Nicaragua for Nomads

The Sunday Funday game should be an accumulation of your efforts gaming in San Juan del Sur. You should have met a number of people surfing, eating and partying in the days leading up to Sunday Funday. Just have fun while you’re at the pools and enjoy yourself. You’ll be able to hit on just about whoever you want at Sunday Funday. Everyone is in a great mood. The only game tip you’ll need is to make sure you have a chick lined up before you get to the final party. If you’ve got nothing by then, you’ll be struggling to pull. Every guy I know that got laid had a chick lined up by the end of the second pool party.

  San Juan del Sur Overall

San Juan del Sur was by far my favorite backpacker locale I visited in Central America. The place was cheap, fun and beautiful. I’d highly recommend anyone traveling through Nicaragua, or Central America to take a week and surf in San Juan. Don’t forget to check out Sunday Funday as well!

I was in San Juan del Sur during a mild time. High season in San Juan is supposed to be crazy. Mid-December to early February is high season.

  Leon

  Positives of Leon

Volcano Boarding: The only reason to come to Leon (unless you’re taking Spanish lessons) is to go volcano boarding. The Big Foot Hostel runs the fastest volcano boarding operation in town. If you enjoy adventurous tourist activities, this is an absolute must. One of my favorite activities I did in all my travels.

Close To The Beach: Leon is only 20 minutes away from the beach. You can take day trips to the beach or stay at a hostel on the beach for pennies on the dollar. I’m talking $3 - 4 dorms and $12 for privates. This hostel is pretty cool as well and only 15 minutes from Leon.

Safe & Beautiful City: Leon is a pretty safe place in the center, where you’ll spend all your time. The city is also well kept and somewhat charming. If you’ve been to Europe, you may not be a big fan. However, after living in Managua for a while – I found the colonial buildings of Leon to be quite beautiful.

  Negatives of Leon

Local Women: This may be the only city in Nicaragua where the local women don’t fancy gringos much. The town used to be filled with cases of real rape and the women here are very cautious. Also, the town has become invested with gringos as of late.

Nightlife: The nightlife here was just average. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. The only real benefit was the $0.40 beers. You really can’t beat that pricing at a “club”, at least I’m not sure where you can.

  Places to Stay

I stayed at the Big Foot Hostel. It was average. The place has a number of travelers coming in and out, but it’s nothing special in my eyes. The rooms are fairly garbage. The bar is overpriced. Breakfast isn’t included. However, the location is good and you’ll be around a number of other travelers.

I also met some people staying at the hotel across the street. They were quite fond of the place.

The Surfing Turtle Lodge in Leon is also decent, but compared to the Big Foot Hostel, the place is dead.

  Game in Leon

I wouldn’t expect to get laid in Leon unless you’re staying for a while. I only stayed for 48 hours, so I wasn’t particularly concerned. The local women in Leon were not particularly impressive either.

You can use Tinder to see if any girls are on the app. I found there were a few, but not a ton. I wouldn’t worry about any other online dating sites while in Leon.

On a Thursday night there’s a good party at Big Foot Hostel. Fridays and Saturdays are good at Piratas.

Day game around the old cathedral could be a good option.

The best way to game is to meet girls that go volcano boarding with you. You’ll end up taking to everyone you go with. You spend almost five hours together, so unless you’re a mute you’ll meet people. Also, you get a free beer and a free mojito after volcano boarding with Big Foot. The adrenaline and alcohol combine to put people in a pretty good mood. Sadly, I didn’t have any prospects in my group out of the 15 or so girls. However, this is the best way to meet a girl in Leon. Invite her to grab dinner with your group and then go out and get wasted with her later that evening.

  Leon Overall

Leon is ok. I wasn’t too impressed with the city, but it’s not a bad place to chill out for a bit. You can get incredibly cheap Spanish lessons in Leon, but unless you’re studying here I wouldn’t spend more than 3-5 days. The town is a must to check out while in Nicaragua just for the volcano boarding.

  Granada

I wish I had spent more time in Granada than I did. Other than Volcano boarding, I found the city to be a vast improvement over Leon in every imaginable way. I was only in Granada for a few hours, so I can’t dive too deep into the best parts of the city to stay, nightlife, etc.

However, I can tell you that I met a few Canadian guys that cleaned up in Granada during a five-day stay. They claimed to have banged four chicks between the three of them during their time here (two locals, two backpackers). They had a decent game, so I didn’t doubt it.

Also, Granada has a better set up for nightlife than Leon. Locals in Managua would often go to Granada during the weekends to party. I thought the nightlife in Managua was good, but they claimed Granada was better.

The nightlife centers around Calle Calzada and the town center by the lake. Calle Calzada is said to have more bars and restaurants, while the area by the lake has a few clubs that should be decent on the weekend.

The Canucks said Tinder was pretty good in Granada as well. Thus, I’d say Granada is a much better colonial town for a playboy in Nicaragua than Leon.

Lastly, I recommend you check out studying Spanish lessons in Granada. Lesson can be had for around $8 an hour. You can’t beat private lessons for $8 an hour. Many backpackers take a week and study 20 hours of Spanish in Granada. It’s similar to Antigua, Guatemala in this respect.

