“Looking good lads,” Ron said to the boys.

Robert waved to him, whilst passing Jack a near empty tin of paint.

“Here you go our Jack,” he said, “that’s the last bit painted.”

“Well done lads,” Albert said approaching them, patting each of them in turn upon their shoulders.

They took a few steps back to admire their handiwork, Ron walking across to join them.

They stood in front of a freshly painted, sky blue sailing boat.

It stood proudly in the yard of Archie’s house.

“We’ll wait until the paint dries, then I’ll sort out getting in on the back of the wagon,” Ron said.

“When are the new people moving in,” Robert asked.

“Oh, not for a few weeks son, “Albert replied, “there’s no rush.”

“I’ll get Arne to give us a hand, when we load her to take her to the Marina,” Ron said.

“He’s that strong, he could lift it by himself!” Daniel exclaimed.

“Aye son,” Ron said smiling, “he probably could, knowing him.”

“Just one more thing to do, then it’s done,” Albert said.

“That’s right, did Stumpy drop them off?” Ron asked.

“He did that Ron,” replied Albert, “made a really good job of them too. That lad’s got some talent. Pass me that bag will you Frank, please?”

Frank fetched a large cloth bag from nearby and handed it to him.

“You know, they say it’s supposed to be unlucky changing a boat’s name,” Ron exclaimed.

“I know,” Albert replied, retrieving two long pieces of wood from the bag, “but I know Archie would approve.”

Walking to the front of the boat, he carefully positioned one of the pieces of wood against it.

“Hammer some nails in please Ron,” he asked, “but be careful not to hit my fingers.”

“Oh, I will be,” Ron replied chortling, “I’ve did that enough times myself, so I’ll be careful.”

Ten minutes later, they stood back from the boat.

“What do you think lads,” Albert asked, “do you think Archie would like it?”

  “Yes!” Daniel exclaimed.

“Great!” Jack and Frank replied in unison.

“Archie would be so proud,” Robert said, placing his hand upon Daniels shoulder, reading the name on the side of the boat.

  “Comet.”

  The End

  Authors Notes

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, for taking the time to read my words.

Comet is a trip down memory lane for me in regard my childhood in Liverpool. I am not old enough to have been around during the immediate aftermath of the war, I am a sixties child after all! But I do have fond memories of playing outside and watching the Rag and Bone man coming down our street plying his trade.

My original dream was always to be a writer or, as in Robert’s case, it was to be a policeman. My journey through life unfortunately, was not that of one of the thousands of people who serve in a police force we should all be proud of.

But, my journey has placed me in the position, where I can finally put pen to paper.

I thank my beautiful parents with all my heart, for allowing me to grow up in that wonderful childhood that long-ago place of dreams, and imagination.

I also want to take the chance to say thank you to the following who kept me sane whilst I was living in the world of Comet: Lee Evans, Dara O’Briain, Dave Allen, Sarah Millican and all of those other ‘stand ups’ for giving me truly laugh out loud moments through the head phones; Deacon Blue for providing the musical interludes; to my social media posse for providing me with a lifeline, giving me strength through your friendship, keeping me breathing and the inspiring words keeping me going and kept my dream alive.

But most all of all to you dear reader. If it was not for you, the words of my stories would remain in my mind and dreams, you are the important ones, the readers. You are the people, who make it all worthwhile.

Thank you, thank you so much.

See you in the next story
