She had been so worried how her children would react when they finally met Grant and Jake in person. At first, they had been shocked, critical, and hesitant when she told them about her relationship with these men. She understood all the questions and worries they had when she told them she was marrying two men. After a lot of explaining and expressing how happy they made her, they seemed to come to grips with it.
Sara hadn’t realized the men had talked to her sons over the phone, several times over the last weeks, secretly getting to know them and plan this surprise.
She put her arm through Angie’s and walked with her toward the porch. Callie came tearing through the door and squealed. “My brothers are here. My brothers are here.”
Her sons stopped talking with the men to look at the little girl. Sara knew it would be Carter to break the ice. He had always been great with kids. He crouched down and smiled. “You must be Callie, my new sister.”
Callie stood by Jake, taking his hand, and suddenly turned shy, sticking her thumb in her mouth as she looked him over. After a minute, she smiled, took a few steps and threw herself into his arms, knocking him back on his butt. Callie’s squeals and laughter and Carter’s chuckles could be heard over everyone’s.
Grant snorted and took control of the situation, lifting Callie off Carter, giving the young man a hand up. “Who’s hungry?” Grant bellowed.
Everyone cheered and headed into the house. Jake was waiting for Sara when she came through the front door, pulling her into his arms and letting the others pass by. “Are you happy, baby?”
Sara tightened her arms around his waist and breathed in the smell and powerful feel of this man who had become an essential part of her whole world.
She smiled brightly up at him. “I couldn’t be happier. Thank you both so much for this. This will be a day I’ll never forget as long as I live.” She stood on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against his.
Grant stepped in, pulling Sara from him. “I need some of that lovin’, baby.” He grinned as Jake grumbled.
Sara hugged Grant to her. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” She stretched to give him a kiss and sighed when the kiss quickly deepened. They broke apart when someone yelled from the dining room for them to hurry.
Sara stood watching her sons and daughter-in-law getting to know the grandparents and Gina and her husband. She smiled as Callie raced around the room, stopping to give a hug to one of her new brothers before racing away again.
Her eyes roamed slowly, taking in everything she could, wanting to remember everything about this day. Grant held her firmly against his side as he talked with Richard.
It was only when Grant’s father David yelled, “I’m hungry” did everyone find a chair. They started passing the bowls and platters heaping with food around. Sara looked down the table and blinked back the tears that misted her eyes. There wasn’t anything in the world she needed besides the people in this room.
