Dru shook his head again in derision. He didn’t get battle shock. Especially not from fighting Darkened creatures, even if they were ten times the size they were supposed to be.

He resisted another wave of nausea, willing himself to keep upright. Cierra was right, there was only one more large crack to get over and then they’d be at the island.

He summoned his retreating strength, picking Cierra up and leaping the void. It took more effort than he’d expected. He almost dropped her as they landed heavily.

He blinked several times. Something was definitely wrong. It felt like there was fire racing through his veins, followed by a painful chill. Why was the ice rocking so much? It was hard to keep his balance.

Some part of his brain knew what was happening. The darts must have held some sort of poison and it had gotten into his system. He knew that the ice couldn’t be rocking that much, it was the poison affecting him.

“Dru. Dru!” Cierra’s worried face swam into view in front of him. No, her faces. She had several. Which one was he supposed to focus on? “Snap out of it, Dru!”

“The palace!” he gasped. “Poisoned... healers...” He started to stumble forwards. The palace would have a healer, most likely several. If he could make it that far.

He slipped and fell, skull cracking against the ice. He couldn’t feel the coldness of the ice as he faded into unconsciousness.
