“Yes, what’s the situation over your place?”

“We are the same, we are not in our own house yet but I’m with my family. We will be going back to my home later,” he exclaimed. “I’ve talked to Chris today. Turns out, the government has another revelation to make,” he added in response.

“What does that mean?” Confusion was evident in his voice.

“I’m not sure but keep your radio on, try listening to other channels,” Stan answered back, leaving it for him to discover.

“Copy that, Stan. Whatever that would be, I hope it will end our nightmares,” he exclaimed with a hopeful voice.

Stan stared at it for a moment but before he could respond, his kids came flying into his lap, wrapping their arms around his neck.

“I’ve got to go, Jarvis. Keep me updated with your status. Take care, out.”

After a moment, he switched the frequency to the channel he has been listening to for daily updates.

Amused, his daughters stared at him but he just smiled, keeping his devices away from their sight. He repaid them with kisses, tickling them as they giggle.

“We’re all set and ready to go,” Adel stated from the door frame.

She stood tall, brushing her hair with her fingers, clasping it together in a bun. She smiled at them, looking elegant and beautiful as always.

“So, this is a goodbye for now, then,” Larry exclaimed in a low voice.

“Come with us, brother,” Adel replied, edging towards their seat.

“I’ll definitely come and visit when the situation stabilizes,” he said, smiling weakly at her.

Everyone was startled by the sound coming out of the small radio. They glanced at each other, guessing what the news would be.

“All stations, all stations, all stations. This is Kilo Bravo, this is Kilo Bravo, this is Kilo Bravo. For urgent emergency news, listen on channel one-zero. Out.”

Stan stood up, holding the small device in his hand. The kids became silent as if they knew what was happening. Exchanging looks to each other, he switched the channel to ten, following as instructed.

With the air of serenity, the tension was starting to build up in the room. There was still no transmission of public calls. Larry strode back to the window, seeing the men on the same spot of the road.

“General call. All stations, all stations, all stations. This is Kilo Bravo, this is Kilo Bravo. The President will have his speech in a little while. You have the right to listen to what he had to say. Out.”

They were uneasy, but they were trying to remain calm. The kids looked at them with a quizzical look, frowning at their reactions. It felt like something was going to blow but they could not describe it.

Stan gripped tightly at the small radio before he placed it down on the coffee table. They sat back on the couch in a deafening silence, waiting for the divulgence. He crossed his arms, leaning his head against the cushion. His kids sat back in his lap, leaning their heads over his chest.

“I, the President of the United States, am authorizing the suspension of habeas corpus and the activation of the militia throughout the entire country. Under Article I, Section 9 and Article I, Section 8 of the constitution, I, therefore, declare Martial Law in all the states and coasts of America.”

“What the heck was that?” Adel growled, staring at them, baffled. “They are giving the army the privilege to abuse their power.”

“Usually, martial laws do not yield to its main purpose. It often goes beyond that, abuse of power and authority,” Larry responded, shaking his head.

The conversation died down while Stan switched the radio off his hand. That was it. It happened. No one spoke for a minute or two, setting the mood in a meditation.

After the big declaration, Stan, and his family decided to head back to their home. Hoping that the militia would act justly, this time, they walked through the back door, avoiding the public eye.

As they walked, three men saw them along the way. Out of the corner of his eye, Stan saw them approaching their spot. Shushing his kids, they ran in an empty, open cellar and locked it. Stan peered through the window grills, seeing their feet on the ground.

Her wife was covering the mouths of their children, letting them close their eyes so they could not see what was happening. When he secured that it was safe to move, he walked back outside, checking the area. The men have already left; he led his family back out and continued walking back on track.

In every corner, he would look around the area while his family hides; making sure that it was safe before he let them cross with him.

The air became warmer as if the sun was rejoicing. That sunny day touched his skin before he stepped into a familiar house. It shielded him away from the light, breezing out its welcome tone. He smiled nonchalantly after locking the door behind, hugging his wife and daughters. In his heart, his family was his home. And this time, he was rebuilding back his life with them. It really felt home.
