They always leave. It’s my fault. I didn’t love her right away. Why didn’t I love her right away?!

"Emmalin? Emmalin?” My shoulders were gently shaken as Hawkins looked at me with worry. “We’re going to get you to the hospital, okay?”

I felt myself nod, or at least I thought I did. “Can you take me?” I whispered.

“I won’t leave your side.” He felt my face. “You’re warm.” He took off his coat, wrapped it around me, and then picked me up.

It didn’t take long for us to reach the hospital. I remembered being so cold, and everything moving so fast. I heard Grayson’s voice, but I couldn’t see him. Everyone was running around. Then the pain started again. I remembered mumbling, “Save Flick over me. Save Flick.”

  Then everything went black.

  Chapter Seventy-Eight

  Grayson

I stood outside the Level Three Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Baby Girl Mandrake had been born two months prematurely. With the level of blood loss, there was no way she could stay inside Emmalin’s womb. She came in at 2 lbs., 2.5 oz. She was so tiny, I couldn’t even hold her. I couldn’t hold my own daughter. I didn’t know what was worse. Not being able to hold her, or the fact that I hadn’t been able to witness her birth.

A tear rolled down my face and I shut my eyes, remembering that just a few hours earlier, we had been happy. We had been so happy when we’d found out we were having a girl. Emmalin had been so thrilled when the little strings of pink flew out of the cans. It had been perfect. Everything had been perfect. We’d had two more months.

A hand touched my back. “She’s beautiful, Grayson.” I nodded. “Did you guys discuss any names?”

I let out a low laugh. “No. We kept calling it Flick. We just found out the sex today.” I rubbed my hand through my hair. I turned to face Isabella. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this.” My voice cracked.

She stared through the glass. “Well, I think we’ve all learned by now that things don’t always go as planned, but in the end, they work out.” She pulled me in for a hug. I stayed for a few more minutes before going back down the hall.

I quietly opened the door and was greeted with a small smile. “How are you feeling?”

  “Tired,” she whispered.

I handed her some water. “She’s beautiful. Looks just like you.” I took out my phone and showed her the video of our baby sleeping. “She’s not breathing on her own yet, but she will soon. She’s a Mandrake. She’ll out breathe that damn machine.”

Emmalin giggled at the video before flinching, and I gently laid a hand over her. “Sleeping already? Man, she’s lazy. Just like her father.”

I laughed, pulling her to me gently. “I’m so sorry, Grayson.” She started crying.

“Shh, none of that. You’re here. Our baby is here. That’s all that matters, okay? I love you both, and would protect you both with my life.”

She was quiet as she sniffed. “Can you play the video again?”

“I’ll play it all night.” I hit play on my phone.

  Emmalin

Emersyn Tyler-Renee Mandrake came home six weeks later. It killed me that I hadn’t gotten to see her be born. She had been so tiny that she was quickly whisked away, and I barely heard her cry before they were rushing her out. I remembered Grayson running into my room and, even though I was in pain, the only words I could say were, “Go to our daughter. Make sure she’s okay.” He had hesitated for half a second before running to the NICU. I didn’t want him to come back without her.

“We don’t have a name,” I silently whispered after the video played for the twentieth time. A single tear rolled down my face.

Grayson gently pulled me closer. “I was thinking about that while I was watching her. She’s so beautiful Emmalin. She looks like the both of us.”

I smiled. “She’s us.” I sighed as I started to drift off again. “She’s Emersyn.”

She has Grayson wrapped around her little finger, and that girl had a grip on her like you wouldn’t believe. I was thinking gymnast, if she had no interest in the corporate world.

Christmas time with a new baby was an amazing feeling, and also a little nerve-racking. I agreed to have Lydia spend Christmas with us. At first I didn’t welcome the idea, but eventually I came around. It was a little awkward at first, but I could tell she was really trying to make a good impression. She found out I did a lot of crocheting, and was very interested in me showing her how to crochet. She was very patient with it.

“Can you teach me baby socks?” Lydia looked to me with her sparkling blue eyes.

“Sure, they’re really easy. Do you have a lot of friends with babies?”

She shook her head. “Not exactly.” She took my hand and placed it on her stomach. My eyes widened, and she smiled.

Grayson, had just laid Emersyn down to bed. “The way she puts up such a fuss about bed time, she’s totally your child.” I laughed. “It’s like she’s trying to negotiate with me or something, and I know she’s tired. She knows she’s tired but she’s still fussing, and I just look at her and I think to myself, ‘You are Emmalin’s daughter.’”

I laughed. “Like mother, like daughter.” I grew somber. “She’s getting big.”

He laid on top of me, pulling my shirt up. “What are you talking about? She can’t even hold her head up.”

“Well, I know, but…do you want more? I mean, I don’t know if it can happen again, but if it can or can’t, do you want more?”

“If it can happen again, then hell yeah. If it can’t, then we have her. We were lucky.”

I moaned as he twirled his tongue around my nipple. “Would you ever consider adoption?”

He looked at me thoughtfully for a moment, and then smiled. “Yeah. We can adopt.”

  “I love you Grayson.”

“Just remember who said it first, Mrs. Mandrake.” He nipped my collarbone. “But first things first—I have a few punishments I need to dole out.”

I gazed at him, wide eyed.

  “Punishments?”

“Mmmhmm. Throughout your entire pregnancy, I took it easy on you. I allowed you to be bratty, mouthy, not to mention beyond feisty. There were times I wanted to shove my cock in your mouth just to get you to shut up.”

I threw my head back and laughed. “You can’t blame me for the hormones.”

“Doesn’t matter. I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment, and that moment is now.”

I narrowed my eyes at him and licked my lips. “Do your worst, Mr. Mandrake.”

He gave me a sinister smile. “Oh don’t you worry, Mrs. Mandrake. I want to see your tears and hear you beg—and you know how I love it when you beg.”

I felt myself already getting hot from his promises. He whispered against my lips. “Who owns your pleasure?”

  “You do.”

  He grinned. “Let’s begin.”

  Acknowledgments

Well! That's that. It hurts my soul, because I loved these characters so much. They were my babies, so to say goodbye to them, is shattering for me. I have to say a huge Thank you to everyone, that enjoyed the Incapable series, and stuck with me on this. And yeah. I get it. There were times, when I wanted to beat the crap out of them too. So no, you were not alone in that. I'm also sorry, but not sorry about the death, in Unjustly Destroyed that occurred. Someone had to take one for the team.

While the Incapable series is over, I assure you of at least one thing. You haven't seen the last of Grayson Mandrake. You never know when or where he may pop up.

If you enjoyed this book, I would appreciate your help so others can enjoy it too. Everyone could use a little Grayson Mandrake in their lives.
