“You first.” She grasped the hem of his T-shirt and drew it up until he shrugged it off. God, he was gorgeous. Inside and out. She pressed her palms to his chest, feeling the way his heart jackhammered. Sliding her hands down slope of his pecs and the hard ridges of his stomach, she found the button on his fly and unfastened it. His zipper rasped when she opened it.

After kicking aside his sandals, he hooked his fingers through his belt loops and pulled, sliding his pants and boxers off in one motion. She reached back to untie her skirt and the gauze fabric floated to the floor. Her panties quickly followed, and then they were both nude. He palmed her hips, backing her toward the bed.

“No.” She put a hand on his chest and he froze, uncertainty flashing in his gaze. “I want to be on top this time.”

The position was one she usually avoided, because every inch of her was in plain view, every bump and roll exposed for her lover to see while she bounced on top of him. Her shyness and insecurity took a double hit in that position. But, with Derek, it felt right. Everything felt right with him.

“Yes, ma’am,” he drawled, grinning like mad, but settled obediently onto the bed. He watched her, his erection a hard arc against his taut belly. “You are so damn lovely.”

It was easy to believe when he looked at her that way. And he’d offered to keep doing that for the rest of her life. That sounded like just long enough. She grabbed a condom from the box on the nightstand, set a knee on the mattress next to his hip, and swung the other one over so she straddled him. She braced a hand on his chest to steady herself.

He covered her fingers with his. “You okay?”

Even without her telling him, he knew this was an act of trust for her. One more reason why she loved him so much. She trusted him. She was comfortable with him. That was a gift she would never, ever take for granted.

“Yeah.” She met his gaze so he knew she spoke the truth. He nodded and released her hand. She ripped open the condom, tossed aside the empty wrapper, and rolled the rubber on to him. His shaft jerked in her hand and his hips arched into her touch.

His breath hissed in, his fists balled in the sheets, and his eyes glittered like diamonds. “I love your hands on me, sweetheart. You have no idea.”

“I think I do.” Because she loved having him touch her just as much. As if he’d read her mind, he reached between them, his long fingers toying with her damp folds. Good Lord, that felt absolutely divine, but that wasn’t how she wanted this to go. So, she grasped his erection, lifted herself up, and sank down on him.

Groaning, he reared upward, driving himself into her to the hilt. She gasped, her head falling back at the sweet feel of him stretching her deep within. She’d thought this would never happen again, and it was so perfect, so right. She pushed up, loving the drag of his flesh in hers. His hands bracketed her hips, pulling her toward him so he could plunge deep. Their eyes met and locked, neither of them looking away. She could see everything he was feeling as she moved on him—his love for her, his unfettered desire, his struggle with control while he let her ride him. Up and down, again and again, faster and faster. Sweat slipped down their faces and the way their skin slapped together echoed in the room. Still she couldn’t stop, driven toward that tantalizing peak.

His features tensed, his breathing an erratic rasp, and she could tell he was close to orgasm. He reached between them and thumbed her sensitive nub, making her legs jerk and quiver. Ecstasy twisted within her, coiling like a spring ready to snap.

“Tell me,” he gasped. “I need—”

“I love you, Derek.” And then she broke, her sex contracting around his shaft, pleasure exploding deep inside her. Her inner muscles flexed in rhythmic spasms that went on forever. Still, she held his gaze, needing to see him join her in the wild, unstoppable maelstrom.

“I love you, too. Always.” He shuddered, bucking beneath her as he came hard. His eyes closed and his hands gripped her hips tight enough to leave bruises. “I love you so damn much.”

Bending forward, she brushed her lips over his. “I love you more.”

He pulled her down to lay on his chest, and she heard the pounding of his heart. She didn’t know how long they stayed that way as time become elastic, stretching while she drifted down from the high. His fingers stroked over the trailing length of her hair and down her back. She shivered at the ticklish sensation.

Finally, he set her aside gently and pushed himself upright. “I’ll be back in a minute. I need to clean up.”

He disappeared into the bathroom, giving her a moment to think. Reality finally sank in and she couldn’t hold back a smile. He loved her. Derek Forrester loved her. The shy, geeky good girl next door. If someone had told her this was where she’d be a week ago, she’d have laughed in their faces, but there was no denying the earnestness of his words. He loved her. And she loved him. Maybe it didn’t make sense on the surface, but as he’d pointed out, their most important values matched up perfectly. And, really, who could love him better than she could? Who else would remind him there was sunshine when things seemed dark and bleak? Who else could make him smile or laugh as often as she could? No one. As unlikely as it seemed, she was exactly what he needed, and he was the one who’d given her the confidence to believe it.

