Maddie put her hand on the side of his face. “After all the hell you and your friends went through because of what he did, you still helped my grandfather.”
“I felt sorry for Samuel, but I didn’t do it for him. I did it for you.” A tear tracked down her face, and he gently wiped it away. “I will do anything, bear anything, for you.” He pressed her palm against his heart. “You own this, Maddie Russell.”
She gave him a tremulous smile. “Then that makes me the richest woman in the world.” Her smile faded. “I’m sorry you won’t ever get the justice you deserve.”
He put his finger against her lip for a second. “I won’t lie to you and say that it wasn’t a bitter pill to swallow, but I’ve had some time to do a lot of soul searching. I realized Adam wouldn’t have wanted me to be so revenge focused that I lost my way.” He’d visited Adam’s grave, and there, he’d finally allowed himself to grieve, to put down the burden he’d carried for years and say goodbye to his friend.
“I just wish that there was something that I could do.”
“There is,” Cole said. “You can love me and never stop.”
“That, Mr. Big, won’t be a problem.”
His heart soared. “Come back to our home. I want to make love to you. Then I want to build a life with you.”
“That sounds perfect.”
Epilogue
Six months had passed since Maddie had moved back in with Cole. She’d welcomed every moment of those weeks like the gift that they were. To think that they’d almost missed out on being together still made chills run up her spine.
She never got tired of the thrill of coming home after work knowing that she and Cole would have the evening together. He’d handed her the reins of the former Russell hotel, and within three months, she’d turned it around, restored the place to its glory days, and now it was making a steady profit again.
Her parents’ divorce had become final, and Maddie was enjoying a new, better relationship with her mother. Much to her father’s dismay, he’d had to restore everything he’d weaseled away from her grandfather.
She walked into the house a little later than she normally did, but she’d stayed longer at work to take care of a problem. It was already evening, and Cole had suggested that they go out tonight. She’d changed into a dress and redid her makeup before she’d left work.
“Cole?” She walked into the living room and stopped.
Not Cole, but her sister waited in the middle of the room.
“What are you doing here?” she asked as she hugged her.
“I needed to give you this,” Dani said with a smile as she offered up an envelope.
Maddie opened it. Walk outside to the man waiting to bring you to me.
“What is this?”
“Let’s go see.”
They climbed into the back of a limousine to find a CD with the words Play me written across it.
Dani pulled a portable CD player from her purse and passed it over.
Maddie inserted it and put the headphones on. Cole’s deep voice spoke in her ear. You are…beautiful. Amazing. Sexy. Compassionate. Patient. Adventurous. Fun. Captivating. Loved. Deeply. Passionately. Forever.
By the time the car stopped, Maddie was openly crying. She dabbed her eyes with a tissue. “What’s going on?”
Dani handed her another envelope. “Get out and open it then.”
Maddie stepped out of the car and opened the envelope. Come to me in front of the Fountain, the words said. She looked up and then realized where she was. Grant Park. In the evenings, the Buckingham Fountain would change light colors as the water continually spewed. She and Cole had walked through the park two weeks ago, and she’d remarked how she’d loved the place.
She made her way toward the water, and as she neared the bricks where tourists would walk around the fountain, she noticed a large group of people standing together. As soon as she looked at them, they began to sing one of her favorite love songs. The words floated out across the air, haunting the night with the beautiful lyrics.
Cole, dressed in a tuxedo, was waiting for her.
She stopped walking and covered her mouth with her hand, unable to move or speak.
He came to meet her and gently pulled her hand away from her mouth. “Maddie Russell, the most amazing woman in the world.” He patted his chest. “Cole Mitchell, hopefully the luckiest man in the world.” He lowered himself to one knee and opened a ring box. “I love you. Will you marry me?”
Maddie could only cry and nod. Cole rose and slipped the ring on her finger. She threw her arms around him, feeling so full of happiness that surely she was in danger of bursting from it.
He wiped her tears away. “I want to give you everything you could ever want. Everything you ever dreamed of.”
“You are what I want and what I dream of. I just want to be with you,” she said in a voice that wobbled.
“And I with you and nothing else matters,” Cole said.
Maddie couldn’t agree more as he bent his head and kissed her.
