Fuck. I’d never given a thought to the future. My history of parenthood was scarred by my nightmare marriage. Did I want to go through it all again at the age of forty-eight?

Haley noted my reaction. “And that’s why I’m betraying her confidence and giving you a heads up.” She said. “Because I don’t want you breaking her heart. She deserves the love of a good man and so much more.”

“Thank you, Haley.” I replied. “I understand it has put you in a difficult position, giving me that information. You can bet I’ll think things through.”

“I think you left it so late with Alex, you’ve kinda been placed in an ‘all in’ situation.” Haley shrugged her shoulders. “And it could be a whole lotta fun if you get the stick from up your butt and start living your life by the seat of your pants.”

I sighed. “Know anywhere that does personality transplants?”

Once I left Haley, I returned to the office and asked Alex to screen my calls and for me not to be disturbed. I blamed it all on the bogus business meeting and told her I was getting prepared. I even asked her to spend the afternoon compiling a list of King’s available properties that we could show Mr. Saunders. Should I be concerned that I was becoming so adept at lying?

I swung my chair around, looking at the view of Manhattan, while I stroked my chin. I imagined Alex carrying an unknown man’s child inside her body and my own insides churned, acid rising in my throat. Over my dead body was that happening. Then I allowed myself to picture her full with my child, heavily pregnant, her face glowing. The possessive feeling in me rose like a wave and I had to grip the arms of my chair to stop myself crashing through the door of my office, storming over to Alex’s desk, locking the outer office door and taking her over her desk.

Christ, my dick was straining against my pants. ‘Calm the fuck down’, I told my mind and body. I’d locked my door and the blind across the glass was down. I swiveled round to face my desk and opened a private browser window where I typed in short blonde hair and it brought up a hot woman, not as hot as Alex but someone who my mind could picture was her. Sitting back in my seat, I watched as the man stroked his hand down the woman’s back and then trailed his hand up before he grabbed the back of her neck and guided her mouth toward his cock. I loosened my pants and freed my own cock from my boxer briefs before holding my length firmly in my hand. As the woman in the clip began bobbing her head up and down on the man’s cock I began to fist my own. My eyes closed as I pictured the real Alex who was just the other side of the door. I banged my desk in frustration that I was in my office jerking off when really I wanted to be balls deep inside Alex, sunk within her warm depths. I could feel the telltale pull in my balls that my climax was coming, and I fisted myself for all I was worth.

  “Fuck, Alex.” I groaned.

As I came into my hand I rushed through into my private bathroom, banging the stall door. I grabbed some tissue paper while my heart rate—that currently thudded and strained like I was about to have a stroke—combined with my rapid breathing, making me feel a little woozy. Gently, I sat for a moment and once recovered I cleaned up and dashed out of the office, making Alex jump.

“I’ll be back shortly.” I announced offering no further explanation.”

  Alex flushed, “Okay, Sir.”

Then I was out of the door, escaping what had just happened and feeling in firm need of a scotch.

  Chapter 3

  Alex

I’d been busy compiling the portfolio for this evening’s meeting when the light on the intercom had flashed. I pressed the button at my end, waiting to hear Eli’s voice.

What I’d heard instead had been confusing. There was a strange noise, kind of like a slapping sound and strange moans. I couldn’t place it and for a moment I’d wondered if Eli was having some kind of fit. I’d just been about to dash out of my chair to go to his aid when he groaned the words, “Fuck, Alex,” and I realized what I was hearing were the sounds of a man jerking off.

My face went bright red. Oh my God.

I looked at the intercom confused. He said nothing else, and I heard his chair squeak and a door bang. I quickly dropped the intercom connection on my side. He must have done that by accident. Surely he’d not meant for me to hear him?

