As I was admiring the delicate beauty of the lilies, the cell phone rang. I glanced at the screen, private number.
I picked up.
"Ollie, it's Mr. Oden from the Havis County Insurance Company. I'm on vacation right now, visiting the queen in London! How are you doing?" He didn't wait for a response. "I'm calling you about the fire."
"Fire?" I said in semi comprehension still admiring the flowers.
"You had a fire at Ealing Homestead. I'm calling you about that."
"Yes," I said confused.
"I'm following up because you haven't yet filed your claim."
"But my premiums have expired!"
Mr. Oden was silent for a moment. "Ollie, all Havis County Insurance Company customers receive a two-week grace period. Your premiums expired nine days ago. If we file your claim today and renew your premiums, Havis County Insurance Company will have your back."
The significance of his words sunk in fast. "How did you know about the fire?"
"Our employees are your neighbors," Mr. Oden replied with a little laugh.
Now I was lightheaded—deliciously, deliriously lightheaded. "Oh, that's wonderful," I stammered.
There was a slight pause, then, crackling over the phone, soft instrumental music began to play—the theme tune from the Havis County Insurance Company commercials. Mr. Oden lowered his voice, and over the soft, gentle strains of the familiar melody uttered the company's famous slogan. "With Havis County Insurance you are in safe company when disaster strikes. You'll be pleased we are local. Our employees are your neighbors."
"Oh yes," I said, hurrying into the kitchen to grab my credit card. "They sure are, and Mr. Oden the Havis County Insurance Company policy is worth every penny."
