The Lycan Chronicles Page 33

by Schroeder, Brent

Bentley Chase, rich boy, 17. Thought he was better than most and had the deepest baby-blue eyes, that were fully-capable of glamourizing anyone, with just a simple stare. “Hurry up, Stark,” he complained. “You’re always in my fucking way. Move it, son, or I’ll walk right through you.”

“Fuck off, ball-hog,” Chris snipped back, as he unsnagged his coat.

Bill Johnson, the last one to leave the van after his two arguing friends, was 18 and standing tall at six-foot, ten. The center for the Black Wings was known as the silent type, but he was certainly not known as the brightest bulb in the box.

Jason’s posse of basketball players approached the ongoing party, walking straight towards the group surrounding the bonfire, meshing through the crowd of kids who were drinking tapped beer out of red plastic cups. The sweet smell of high-quality herb hung in the air and a few joints were being passed around. A couple kids were doing whip-its and falling all over each other, by someone’s truck; Bentley stuck his foot out and tripped one of them, as he made his way through the party.

Sebastian and Moonflower were sitting by the fire, hugging and sharing a beer, when they were rudely interrupted by a couple of the guys from the Wings.

“So, you’re Sebastian?” Edward asked first. “Don’t look like much, from here. What do you guys think?” he asked, looking back at his teammates, with a smug look on his face.

Moonflower grabbed Sebastian tight; she didn’t want him getting too angry… she didn’t want him to lose control.

Bentley stepped up to run his mouth some. “You’re right. I thought he’d be a lot bigger,” he stabbed. “I bet I could take him… and take his little ball, too.”

“Who are you guys?” Sebastian asked, as he stood up to confront them. “And, what the hell is your problem, this is our party. We’re not here to put up with a bunch of bullshit… so, if you guys are looking for trouble, I promise you guys that you’ll regret it.”

“We’re the Black Wings basketball team,” Edward informed him. “We’re here to see what the guy who shattered that backboard looks like. And, it looks like we wasted a trip… but, then again, maybe not,” he stated, as he glared over at Moonflower, giving her a wink.

Sebastian was offended, but he also remembered what his father taught him, about keeping his cool; he already knew he could wipe the woods with them all.

“Now that you’ve seen me,” Sebastian returned. “I think it would be best if you left, along with your nasty attitudes.”

“Oh, really?” Edward asked with a smile. “Or, you’ll do what?”

Taking a step towards Edward, Sebastian answered, “Or, you will be removed. And, it might not be in one piece.”

A few of Sebastian’s teammates saw a conflict rising and they were beginning to round themselves up, closing in behind, to back him up.

Jasper Whistley, stood at Sebastian’s side, at a perfect six-foot, three inches. He cracked his knuckles and flexed his arms, as he spoke, “There a problem here? Do I need to start cracking some heads, Sebastian?”

“No. They were just leaving, weren’t you?”

Chumlee was now weighing-in, at around four hundred pounds, standing on the other side of Sebastian, with the personality of an inbred county boy. “Want me to crush ‘em?” he asked, looking the boys over. “I’ll flip and flatten you guys, like pancakes… and, then I’ll eat you!”

Chumlee looked over at Edward. “I think I’ll start with pretty boy, right here. I’ll use you for a toothpick, when I’m done with your asshole friends!”

The Vampires all roared with laughter, but they were turning around to head back to their van. Edward turned his head, as he walked off, shouting to Moonflower, “Hey, when you’re ready for a real man, I have my eyes on you. See you both at the finals.”

Edward blew her a kiss and smiled, before crawling into the van. The door slid shut and the van pulled away, not a minute too soon.

Moonflower stuck close to Sebastian, trying to keep him grounded. He was becoming visibly angry, so she held tightly to his hand, squeezing it every few seconds, to let him know that he needed to keep himself in check. She knew that if Sebastian lost control, the consequences would be devastating. Moonflower grabbed Sebastian by his face and she looked deeply into his eyes, in an attempt to catch a glimpse of his soul. She, for some reason, felt that it would be a good idea to reassure him that she was his forever. “Look into my eyes… you’re the only one for me, Sebastian. Don’t let them get into your head, alright? They’re only humans, for Christ’s sakes,” she reminded him. “And, fucking assholes, on top of that. Just wait to take it out on them on the court.”