I stared at his office door not knowing what to do next. Had he really been pleasuring himself in the office? Had he definitely called out my name? There had to be another explanation. I was obviously mistaken. Fuck, maybe he was having a heart attack, was trying to buzz me and was now dying in the bathroom after I’d failed to respond to his ‘Fuck, Alex’ and subsequent groan. I was about to rise from my seat to go rescue my boss when his office door banged making me jump and he bolted from the office. He had a flushed face and no sign of ill health.

I went through to his office where the intercom light still flashed. He’d been so caught up in what he was doing he’d not noticed he’d pressed it.

My mind whirled with all this new information. Had he meant me? Had he fantasized about me while he jerked off? Did he find me attractive? And what the hell did I do about it?

I fixed myself a glass of water as my mind buzzed with crazy thoughts. God, I had to go to dinner with him tonight. Maybe I should fake a headache and let him do the meeting alone?

The phone rang derailing my thoughts.

  “King’s Enterprises, Alexandr-”

  “It’s me, Haley.”

“Oh hi, Haley, he’s not around at the moment.”

“Fantastic. I don’t want to talk to him, I want to talk to you. You got a minute?”

My forehead creased. “Is the baby alright?”

“Yes, fine. Now take a seat, we need to talk.”

This day was becoming stranger by the second. I did as asked although I did wonder how she’d know if I’d done as instructed.

“Okay, now I’m going to tell you something that I’m not supposed to. Although I was never asked to keep a confidence about it so I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong.”

“For God’s sake, Haley. What is it?”

“Eli has the hots for you. Fact.”

I closed my eyes. Shit. It was true and I might have really heard him pleasuring himself while thinking of me? My heart started to thump, and I felt a little shaky.

  “You still there?”

“Yes, but, how do you know this? Did he tell you?”

“Yes. Apparently he lost a bet where he had to ask you out.”

At that point a crushing sense of disappointment flooded through me. Oh, he didn’t want me, it was just a bit of fun, at my expense.

“No, don’t start with your low self-esteem crap. He’s been wanting to ask you out for years. You hear that? Years. Too damn scared to ruin everything. Sound familiar? Anyway, he should have asked you already, but he’s too damn chicken shit so he’s faked a business dinner. There’s gonna be a no show tonight from the English dude.”

I sighed in relief. “Good, because whoever he got to call sounded crazy.”

There was a laugh from the other end of the phone. “Yeah, a crazy boss called Elias King who can’t do a very good impersonation of a British dude.”

  “No!” I exclaimed.

“Was Eli out when the client called?”

I thought back. “Oh my God, that’s when he popped out being all mysterious and I thought he might be meeting another woman.”

“Well, newsflash. He’s made a fake date to take you out without actually asking you on a date because he wants to see how you get on. Which in Eli’s world means he’s still too chicken shit to ask. Now just make sure you look sensational tonight and I don’t know, get him drunk or something. And for heaven’s sake do not tell him that I told you everything.”

My mind was exploding over the events of the last fifteen minutes. I felt like I needed to lie down. It was like everything I’d thought before had just changed, my world tilted on its axis. Me and Eli might actually become a thing. Holy fuck!

  “I won’t say a word, an
d I’m going to make sure I enjoy every minute of this business meeting.” I said. We chatted a little more and then I ended the call promising to tell her everything.

About ten minutes later the phone rang again, and I answered, a familiar British sounding voice coming down the line.

“Alexandra? Mr. Saunders here. Got to cancel by golly. Pesky headache. Tell the old boy I’m sorry and I’ll rearrange. Okay. Tata for now.”

The call ended abruptly. The bastard had cancelled. Haley was right. He was a chicken shit. I got up to make myself a coffee, kicking the trashcan over on my way past. “Fucking jerk.” I couldn’t take any more of this. He was probably doing serious damage to my ovaries and my heart. Something had to change.

I’d tidied up the trashcan debris and composed myself by the time Eli returned from his outing.

“Any messages?” He asked me, only giving my face a cursory glance.

I rattled off a few messages that had come in for him, leaving out any mention of a Terry Saunders.

