in the pack and out of it. Looks like he had finally gone over the line.
Marybeth jerked away from Cade enough that she could look into his face. Hers was painted in disgust and an appropriate amount of betrayal. “You think I’d lie about this? Fuck this noise, I want to go home. You can keep your crappy, bitey, jogger attacking pack, asshole.” She started pulling away and fighting him in earnest. Yep, I just fucked up. He held onto her, inwardly cringing as she cursed and clawed at his hands.
“No, baby, I don’t think that you’d lie. It’s just…he’s my alpha.” He took a deep breath and looked over at Travis, who was now standing and looking at them both with a small, sly smile on his face.
“Travis. You got something you want to say?” He put Marybeth behind him, one hand still firmly attached to her arm. At least she had stopped fighting him. Riley, seeing something was up, had walked over to stand next to him, arms crossed over his chest.
“Nope, but I would think you had something to say to me. How about thank you? Looks like you got to her first, boy, and I can’t say that I blame you one bit.” He tilted his head over to one side, meeting Marybeth in the eye. “She is one luscious piece of ass.” He absently stroked his chin, rasping over a shadow of a beard.
Cade growled, a sound filled with menace and righteous anger. “You? You did this to her? Fuck, Travis, she could have been killed. Your actions could have exposed the pack. You attacked her, without her consent you changed her and then you left her to suffer alone. What is wrong with you? What happened to you?”
“What happened to me?” The sly smile was gone, replaced by aggression, an animal that had been held in a cage too long. “Have you looked around lately? How many of us are there left and how many of them? Every year, we are less and less. Less than what we should be, less than what we could be because we have to stay hidden, like rabbits, like prey.” He hit his chest with one fist, right over a small tattoo of a running wolf. “I’m not fucking prey! I am the alpha. I am the thing that prey runs from, and I’m tired of pretending differently. Suffered alone? Hell, the fact that she made it just proves that I was right to change her.” He growled low. “She’s strong.” The rest of the pack was backing away cautiously, not willing to risk the attention of their alpha in the mood he was in. “How many women do we have in the pack? Four, each already mated. I will do what I have to do so that the pack can survive! We don’t have enough births, we don’t have enough recruits. Christ, Cade, our pack will be gone, extinct in a generation. There won’t be enough of us left to defend our territory from other packs.” He was right in front of Cade now, his head lowered and his voice nothing more than a growl. “I’ve been watchin’ her for a while now. She’s a perfect wolf, she just didn’t know it. Don’t take no crap. Hell, even when I had my teeth on her she fought me.” He wiped his face with one big hand in remembrance. “She even pepper-sprayed me. In my wolf form.” He grinned around Cade’s shoulder at Marybeth, who now smelled more outraged than fearful. They were all on thin ice here. If Travis tried to take her, Cade would challenge him, and there was no guarantee that he would win, none at all.
“Take your eyes somewhere else, asshole.” Cade glanced back at Marybeth as she growled out the words. Her wolf was close to the surface, her eyes flashing gold. Which just made Travis laugh.
“I’ve been watchin’ you, pretty thing. You’re going to give me pups, give the pack pups, and go ahead and fight if you like. It won’t matter, but it reinforces my choice. You’re strong.”
“Like I’m some breeding bitch for you? What the fuck!” She spat out the words. “I belong to one person, and that’s me.” She glanced angrily up at Cade. “And maybe him if he can get his shit together.” Annnnddd…that was incentive. Okay.
“Back the fuck up, Travis.” One hand kept a firm grip on Marybeth, not letting her start something with Travis she couldn’t win. Her wolf was young and wanting to fight, particularly right after her first shift. “Don’t do this. Don’t make me do this.”
Travis laughed again, the sound a harsh bellow showing teeth that were sliding into fangs. “Do this? What you think is gonna happen? You gonna fight me? Challenge me? Go ahead.” He backed up into the small clearing by the river, ringed by his pack. “Go ahead! You either get out of my way and give her to me, or give it your best shot, you little punk-ass. You don’t think I’ve noticed all them looks you been givin’ me? You don’t think I don’t know you been arguing every decision I’ve made lately?” He huffed out a breath and gave Cade a disbelieving look. “Where do you think that was all leading? Right here.” He gestured around the circle. “Right now, in front of these wolves we’ll see if you have what it takes.”
Cade looked at Marybeth. Her eyes were wide, but not with the fear that he thought she should have, but with continued anger and indignation. It shone out of her wolf eyes and in the stance of her body, her limbs vibrating with it. Their eyes met, a question asked and answered. She nodded her head. God, he hoped that nod meant what he wanted it to mean, the answer to his unspoken question. Not that he wasn’t going to kick Travis’ ass anyway, just for the way he had treated her. He would kick his ass for treating any innocent like that as well as for exposing them and the pack to that kind of danger, but with Marybeth he wasn’t asking permission. He was asking if this was for them. For more than the pack. For him. She nodded. Good enough.
Cade turned to look at Riley next to him, who wore the shocked expression that was on most of the rest of the pack. Not all, though. Some had seen this coming, apparently. “Take care of her.” Riley nodded to the softly spoken words, his countenance hardening as he moved closer to Marybeth. Cade turned around to face Travis, satisfied that his friend had his back. He walked into the circle, pulling his clothes off as he went.
Marybeth didn’t know what the hell was going on or when her life had hit The Twilight Zone, but she wanted off this ride now, thank you very much. Cade let go of her arm and then she watched as he grimly walked out into the clearing after whispering something to Riley, who moved closer to her. “What the fuck is going on?” She was trying like hell not to sound hysterical, but she was probably failing badly.
“Cade is going to challenge Travis, our alpha. ’Bout fucking time, too.”
“What? Like a fight? Over me.”
“Yep.” Riley looked her over from top to bottom in a quick glance before turning his attention back to the two now naked men who were staring each other down in a little testosterone fest she wanted nothing to do with. “Totally worth it.”
Marybeth wasn’t sure she agreed with that assessment of her worth. Sure, she kicked ass, was completely awesome in all ways, but worth getting into an actual fight over? Serious violence over? Come on. “Are you kidding me? They can’t fight over me, this is stupid.” She made to move out with an idea that she could get between them and stop this nonsense. Riley’s arm shot out and held her back with ridiculous ease.
“You would just distract him, and if you were planning on trying to stop this, that ain’t going to happen. It’s been a while coming, so don’t feel guilty or bad about anything that happens in the next few minutes and if it comes down to it, I will protect you same as he would.” He put a hand up as if to forestall any arguments she might have. “Just trust him. Cade’s got this.”
Trust him? She didn’t know him, did she? She ha
d only met him hours before but it already seemed they knew each other inside and out. Hell, they had unprotected sex just a few minutes ago, and she had never done that before. Sure she trusted him, but it looked like those two were really going to fight, not in a throw a few punches between friends at a bar kind of way, but actual someone-isn’t-getting-up-again fighting. At this point she stopped paying attention to all the crap going on in her head, because the brawl had started.
It wasn’t like the movies or TV where the characters traded insults and circled around each other for a few minutes. The two of them partially shifted in mid-leap, crashing together as some sort of part-wolf, part-man hybrid. Now they looked like what they were, monsters that inspired fear in humans who were smart enough to listen to the survival instinct going off in their gut. There wasn’t any trading of punches, or warmup moves. It was all brutal and bloody and went so fast Marybeth had a hard time following it, even with what she knew was enhanced vision that she hadn’t possessed yesterday. One minute they were snarling and biting, slashing with claws, and the next Cade had his jaws around Travis’ neck and they were both on the ground with Cade on top. It was over so fast.