“I don’t know why that asshole even got to me, he had the attitude of a fucking smartass Vampire,” Sebastian said to her. “I wanted to knock his teeth out, so bad. Thanks for holding me back. If he would’ve said one more thing to you….”

“They’re just trying to get into your head for the final game,” Moonflower said, cutting him off. “We both know you’re bigger than that, in more than one way. Maybe after the game, I’ll let you kick his ass… but just don’t kill him, he’s human. Rule number one, we can’t kill the humans,” she laughed, trying to cheer him up. “Even, if they do deserve a good ass whipping.”

“Too bad they weren’t Vampires,” Sebastian replied. “Pretty ballsy for a human, but I don’t know. Something just doesn’t seem right about those guys… I can’t quite put my finger on it. I heard a heartbeat and I could feel their warmth, but something about their smell just wasn’t right.”

“Don’t worry, Sebastian,” Chumlee piped in. “I got your back. I’ll crush any one of ‘em, if they even look at Moonflower again.”

“Thanks, Chum, just don’t crush me by mistake,” Sebastian replied to his friend.

“Let’s get this party back into action!” Jasper shouted, as he ran and snatched up one of the cheerleaders, throwing her over his shoulder. “Come here, girly! You know, I didn’t get into basketball just for the game!”

Moonflower was laughing hysterically. “Jasper, you’re such a man whore!”

“I do, what I got to do, to get what I want and when it comes to the ladies, I just got to have it!” Jasper yelled, as he set down the squealing girl.

“Whatever!” Moonflower yelled back. “You wouldn’t know a good time, if it fell out of the sky and landed on your face!”

“Ha, ha, what do you know?”

“Enough, you two,” Sebastian jumped in. “Both of you… shut the hell up!”

Moonflower smacked him lightly on the face, as she stood up to go look for a couple of her friends; she’d had enough time with the boys. One of her best friends, Tanya Christian, was a strawberryblonde, the sexy model-type and a cheerleader and she was sitting on a bale of hay with another one of Moonflower’s closest friends, who went by the name of Whisper Winds.

Whisper Winds, was more of a gothic type, with black fingernails, piercings and tattoos. And, although she looked like a Vampire, she was not. Instead, Whisper had been into Wicca, since the day she was born and she was a witch, as well as a good advisor to the Lycans. “Moonflower, over here!” she called out to her friend.

Both girls were waving their hands, trying to get her attention and Moonflower finally saw them, running over and giving them both hugs.

“Good game we had this week,” Moonflower said excitedly. “We’re going to win state, I know it! There’s no way we’re losing to that bunch of suckers.”

“Forget the game,” Whisper replied. “Who was that hot guy that blew you a kiss?” she asked, laughing. “I bet that pissed Sebastian off! I’m surprised, he didn’t kick his ass!”

“Yeah,” said Tanya. “Tell us about him… he was so hot!”

“That guy was a total dick. And, it took every bit of my strength to keep Sebastian from blowing his lid,” Moonflower said to them. “That guy needs a good ass kicking and he just might get one, after the game. So yeah, don’t either of you two even think of messing with
him… he’s an asshole.”

Tanya still had to ask her, “Who was he, anyways?”

“He was the captain of the Black Wings. And, they all seemed like a bunch of smartass punks, with no manners and zero class. Real creeps,” Moonflower added. “And, something else didn’t seem right about them.”

“They weren’t Vampires, were they? They did look kind of pale,” Whisper noted. “I caught a weird vibe coming off them, but I couldn’t pick out what it was.”

“No,” Moonflower answered. “I thought the same thing, at first, but I could hear their heartbeats and they gave off warmth. It’s something else.”

