“I’m fine. I’ve had worse. Kane, this area is VIP, with security watching it constantly, how the hell did anyone get close enough to rig a bomb on the car?”
It left me in awe, how strong my woman was. If not for the paleness of her face, the way her hands shook, you’d never know she was terrified.
“We’ll worry about that later. Come on, get up, baby.” I gently helped her to her feet, hating the fear I could feel in her. Hating this nameless, faceless woman who had put her in danger again. “I swear, when I get my hands on this Ferrara bitch, I’m going to cut out her heart and feed it to her.”
“I’ll hand you the fucking knife.”
Keeping her close to me, I took out my phone and called David.
It was a few minutes after I got in the back of the limo with Kane before my heartbeat seemed to return to something resembling normal rhythm. Kane insisted we be away from the scene before the cops could question us, showing the same aversion to cops as he had to doctors. No wonder why. With his family’s connection to the Mob, he couldn’t afford to have police asking questions.
“David, how the hell did this woman get anyone near the car?” Kane asked the same question I had earlier. “Is there any possibility she had someone rig it before we left the hotel?”
He shook his head. “No. I would have found the bomb. Besides, just like the incident in Big Bear, she would have had to know which car to rig.”
“So, she had us followed.” I leaned back in the seat, rubbing my temples. A dull headache was starting to form there.
“Yes. I won’t know for sure until I can get a look at the wreckage, but I’m guessing she had someone on the inside, working at the theater. Someone who knew you two were coming.”
Kane looked at me. “Come here.” He pulled me into his arms so that I sat with my back against his chest. I snuggled in, leaning my head against his shoulder.
“This is insane.” I sighed, closing my eyes, trying not to let the terror that tried to bubble up in me take hold. “She won’t stop until we’re dead, Kane.”
“Shh.” He kissed my hair, smoothing it back. “Yes, she will. Because I’ll find her and kill her.”
It unsettled me that when he talked like that, it no longer brought fear or worry, but instead comforted me. I knew, whatever happened, Kane would protect us both.
“Look, David and I will need to start searching for who planted that bomb. I want you to stay with Gala until I come for you. She has a house in Manhattan. She’s surrounded by guards, you’ll be safe there.”
I nodded. I didn’t want to be far from him, but I knew what he had to do.
“I’ll take you inside before we leave.”
“Okay.”
David pulled up at Gala’s mansion, a much smaller one than the one in Cali, but still grand nonetheless. He shut off the car to wait for Kane. Kane and I went inside.
Gala’s butler led us to the west wing. “She’s in her private chambers. I’ll get her for you.”
“That’s all right, we’ll find her.” Kane walked with me up a set of stairs toward a room down a long, darkly carpeted hall.
“This place is gorgeous. Are all her homes this extravagant?”
“Most of them. It’s her dad. He insists she has only the best. She hates it, for the most part.”
At her door, Kane knocked. When he called, she didn’t answer. “She probably fell asleep. She’s been busy with shoots lately. Gala?” He knocked again.
The door opened a little with his knocking. Something made me look down, toward the floor of the room I could just see inside the door. Part of what looked like a lamp lay in shattered pieces on the navy carpet. Adrenaline rushed through me.
“Kane.” I pointed.
He stiffened, then he shoved the door open and rushed in, with me following.
“Gala!” He called out, making his way through a private living room area, toward a back bedroom.
No answer.
“Gala,” I called. I hated the way my heart galloped in my chest.
Still nothing. At the door, Kane pulled out his gun and shoved into the bedroom.
“Shit. Anika, stay back.” Voice suddenly rough, he turned, pushing me back out into the hall, shielding my line of sight with his frame.
Instinctively, I pushed past him just enough to see what lay further into the room.
“Oh my God.” I covered my mouth, horror coursing through me like ice.
Gala Rossi lay splayed across her bed, unmoving, deep slashes slicing across her face. Her eyes stared upward, unseeing.
