“I don't know much about courage, Nina. If I did, I'd have waited to ask you to marry me. I'd have taken you out to dinner and danced until three. We'd have sat by the river and talked about all the years we shared the same office but not the same life.”
He shook his head, traced a long curl with the tip of his finger and whispered, “I rushed because you're everything I want. I was afraid to give you time to think, because I didn't want you to realize that I need you a hell of a lot more than you need me.”
If he thought the truth might disappoint or scare her, he was wrong. “Ask me again, David,” she said in a whisper that was all she seemed able to manage. “Ask me again to get married and be your family.”
Looking at her with all the solemnity and all the purpose of a man who had found his calling in life, he said, “Marry me. Marry me now or marry me later. I'm not afraid to wait, because you know what I've realized? Becoming a family is a serious business. And I'm going to devote the rest of my life to it.”
This time she initiated the kiss. Its promise was strong and sure.
“I think I'd like another baby,” she murmured when they broke apart, grinning as David's brows shot up. “Your baby.” He was speechless. “What are you thinking?”
“I think we should have two.”
Arching back, Nina laughed, a joyful, worry-free sound.
David's gaze fell on the single wick that remained unlit. Leaning to his left, he raised the candle, tipping it toward one whose flame already burned bright.
Eyes shining, Nina placed her hand atop his, and they lit the last candle together.
