The Throne of Fear: The Romano's

  The governor stares at me with contempt and snarls, “Over my dead body, I’ll never allow it.”

  “Then it will have to be—over your dead body.”

  “What the fuck, do you know who I am, you’ll never get away with it?”

  Lorenzo snarls, “You think, for your information we have already gotten away with it, the question that remains, is how painful we can make it.”

  The moment the penny drops and the governor realizes his fate, is one I will always treasure, as he stares at us with horror.

  “But…”

  “Stand up.”

  I pull him to his feet, still bound, and he stumbles as I pull him toward the paneling that remains hidden. Ivy told me where to find it and I press down on the handle and wrench it open, pushing him inside.

  “What the…”

  My brothers look on with interest, as I push him back hard against the wall in a space that is far too small for him and growl, “Now, maybe you should just take a moment to think about what you’ve done, shall we say for, I don’t know, thirty minutes?”

  The look of horror on his face makes me laugh like a madman as I slam the door so hard, it smashes against his face and naked body. Then I flip the lock and relish the screams from inside the confined dark space. We all sit patiently until the screams subside and he sobs, “Please, there’s no air, I can’t breathe. You can have Ivy, I’ll say nothing, just let me go.”

  I laugh softly. “Not an option, Governor, it never was. You see, some crimes are unforgivable. We may have forgiven you for murdering our father. To be honest, you did us a favor there. It may have been fun watching you explain the video we are leaking to the internet of you bound and whipped by a whore. I almost wish we could relish your fall from power and watch you squirm as a jury determines how long to send you to prison for, after all, murder is a one-way ticket to prison. But I can’t forgive you for making a young girl’s life a living hell. So, this is for Ivy, you fucking bastard. Just think on how she felt when you forced her inside the place you will end your life. Just think how scared she was when the two people who should have protected her caused her the most fear. Think about our father and know you are no better than him and say hi to the devil when you meet him in hell.”

  The governor screams so hard I’m keen to leave the room and one by one, we file out and slam the door behind us. Skylar leaves with the three of us, leaving Lorenzo to engineer the explosion that will level this house to the ground with the governor trapped inside.

  Skylar is prepared to give evidence of a sex game that went badly wrong and the Governor’s reputation will be destroyed along with his life, leaving his loving wife to deal with the fallout.

  Once we are in the van and heading out of the gates, Lorenzo sets the code that will blow this house sky high. Ryder has assured us that the subsequent investigation will be taken care of and it will all be explained as a devastating accident. Mrs. Thompson won’t receive a penny from the insurance because the building was paid for with tax payers’ money and was the official residence for the governor of the State. The only property they own is a small apartment in the center of town and any money they have banked has been mysteriously gambled away by her husband and now resides in a bank account in Switzerland in Ivy’s name. Once again, I’m impressed with the way Lorenzo’s club operates. Nothing is left to chance, and the wicked are punished way better than any court would. I’m almost tempted to join up myself because it’s the sweetest feeling in the world, revenge without repercussion. No wonder he loves it so much.

  Chapter 39

  Ivy

  I still can’t believe what happened yesterday. Romeo and I are sitting up in bed watching the breaking news, and I think I’m numb. When the men returned, they were in high spirts. Far from dealing with the burden of their business as I expected, they almost seemed as if a huge burden had left them. It was interesting to meet their older brother, who took my breath away. He was so different to them, yet so alike in other ways. I am looking forward to meeting his wife and child who he was keen to get back to.

  The rest of us spent the evening like any other family. I helped Isabella and Riley cook our meal as nonna had already left for Vegas. Luca ran around our feet and the men laughed over beers and shared an easy familiarity.

  It felt so good to be part of something so normal among a family that is anything but.

  Then, when the others headed off to bed, Romeo told me what had happened. I think he was concerned for me, after all they are - were still my parents and yet I felt nothing. If I felt anything it was relief that I would never see him again, and I could tell that Romeo was nervous at my reaction.

  Instead, I took his hand and took him to bed to thank him in the only way I know how. He is my world - my future and I can’t grieve for a past that gives me nightmares.

  Romeo has his arm around me and I watch the tv with my head against his shoulder as the newscaster delivers a shocking piece of news.

  Following the devastating news yesterday that Governor Thompson was killed in an explosion at the governor’s mansion, we can reveal that he was about to be exposed in a sex scandal. Reports of an orgy at his mansion were received yesterday by a reliable source with photographic evidence to back it up. It appears that the governor enjoyed sexual extremes and one of them went badly wrong when he was left locked naked in a cupboard when the explosion hit. Images of what happened before are all over the internet and Mrs. Jackson is reported to be in hiding. To add to the Thompson family misery, in a separate incident, a video of their daughter’s fiancé, Drew Warner, has been leaked, showing him snorting cocaine and indulging in a three in a bed orgy at an undisclosed location. We have also heard he was reported to have spent an evening a few days ago, gambling on the Romano family yacht. Witnesses report that he lost the game and offered his fiancée up as payment. Drew Warner is now under police investigation and has been removed from his position in his party. There has been no sighting of Ivy Thompson, but she is known to be safe and well and keeping a low profile with friends.

  And now for other news…

  “Are you ok, darlin’.”

  Romeo sounds concerned, but I feel numb. “It’s as if I’m watching news of another family, I don’t feel anything, just happiness I won’t ever have to go back. Does that make me a bad person, Romeo?”

  He turns my face to his and holds it gently in two hands. Then he kisses me softly and whispers, “You’re not bad, Ivy, that’s my department. Leave it to the professionals.”

  I’m not sure why, but every time I look at Romeo, I want him. Is this normal, it feels like it is to me? Picturing how different my life could have been if things had gone my parent’s way, makes me shiver a little. Then I shiver for a different reason as Romeo’s kisses deepen and then he says huskily, “Will you marry me, Ivy? Become my wife and the mother to my children. Stay with me forever and keep me sane.”

  “Yes.”

  I don’t hesitate, and I don’t need to say anything else. It will always be yes because Romeo is everything I ever wanted and so much more besides.

  Romeo makes love to me and nothing else matters. Just him, me and our future.

  I feel him enter me, pushing aside any obstacles, any boundaries, and any doubts, and as he fills me completely, I know what happiness feels like. It feels like Romeo Romano and it may have taken us a long time to get to this point, but at least we made it. I can’t wait to be part of this family, part of something so amazing, and provide the next generation. This is a name that will never die, if I have my way at least. A dynasty, a legacy and a promise that their Throne will always have a King, or Queen. Stranger things have happened, after all.
