  1

Tonight was supposed to be the best night of my life, but it turned into a horrible nightmare. It was the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to me in the history of ever. I was never going to live it down. Nobody would ever look at me the same way again.

It wasn’t like I was going to lose friends over it—I didn’t have many to begin with, and the ones I did have weren’t high up on the social totem pole. They weren’t going to go anywhere—nobody would take them. Us misfits had to stay together. But even among misfits, I was going to be the laughingstock.

I was just a skinny little nerd who’s little social cred’ just dipped into negative territory. The thought of having to face my classmates every day over the next four years was making my stomach turn, and my head spin. My whole body vibrated with anxiety, and the sour acidic taste of bile crept up in the back of my throat. I wanted to puke from embarrassment. But that would only make my situation worse.

It all started earlier that day in the West Mall by the student center. It was my birthday. I was just hanging out, minding my own business with my face buried deep into a quantum physics book. It was a beautiful day. Clear blue skies and 72 degrees. A small reprieve from the sweltering summer, and the impending blizzard of fall. Texas summers were legendary for their heat and humidity. You could scramble an egg on the hood of your car. If I had to choose between Hell and Texas in August, I’d choose Hell.

Maybe that’s what this was all about. Maybe this was some sort of punishment. But I hadn’t done anything wrong. Hell, I wasn’t cool enough to do anything wrong. All I did was study, tutor people in math and science, and drink the occasional beer. Like I said, I didn’t have much of a social life. My free time consisted of playing video games with my friends and avoiding getting my ass kicked.

I wasn’t big or strong enough to play sports. I wouldn’t have lasted two seconds on the football field. One hit and my fragile bones would snap like toothpicks. I was barely 140 pounds, soaking wet. At 5’8”, I didn’t really measure up to the 6’4” muscle heads—but I had always longed to play. Football players always had the best parties, the most friends, and the hottest girls. Somehow, math club just wasn’t that alluring to members of the opposite sex.

Athletes had all the fame and glory in high school, and here in college, it wasn’t much different. Though the dynamic had changed slightly. Even good high school players couldn’t make a college-level team. You had to be the best-of-the-best to play Division I ball. A lot of the high school athletes had pledged fraternities, which was like being on a team in and of itself. A brotherhood, as the name implied. And the game was to win at life.

I was never going to be a part of the Greek system. I wasn’t the All-American Hero. I didn’t have the good looks, perfect smile, and sculpted cheekbones. I didn’t have rippling biceps and washboard abs. I didn’t have broad shoulders that made women swoon. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’m an ugly guy. I don’t have a complex about it, I don’t think. But I’m not a men’s underwear model. You’re not going to find my body on the cover of romance novels.

Whatever. I’m fine with that. Surely, there is the perfect woman out there that will love me for my mind. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself.

“Dude!” Curtis said, nudging me with his elbow. His gaze was intensely fixed across the courtyard. His jaw hung low, and his eyeballs bulged out of their sockets. He brushed his curly dark hair out of his eyes and tried to form a smile. He had olive skin and a few pimples on his face that were leftover remnants of puberty.

“What?” I asked, not really wanting to be bothered. I kept my face buried in my textbook.

The sharp jab of Curtis’s elbow into my rib cage got my attention.

  “What?”

Curtis motioned to the objects of his gaze. My eyes followed to discover three gorgeous hotties.

“She’s been staring at you for five minutes,” Curtis said. “That’s Emma Michaels, isn’t it?”

My heart hammered in my chest like a stampede of elephants. I swallowed hard, and my skin grew slick with nervous sweat. Emma Michaels was my high school obsession. I sat behind her in trigonometry, and every day the luscious scent of her strawberry shampoo filled my nostrils. She was absolutely gorgeous. Auburn hair, creamy skin, and green eyes like emeralds. Now and then, she would ask me a math question, and I would do my best to help. I’m sure I came across like an over eager geek, fawning all over her. But it never went farther than that. And I never got up the courage to ask her out. I just couldn’t handle that kind of rejection.

Emma was standing with two friends in the shade. She wore a tight, teal blue spaghetti strap tank top that hugged her perky breasts. I could see the straps of her pink lacy bra underneath. I didn’t know much about bra sizes, but I figured she was a C cup. They had a perfect shape. And her nipples always tried their best to announce their presence, despite being restrained by needless layers of clothing.

My eyes took in her svelte form. They fell down her slim waist, glancing over her miniskirt, down her toned thighs. Her skin was smooth and flawless. My mind began to drift to thoughts of pure fantasy. If the wind blew just right, it might lift her skirt, and offer a wondrous glimpse of the promised land.