“Is that all? Nothing else you’ve forgotten?”

I pretended to look at my jotter. “No, Sir. No other messages at all.”

  “Oh, right. Okay then.”

Now what was he going to do?

An hour later Eli popped out again and made another call as Mr. Saunders, asking me if I’d passed the message on. “Yes, Mr. Saunders I passed it on straight away.” I replied.

But when Eli returned I once again told him there were no messages.

In the end in desperation Eli walked in to tell me Mr. Saunders had called him direct.

“Oh, I never heard your phone ring.” I said sweetly.

“Yeah, the ringers on low volume.” He said. “Anyway, you might want to cancel the reservation now. Mr. Saunders isn’t coming.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think so.”

  Eli’s jaw dropped. “Excuse me?”

I folded my arms across my chest. “I’m not cancelling the reservation. I cancelled my own arrangements to make this dinner and so we shall still have a business meeting. We can talk about my future prospects as your PA or something. I’ve looked forward to eating at this restaurant for a long time so I’m still going. Either you can come with me or I’ll get myself a date and bill it all to your expense account.”

“Oh, ah,” Eli stood scratching his chin stubble, a sure sign of his nerves. “Okay, well, business dinner it is. You work hard and deserve a nice treat.” He said.

“Great. Well if it’s okay with you, I’m going to finish early today, go home and change.” I announced, grabbing my purse from the shelf behind me.

“Sure. I’ll see you there then at eight.” He replied.

I smiled. “You sure will.” I told him and walked out of the office.

  Chapter 4

  Eli

  What the hell just happened?

All I could assume was that I’d taken advantage of her good nature one too many times. Yes. It made sense that asking her to work late and then cancelling at the last minute would make her pissed. Especially, if she’d been looking forward to going to the restaurant. Yes, now I could understand volcano o’clock.

It was so unlike Alex though. Dare I say it? Maybe it was that time of the month too? I decided to pick up a bouquet of flowers to take to the restaurant as way of an apology. It was something you’d do on a date as well.

I arrived at the restaurant at a quarter to eight so that I’d hopefully be there and settled before Alex’s arrival. Jesus, I was so goddamn nervous. I’d spent a half hour this evening making a list of business issues I could discuss so that I didn’t freeze up. By the time it got to ten minutes past eight I was sweating like a pig and had to remove my jacket and loosen my tie. So much for looking smart this evening. I’d also already downed three scotches. Christ, I’d better calm the fuck down as it was hardly professional to slur your words at your assistant.

And then she was brought to the table and I swear my heart stopped beating. Her short blonde hair was tousled slightly, her face painted to perfection with cosmetics that made her look like a supermodel and she was wearing a short silver slip dress. Yes – a short dress. A very short dress. Now I’m a man but I’d do my best to describe it to you. Basically there was little of it. Thin straps and material that hung loosely on her body but at the same time accentuated those pert breasts. It skimmed her hips and rested just above her knees. My cock prevented me from doing the gentlemanly thing and standing to greet her and to pull out her chair as she’d have had something to hang her coat on if I’d have stood up. Instead I had to scoot myself further under the table, so she couldn’t see my boner.

Worst of all my mouth wouldn’t work as my head was all kinds of confused.

This isn’t work attire - is she going on a date afterwards?

I’ll fucking kill anyone who goes near her.

Shall I give her my jacket because I’ve already seen one guy check her out.

I swear to God I wasn’t this pathetic when I was a teenager and a virgin. Business Alex I could cope with. This Alex, sexsational Alex—yes that’s the word I was going for—well, I was doomed to hell. In fact, at that moment a tiny part of me hoped for a minor heart scare so I could have escaped via 911 and not had to proceed.

Alex ordered a drink, and I got through the next minute by pointing at my empty scotch glass and nodding when the waitress asked if I wanted another. I put my fingers up to say two and secured an order for a double. The waitress took away the empty glasses.

