The leader continued to do all the talking and started to hit the girls on their heads and shoulders with his black jack. The boat came alive again with the screams and cries from the women in pain and the men’s protests. Then he turned his attention on me and calmly stood at my feet like some menacing gargoyle asking again about the money.

I repeated that he had all the money. He told me that each time he asked and I continued to lie, that he was going to hurt somebody. With that, he pulled his silenced 9mm from its holster and shot me in the leg. Everyone screamed as I writhed in pain, and then he started on the other men. He beat the men with his sap until they were black and blue and bloody from the top of their heads to their belts and all had teeth missing.

I screamed at the leader at this point that if he did not stop the bleeding in my leg I would black out and die. He had one of his men attempt to stop the bleeding, and he was unsuccessful as he did not know what he was doing. I told him I did not want to bleed to death while he figures it out and that he should let me take care of it. The leader told him to cut me loose and let me stop the bleeding myself. He did, and I needed to stand up to do this. While one of his men assisted me to stand, the leader kept his gun trained on me. Bob saw what I was doing and said to me “Mack, if you have any money hidden give it to them.”

As they turned to look at him, I pulled the gun out of the man’s hand and hit him across the face with it, and as the leader turned to face me, I shot him first in the chest, then in the jaw. He dropped his gun at that point and fell to the floor.

I felt two bullets hit my abdomen and with a bloody hand pulled the trigger several times at him until it hit an empty chamber, wondering as my legs buckled, if this was my last act…?

  epilogue

It was Mack’s last act. After the police investigation and the funeral were over, Bob and Karen repaired the boat and took the Bayliner and its “hidden treasure” to parts unknown. They told everyone they were going to El Paso to throw the treasure seekers off their trail, as Bob knew that the search for the millions would never end…