My junk stretched, and I realized this was not the place to let my mind wander. “You’re crazy. She’s not looking at me.”

  “Yes, she is,” Curtis insisted.

I glanced around, from side to side and behind me, looking for other possibilities. She had to be staring at someone else. Her two friends were equally gorgeous. Women like that just didn’t look at me twice unless they wanted something.

  Maybe they wanted tutoring?

My mind raced with possibilities, trying to figure out the mystery. The blonde standing next to Emma wore a bikini top with spaghetti strings that struggled to contain her DD’s. The strings were fighting a losing battle.
>
The brunette wore black yoga pants with the sorority’s letters across her tight ass. Both girls were whispering in Emma’s ear. They’d look to me, then giggle, then look away. Despite how hot these girls were, they were acting shy and bashful. It struck me as a little odd.

I glanced around again, looking behind me to see if anyone else had shown up that might be the subject of their attention. But sure enough, these girls were looking at me.

The two sorority girls shoved Emma in my direction and she stumbled toward me. Her cheeks flushed, and she lowered her head. Then she looked up at me with those piercing eyes, then looked away.

I swallowed hard as she approached, and the closer she got, the harder my chest pounded. By the time she was standing in front of me, I was sure she could hear my heartbeat.

  “You’re Benjamin, right?”

“Uh, yeah,” my voice cracked. It was mortifying. My throat was dry, and I suddenly had a tough time speaking. “Ben. It’s just Ben now.”

“You sat behind me in trigonometry, right?”

“Wow, I didn’t think you noticed.”

Emma smiled. “Of course I noticed, silly.”

Her words rolled off her tongue and massaged my ears. Her full lips had a freshly applied coat of gloss. I couldn’t help but imagine what they would feel like pressed against mine.

Her green eyes looked at me with a slightly lascivious glint. “You really have grown up over the summer.”

“Uh, thanks, I guess.” I didn’t feel much different from high school.

“Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for all the math help. I wouldn’t have gotten accepted here otherwise. I needed at least a B in that class to get my GPA up—and I got it!” Her eyes sparkled. “All because of you.”

A smile tugged at my lips. I couldn’t believe she was thanking me. I’d have done her homework for her, if she’d have let me. I stammered, trying not to sound desperate, “My pleasure. If you need help with anything here, just let me know…”

She paused for a moment and a curious look curled on her face. “Actually, I kind of do need your help with something.”

I had an eager look on my face. I was sitting there like a puppy dog waiting for a treat. I would do anything for this girl. I’d polish her floor with my tongue. I’d clean her toilets, do her laundry, carry her books to class—anything. “Sure, what is it?”

“Well,” her cheeks flushed, and her bashful eyes looked to the ground as she swayed from side to side.

I wanted to blurt out “Yes” right then and there, but I figured it would be best for me to wait until she actually asked a question.

  2

I couldn’t believe what came out of her mouth next. I thought for sure she was going to ask for help with calculus, defining the area under a curve, or wanting me to explain limits. That in and of itself would have made me jizz my pants, but I thought I was going to have a heart attack when she finally blurted out the question.

“I’m pledging Alpha Epsilon Omega, and we are having a mixer with Kappa Chi. And…” she glanced away and her cheeks reddened. “I was just wondering if you’d be my date.”

I swallowed hard. My heart was in my throat. The birds squawked in the trees overhead. I thought for sure one of them was going to take a dump on me. It would be just my luck. I wasn’t sure I had heard her correctly. Did she just ask me out? I had to be hallucinating. Maybe somebody slipped something in my drink when I wasn’t looking. I was dreaming. I was still in bed, in the dorm, dreaming. This was some type of fantasy. The alarm was going to go off any minute now. I was gonna wake up with wood, and my hopes crushed.

  But this wasn’t a dream.

Before I had a chance to answer, Emma decided to fill the awkward, empty space. “I mean if you’re busy, or you don’t want to go, it’s totally okay, it won’t hurt my feelings.”

“No,” I said, my voice scratchy and dry.

She looked genuinely depressed. Her body slumped at the word ”No.”

“I’m not busy. I’d love to go,” I added quickly.

Her frown turned into a beaming smile and she hopped up and down, expressing her joy. Her perky breasts jiggled in her bra, and I thought my eyes were going to explode at the sight.

“Awesome. I was so afraid you were going to say no,” she said.

  “Really?”