He came back to bed and propped himself on an elbow beside her. “I’m not sure I’m a good bet for you, Katie, but I know I’m finally ready to move forward with my life. I’d like to do that with you by my side.”

That was what she wanted, too. More than anything. Reaching up, she trailed a fingertip across his cheekbone. “Is that a marriage proposal or are you just asking me to shack up with you?”

His expression lightened, and he leaned forward to kiss the tip of her nose. “Tell you what. I know this jewelry designer, and she’s amazingly talented. I’m going to commission her to make the perfect engagement ring for you. Something as unique and beautiful as you are. When she’s finished with your ring, I’m going to do the whole romantic proposal. Candlelit dinner, roses, me down on one knee. All the good stuff.” One eyebrow winged upward. “So I guess it’s going to depend on how quickly my jeweler works. In the meantime, I’m asking you and Beru to shack up with me.”

Pure joy filled her soul, and laughter burst from her lips. He couldn’t have come up with a more perfect challenge for her. “I love you, Derek.”

  “Is that a yes?”

“Beru and I would be happy to share space with you.” She waved to encompass her condo. “If you want a straight-up yes on anything, you’re going to need to get down on your knees and ask me nicely.”

“Mmm.” His voice deepened to a honeyed purr. “You know how much I enjoy it when you get all sassy.”

A shiver swept down her limbs, and the desire that never quite dissipated when he was near roared to life. She cupped his cheek. “Show me how much you enjoy it.”

With a laugh, he rolled her beneath him and did just that. And it was perfect. Better than any fantasy she could have ever dreamed up. Sometimes reality was so much sweeter.

Something wet and cold pressed to the bottom of Lorna’s foot, and she bolted upright to see the dark, damp nose of Tyrone’s dog. She laid a hand over her pounding heart. “Diamond.”

The Dalmatian whimpered, her tail wagging.

Lorna’s mind processed the scene slowly. She was in a bed that wasn’t hers with Tyrone’s pet standing at the end. The night before came back to her in one erotic rush. Her body heated just thinking about it.

And then panic slammed into her.

She glanced around and saw Tyrone’s long, dark body sprawled out beside her in bed. Sweat broke out on her forehead, and her heart kicked into high gear. What had she done? She’d slept with her best friend. Oh. Holy. Jesus.

She had to get out of here.

Easing her legs over the side of the bed, she scooped her bra off the floor and tucked it against her chest as she tiptoed out of the room and down the stairs. The muscles in her thighs screamed from the workout she’d given them the night before. And this morning. Tyrone had been relentless, insatiable. Warmth flooded her face as memories assaulted her. Her bare feet slipped on the polished wood floor in the living room.

Diamond followed her downstairs, sniffing at her legs and prancing around her. Lorna chuckled and petted her.

“Shh. Don’t wake up your dad, okay?” The Dalmatian’s tail wagged furiously, making Lorna grin. “You wouldn’t happen to know where the rest of my clothes are, would you?”

Of course not. Diamond was a dog. Lorna rolled her eyes before letting her gaze sweep the room.

She heaved a small sigh of relief when she saw her navy chiffon maxi dress draped over the back of a chair. Following a trail of clothing she recalled shedding in haste on their way to the bedroom, she collected her panties and heels. She found her pantyhose in the kitchen and had to toss them because they were shredded.

The empty wine bottles on the counter mocked her as she passed. Yeah, they really shouldn’t have finished off the shiraz.

Somehow she’d ended up propped on the counter while he tore her stockings off, jerked her panties out of the way, and took her hard and fast. Liquid heat flooded her sex at the memory. God, it had been good. More amazing than she’d even imagined. They’d danced around the chemistry between them for years now. She’d always secretly suspected he avoided doing anything about it because of her weight. That thought hurt, but it wasn’t his fault she was too big to ever be really attractive. He could want her as a friend, but a man as good looking and wonderful as Ty didn’t have to settle for the fat girl. She was twice the size of his last girlfriend. And Sherona had been nasty about rubbing that fact in, too.