Just as she finished speaking, a Harley Davidson motorcycle pulled up, carrying Sebastian’s best friend, Mitch Daniels. Mitch shut off the ignition to his bike and the engine stopped running.

“What’s up, dip shit?” Mitch asked. “Who were those assholes I just saw leaving in such a hurry? The shit bags almost ran me down.”

“That was the Black Wings,” Sebastian told him. “The undefeated team we’re playing in the finals… talk about a bunch of fucking jerks. I wanted to stick the team captain’s head up his own ass, but Moonflower wouldn’t let me.”

“I expect to foul-out, when we play ‘em,” Chumlee threw in.

“Don’t worry about those chumps,” replied Mitch. “We’ll crush them.”

“That’s not what I’m worried about,” Sebastian explained. “There’s something not right with that bunch. You should’ve seen how arrogant they were, it was just unbelievable. They insulted me and hit on Moonflower, to the point where I almost lost it… and we all know that’s not good.”

“Want me to catch up and kick that guy’s ass? You know I’d do anything for you, bro,” Mitch said, walking back towards his bike.

“No, get back here,” Sebastian told him. “We’ll wipe the court with them in the championship, I’ll be sure to throw plenty of elbows, when the ref isn’t looking. I’ll pull every dirty trick in the book, if I can get away with it.”

Mitch threw his arms around Sebastian and Moonflower, hugging them both. “Come on, you two love birds! The night is young and it’s time for some fun. Someone get me a beer, for cryin’ out loud! I came to get drunk! I’m also here to please the ladies, so let’s get it on!”

Moonflower laughed and shoved Mitch towards the kegs. “Just stay away from my friends, you get me? Not unless you’ve been to the vet and had all your shots.”

  Chapter Forty-Six

Back across the Atlantic Ocean, in Alnwick Castle, five Vampires practiced with a variety of different weapons, from small handguns, to fully-automatic rifles, to throwing stars made of pure silver. Each Vampire assassin was training and getting into perfect shape, before leaving for the United States, as ordered by the Baron.

“Are you ready?” the Baron asked, as he entered the chambers, where the weapons were stored. “I need you to prove to them, that I can still reach across the great ocean and enforce my will.”

“We are almost ready,” replied Ouija. “Trust me… the situation in Wolf Creek will be handled. Mason Rockwell and Terrence Armstrong were both friends of mine, for thousands of years,” his deep voice said. “I will find out what happened and I will take care of it, even if it means that I never return. I give you my word, my Baron Valvasor.”

“Just get the job done and keep me informed,” the Baron impatiently said. “How soon will you be ready to leave? They should think, by now, that I believed their cock and bull story.”

“One week,” replied Ouija. “You can go ahead and make all the arrangements, but don’t let anyone know that we are coming, not even Leon. I would like to appear as translucent as a ghost,” the Vampire assassin said, as he continued to practice, unloading magazines of ammo into the bodies that were hanging from hooks, at the other end of the room.

“You just keep preparing, I’ll take care of everything else,” the Baron told him. “And, when you get there, you just observe them first. Then later, you can take the right actions, as we have discussed.”

“It’s going to be bloody,” Ouija promised, putting one of the assault rifles to his shoulder. He took aim and as the bullets flew, chunks of human meat blasted from one of the corpses suspended at the far end of the shooting range.

“I would expect nothing less,” said the Baron, as he turned to leave. “They deserve nothing less.”

The headlines all said the same thing, in several papers across the Midwest: ‘One year since five basketball players disappear. Foul play suspected.’ The story continued on, ‘Five top players have gone missing, vanished without a trace. No ransom was asked, but it appears that the missing boys may have been lured, by an invitation on the social media website, Facebook. The investigation is still ongoing and it’s been one full year since the individuals disappeared, from several different locations across five Midwestern states.’

JD put down the paper and took a sip of his coffee… then it suddenly hit him.

“Sarah! I need you to do some actual work and make some calls, maybe receive some faxes! I know that’s asking a lot!”

“What do you want, smartass?” Sarah called back.