  Isla de Ometepe

Some people love Isla de Ometepe. Some people hate the spot. I never went. I was considering going, but everyone that loved the island in the lake were of the “smelly, hippy, stoned backpacker” variety. That’s not my scene.

So I didn’t hit it up. I also don’t imagine the place is good for picking up chicks. Ometepe is not known for its nightlife and you’re not going to find good-looking Nicaraguan girls here.

I’d imagine the only way you’re getting laid here is by sheer luck. A lone girl on Tinder or maybe a group of girls celebrating a birthday one night here, and thus boozing hard, may give you a chance, but again, sheer luck. You may find some backpacker chicks here, but with the lack of nightlife, you may struggle to isolate and escalate.

However, you should visit Ometepe if you’re backpacking Nicaragua. Location independent types may not be fond of the place, but it’s a must for those who enjoy nature and want to see the sites on the islands. The two volcanoes are said to be incredible. I caught a brief glimpse of them traveling from San Juan del Sur to Managua and they were impressive.

Most backpackers choose to stay in the towns of Santo Domingo or Santa Cruz on the island. Backpacking types rarely stays in the main ferry town, Moyogalpa.

  My Experience in Nicaragua

I absolutely loved Nicaragua. The people are friendly. The good life is cheaper. The beaches are beautiful. The surf is good. I really had no complaints, even with the capital being somewhat of a shithole. Sure, the girls could have been a little cuter, but I didn’t have an issue navigating this concern.

In Managua, I lived cheaply in a hotel and banged 7 chicks in my 23 days. The quality was fairly decent. Some of the girls were average, but you can touch the top quality girls (top quality being “8’s” there) in Managua simply due to being foreign. There is also a small modeling scene that is not too tough to get into and bed a few of these hot girls.

Also, I really enjoyed my time in San Juan. I spent a week in San Juan traveling alone and practicing my surfing. I met some really cool people, who I surfed with all week and had a great time. I went out 3 nights and was able to isolate two girls, but I only closed one. Still, I wa
s happy with one new flag for the week because I really enjoyed my time here.

  Online Dating Sites – Nicaragua

In Nicaragua, I recommend you use:

  Tinder

  OkCupid

  Latin American Cupid

In the capital, you can have success on any one of these sites. However, you shouldn’t expect to use online dating while in backpacking areas, sans Granada. Give Tinder a shot while in the colonial cities or at the beach, but don’t expect much.

Tinder is going to be your best bet in Managua. OkCupid just doesn’t have many options. Latin American Cupid girls were not that keen to meet me. Badoo is full of trannies. Plenty of Fish does not operate in Nicaragua.

  Recommended Itinerary – Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a country you could spend a significant amount of time in. While 2-4 weeks are sufficient for a quick backpacking trip, you could spend 2-3 months living in the capital on the cheap, and have a great time.

Managua, San Juan del Sur and Leon have been detailed in this guide. Granada and Isla de Ometepe were also discussed in detail. However, Nicaragua offers much more than these few cities.

Other great cites and places in Nicaragua include:

Corn Islands – Kite surfing and beauty on the cheap, and in the Caribbean.

Volcan Masaya– Beautiful volcano a short drive outside the capital, Managua. Check out the market and the central square downtown on a day trip.

Poneloya – Great beach outside Leon. Surf can be decent here some times during the year.

  Recommended Time in Each Place

  Managua:

  One week to two months.

If you’re backpacking around, I suggest you spend a week in Managua. I’d stay from a Thursday to the following one. Go out Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Then run dates from your night game and online dating efforts during the week. You’ll get the flag.

If you’re a location independent type, you can easily spend a month or two in Managua. Catch up on work during the day, and then head out at night. You’ll rack up some notches and save money.

  San Juan del Sur:

  Five days to one month.

You’d do yourself a disservice by not spending a decent chunk of time in San Juan while in Nicaragua. The worst thing you could do here is learn to surf, party a bit and live on the cheap.

If you’re backpacking around, spend 5 days here. Make sure one of them is a Sunday. You don’t want to miss Sunday Funday. I spent a week here, but I could have easily stayed a month. The party, surf and pricing can be somewhat addicting.

  Leon:

  Two days to one week.

I’m not a huge fan of Leon, but volcano boarding makes the town a must to check out for at least a couple days. The nightlife is marginal, but incredibly cheap. Only stay a week if you’re taking Spanish lessons. However, I’d recommend taking those in Granada over Leon.

  Granada:

  Three days to one week.

Granada deserves a little more time than Leon, but I wouldn’t stay too long. Check out the nightlife and chill out in the colonial city during the day. Only stay a week if you’re taking cheap Spanish lessons for 20 or so hours.

  Isla de Ometepe:

  Two days to four days.

If you’re backpacking around Nicaragua, take a couple days on Isla de Ometepe. Enjoy the beauty of the volcanoes and the nature, as you recharge your batteries after partying in San Juan, Granada or Managua. Location independent travelers may want to skip Isla de Ometepe.