Suddenly self-conscious about standing nude in Tyrone’s kitchen, she grabbed her purse and scurried to the downstairs half-bath. She winced when she saw her reflection. Overly generous curves showed in the floor-length mirror mounted to the wall. She stuffed herself into her clothes to cover up. Thankfully they weren’t too wrinkled.

Digging in her purse, she came up with her compact. The makeup she hadn’t managed to sweat off had run down her cheeks. She washed her face and tried to repair the damage. She had an early meeting to get to, so she wouldn’t be able to go home first.

“Ugh.” She had sex hair. It was all over the place. Plucking a hair-tie from her bag, she yanked it back in a tight ponytail.

Diamond whimpered and scratched at the bathroom door, and Lorna opened it to let her in. “Hush, girl.”

Lorna jumped at every little creak of the house, terrified Tyrone would wake up and catch her before she left. Thank God it was Monday and she had work—she could spare them both what would have to be the most awkward morning after of all time. What would she say to him if he did catch her? She didn’t even know. Ask him to forget it even happened? Could she demand that of him when she doubted she could manage it herself? His touch felt branded on her skin.

Her cell phone blared as she stepped out of the bathroom, and she bolted for the back door. Tapping the screen, she picked up the call. “Hello?”

“Oh, thank goodness. Tell me you’re near the jewelry store.” Edith Carraway, wife of John Carraway—owner of Carraway Jewelers—sounded as flustered as she usually did.

Lorna made her voice soothing, letting the demands of her job take over. She could only hope they swept Tyrone out of her thoughts for the day. “I can drive there before I come to the photo shoot. Did you forget something?”

Of course she had. Edith would forget her head if it weren’t firmly attached to her body. This was a little dance they’d done since Lorna had been assigned to the Carraway Jewelers account. As senior advertising executive, she’d found half her job was to hold Edith’s hand. Which explained why such a big account had been handed to her without as much as a whimper from the other execs. They’d known what she hadn’t.

She rolled her eyes. Edith was nice enough, just a flake.

“I forgot three cases of necklaces for the photo shoot.” Edith’s sigh rustled through the phone connection.

There were only five cases being used in today’s shoot. This was going to be a long three days.

Lorna unlocked her car and slid into the driver’s seat. A quick twist of the key and a shift of gears, and she escaped from her night of stupid. Now if she could just keep the erotic scenes from distracting her throughout the day. Or week. Or decade. Her body still tingled for his touch. She drew a deep breath, stomped on her hormones, and spoke to Edith. “I’m on my way. I’ll see you soon.”

  Chapter One

  Lorne Everett

“Are you sure we haven’t taken a wrong turn somewhere?” Jasper asks.

“You’re the one holding the map. You tell me.”

The wiper blades swish across the windscreen, dislodging the large fluffy snowflakes, only for them to cover the glass again seconds later. It’s an endless battle of nature versus machine, and the weather is winning. Any moment now, I fear we’re going to grind to a halt and not g
et going again. The thick snow has reduced our speed to a tentative crawl along these winding country lanes of frozen hedgerows and denuded trees. If we end up having to spend the night in the car, there’s a good chance we’ll both be dead by morning.

“I’m beginning to see why this place was available at the last minute. No one in their right mind would choose to holiday here when the weather’s like this.”

That rather depends on what they’re looking for. The fact the cottage is so remote is exactly the reason I booked it. The fact it’s likely to get cut off shortly after our arrival, an added bonus. Total seclusion is the key to resolving the issues my compatriot so far barely acknowledges, but which need to be dealt with if we’re to adequately portray our upcoming on-screen relationship.

“Right or left at this junction, Jas?”

“I’ve no bloody idea. I can’t make head nor tail of this ruddy thing. It’s why I have Sat Nav.”

Said Sat Nav packed up on us ages ago. There’s no signal in this winter wonderland, and the last discernible sign-post was ten miles back. It’s a good thing there’s no one else on the road, as I’m forced to wait while Jasper attempts to shine the torch app on his phone at the oversized Ordnance Survey map.

“We’re here.” I jab my finger at the end of a barely visible lane. “It looks as if it’s a left, and then the property should be another couple of miles down the road.” It still takes us another fifteen minutes of white-knuckle crawling to arrive. The final lane is almost unnavigable. We make it by sheer luck, though I don’t so much park up when we arrive as plough into a snowdrift that already has another vehicle in its clutches. Looks as if the only way we’re leaving is if the snow melts or after we’ve done a heck of a lot of backbreaking shovelling.