“Sure. I mean you’re smart, funny, and you’re going places. I’m so sick of jocks. All they talk about is football, and they never listen to anything I have to say. I want a guy who has prospects after college. Besides, you were always kind to me in high school. Most guys see this,” she pointed to her body, “and they just want to hit it and quit it. But, I don’t get that vibe from you at all.”

  “Oh, no, I don’t want to… hit… that… I mean… you’re totally hot… but… I’m just going to shut up.”

Emma chuckled. She dug into her purse and handed me a small flyer with the details of the party. “I’ll meet you there. This will get you into the party. Just show it at the door.”

I looked over the flyer, still stunned. “Thanks.”

“You can bring your friend too. There will be plenty of singles there.”

  Curtis’s eyes lit up.

“Are either of you pledging?” Emma asked.

“No,” I said. “I don’t think I’m going to have time with my course load.”

“Kappa Chi is a great fraternity. Don’t rule them out. You might meet some life-long friends tonight.”

I didn’t care about meeting new friends, I cared about spending time with Emma. But I had to admit, I was a little nervous. I didn’t think I was really going to fit in around a bunch of frat boys. These were the very same types of guys who kicked my ass on a routine basis in high school. But I figured, for Emma, it was worth the risk.

“I’ll see you tonight,” Emma said. “You better not stand me up.”

“I won’t.” Someone would have to be crazy to stand her up. I couldn’t imagine it had ever happened to her in all her 18 years.

She spun around, and her miniskirt twirled, lifting with the breeze. My eyes fixed on her cotton panties and her firm ass. She sauntered away strolling back to her friends. My eyes were glued to her luscious curves.

Curtis punched me in the deltoid. “Dude! That was insane!”

  “Did that really happen?”

“No fucking way. You are the man!”

I shrugged, feigning modesty. “Well, when you got it, you got it. Chicks are drawn to the intellect,” I said casually.

Emma looked back at me and smiled. She waved as she strolled away with her pledge sisters.

Curtis had to put his tongue back in his mouth. It took him a few moments to come back down to earth. But then he floated back into space with delusions of grandeur. “Holy shit! We’re going to a party. We got invited to a fucking party. This is the beginning of a new era. We are going to leave nerd-dom behind, and enter the realm of manhood.” He lowered his voice, puffed out his chest, and tried to sound macho and suave. “We’re finally going to be part of the cool crowd. I mean, that girl is hot, and she just asked you out. Playa’!”

  I couldn’t help but grin.

“I knew college was going to open up a whole new world for us.”

To this point in my life, it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. But panic was starting to set in. It enveloped me like a wave and pulled me down to the bottom. I was definitely in over my head with a girl like Emma Michaels. I had never really been on a date before. I didn’t know what to do, or what to say, or when to make a move. Make a move? Geez. I had been dreaming of making a move my whole life, now I was scared shitless about it.

I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. Every nerve in my body tingled with excitement. My stomach twisted with nervous anticipation. It was probably best not to hyperventilate and pass out. That would be bad. My one chance at spending an evening with a hot girl, and the last thing I needed was to be so freaked out that I couldn’t leave my dorm
.

I figured it was best to get back to my room and start preparing. Brush my teeth, take a shower, style my hair, and hopefully find some clean clothes to wear. Curtis and I lived in Kingston Hall. I'm not sure why the richest sounding names always belonged to the shittiest dorm rooms. Kingston Hall was where all the poor kids lived. I had gotten into the University on an academic scholarship, but even then, it was difficult to make ends meet. My step dad couldn’t afford to spare a nickel, and even if he could, he wouldn’t have spent it on me. But, I wasn't here to live a life of luxury. That would hopefully come later in life, after I had earned my degree. But it seemed like degrees were becoming increasingly useless.

Our room was a mess. Clothes littered the floor. Empty pizza boxes and soda cans cluttered the desks. The walls were plastered with pictures of girls, exotic cars, and sci-fi spaceships. It wasn't exactly the kind of place where you brought chicks back after a party. In truth, Curtis and I never thought we'd have visitors. That still wasn't guaranteed, but in the back of my mind I was hoping that I might end up back in my dorm room with Emma. I was sure that wasn't going to happen tonight, but maybe someday?

I decided to tidy up a bit, just in case.

We shared a bathroom with our suite mates, Mark and Bill. As crappy as Kingston Hall was, at least we didn't have to deal with public showers. That would have been humiliating. The thought of being naked in front of other people wasn't something I was comfortable with. The last thing I needed was people making fun of my dick. I hated PE in high school at shower time. I got teased mercilessly. Hey, I’m a grower not a shower. I certainly didn’t want anyone talking about the size of my junk for the rest of my college career.