“Contact the newspapers and the local police in these towns, where those basketball players disappeared last year. Can you do it right away, please?”

  “Alright, but why?”

“I just have a funny feeling, Sarah, that’s all. I want current pictures of the missing players, too, please. I’m going on patrol… I’ll be back in a while.”

“Soon as I get the information, I’ll let you know, JD.”

“Thank you, my dear,” replied JD, as he grabbed his coat from the rack. Just as he was stepping out the door, he ran into Nate.

“Where are you going?” Nate inquired.

“Going out on patrol, want to come along?”

“Sure, why not. Sounds better than listening to my wife gripe,” Nate said, offering a smile.

Both men walked together down the broken front steps of the police station; there were chunks of concrete still missing from them and other parts of the structure. But, the broken windows have long since been replaced and there were about 20,000 bullet holes visibly patched on the outside of the building, from their mishap with the Vampires a few years back. They’d been promised a new station, but so far, none of the new Vampires had been around long enough to put anything into motion. And, to the Lycans, that was alright by them.

JD and Nate climbed into the Sheriff’s truck, that had also been long since replaced and they fired up the engine, to let it warm up before they set out on patrol. Actually, they were going to check on the site, where they’d buried the burned up limo that brought their dearly-departed Vampire friend, Terrence Armstrong to Wolf Creek. It was about an hour drive, so JD threw his old, favorite Disturbed CD into the player, cranking up the song, ‘Down with the Sickness.’ It kicked in, full blast, as the officers of the law rolled down the highway. JD was into the sounds, driving like a madman, seeming to forget that not everyone out on the road was immortal, passing every car and weaving in and out of traffic.

Upon arriving on the scene, where the limo had been buried, a blanket of snow had already fallen, covering its place. JD wanted to reassure himself that he’d chosen the proper place and he was once again confident that no one would find it. Nate and JD both sniffed the air, neither of them smelling any trace of the dead Vampires, or anyone else. Contented, they climbed back into the police truck and headed back towards Wolf Creek.

  Chapter Forty-Seven

The English teacher at Wolf Creek High School wrote on the chalkboard, with her back turned to the classroom. Moonflower took advantage of the moment, turning around to smile at Sebastian, who was sitting in the back row. He smiled back, while he was taking took notes, looking up from his desk through his thick, blonde hair, that almost completely hid his eyes.

  Their teacher quickly turned aro
und and noticed them playing kissy face. “Moonflower,” the she scolded. “Eyes forward and pay attention, please. Sebastian isn’t going anywhere, are you Sebastian?”

“No,” Sebastian shyly replied. “My feet are planted, firm. Continue, please.”

“Good, then. Both of you pay attention, NOW!” she shouted,

causing Mitch, who was nodding off and falling asleep, to abruptly

  jolt upright in his seat.

“Yes, ma’am!” they all three shouted, Mitch not really sure what

  was going on.

Moonflower turned around and smiled, one more time, not caring

  what the teacher thought.

The bell finally rang and all the kids escaped into the outer hallway,

running to their lockers to exchange their books and spread gossip.

Moonflower was at her locker, bending over to pick up her books,

when Sebastian came up from behind and smacked her on the butt.

She yelped and shot straight up, turning around to plant a kiss on

  Sebastian’s lips.

She gathered her books and the two of them continued down the

hallway, when Moonflower suddenly yanked his arm, pulling him into

the janitor’s closet. Sebastian locked the door, as they kiss frantically

and Moonflower turned around, hiking up her dress for Sebastian,

while he pulled her white cotton panties down around her ankles. He

cupped his hand over her mouth, to muffle her cries, as he slipped inside of her, giving it to her with everything he had. They hurried to pleasure each other and a couple short minutes later, they were both slipped back into their seats, ready for history class before the bell

  rang.

The lesson for the day was about Louis and Clark and how they

mapped Indiana, along with the surrounding area. The first set of

explorers sent to do the job had disappeared without a trace and it

was rumored that they were killed and eaten by a pack of bloodthirsty