“Are you okay, Eli?” Alex asked me. “You seem to be drinking a lot. Has something happened?” Her face was creased in concern.

“Err, Mr. Saunders managed to pop in after all. We met at seven for a quick drink and business chat, so, that’s why there are all the empty glasses.”

Alex sat back in her chair and crossed one leg over the other. My eyes headed straight for the juncture of her thighs and I caught a glimpse of silver silk panties. Fuck.

“Can we cut the bullshit here, Eli?”

  “Excuse me?” My eyes widened.

“Let’s just get things clear and in the open right now. There has never been a Mr. Terry Saunders. You set this up, so that we were here alone though you then wimped out and tried to cancel. Now, you can either treat this like the date it is and stop acting like a douche, or you can tell me you’re not interested and I’ll go home. You’ve one chance, Eli. We’ve been dancing around each other for years. It ends tonight one way or another. So, what’s it to be?

Wow. The woman I’d fantasized over for years had called me out on it. Cards were on the table. She was into me. Oh my fucking God was this actually happening?

“Would you like to go out to dinner with me, Alex?” I finally croaked out.

“Yes, I would. I’d like to do a lot more than dinner, Eli, truth be told.”

  Fuck dinner.

“Takeout at mine once we’ve made ourselves hungry?” I ventured, “or we can enjoy a nice meal. You tell me what you want, Alex, because I’m yours.”

“Take me to yours.” She demanded. “I’ve waited long enough.”

Without hesitation I threw hundreds of dollars onto the table and steered Alex out to my waiting driver, my hand in the small of her back. The flowers forgotten and abandoned at the side of my chair. I couldn’t believe I had my hand on her, feeling the warmth of her skin through the slim material. I opened the car door for her and we climbed inside where I asked the driver to put the privacy screen up and then we launched at each other. Lips crushing lips. My hand holding the back of her head, her arms fastened around my neck. My tongue plunged inside her eager mouth.

  This. Was. Really. Happening.

Then my body remembered what it was like to touch someone you were head over heels for. Something that hadn’t happened since I’d fallen in love with my ex-wife. I’d had random hook-ups since, even dated some women for a few months, but nothing serious. My relationship with Katrina had made me build walls around myself. Walls that Ale
x, as I had gotten to know her more, had started to bring down. And now they were rubble lying around her feet.

The Eli of old was gone, taking the opportunity presented before him - Alex.

We made out all the way to my brownstone and then I carried her up the steps, only stopping to unlock my door. My hands had skirted her ass as I’d carried her and I couldn’t wait to get her inside my bedroom. I took hold of her hand and pulled her up the stairs behind me and then down the corridor into my room. I flicked a small lamp on and turned. Alex stood in the doorway, her face a picture of vulnerability as she bit her lip. There was no room for doubt here.

“Alex. I want you in my bed. I want to fuck you all night long and I need to tell you now that once that happens, you're mine. You understand? I’ve not come this far to lose you.”

She nodded, and I slowly walked over to her. The tables had turned. The lioness in the restaurant was now the prey, and I was the lion.

  “Take off that dress, Alex.”

I stood watching her as she grabbed the hem and pulled it over her head, left standing there in a silver bra that accentuated those creamy tits and a pair of silver panties.

  “Now the bra.”

She unhooked it from the back but rather than throw it on the floor, she threw it at me. I caught it and bit the cup of the bra showing her what she had in store.

  “And the panties.”

She wiggled them down her legs and off and then walked over to me. Then she held the panties under my nose and moved her hand across so her musky scent entered my nostrils.

  I growled.

  “Onto the bed.”

“No.” She said and smiled. “Your turn. Take off that shirt.”

I laughed. Looked like she wasn’t my prey at all.

I unbuttoned my shirt slowly and shed it. She moved her hands across my abdomen taking in the toned muscles that my regular gym attendance helped keep intact.

  “Now the pants.”

I unbuckled my belt, slid it through the loops of my pants and Alex caught it.
