“No, no, don’t be. I didn’t expect you to stay single forever. If you’re happy, then I’m glad.” She said, forcing a smile on her face, yet he could still hear the sadness beneath it.

“I am sorry though.” Caleb admitted quietly. “For everything. I know we haven’t really talked about it and… Seeing you last night for the first time really threw me. It brought back so many memories.”

“Yeah. For me too. We really did have some good times, huh?” her smile growing more genuine. “And…don’t apologize. No one’s fault.”

Caleb just nodded slowly, taking a long drag from his coffee cup before hitting a burst of honesty. “It scares me.” The look on Kendall’s face was enough for him to go on. “Falling for someone else. I keep seeing your face. And how I hurt you…how we hurt each other. And…”

“Being hurt is always a risk. And yeah, it blows. But don’t stop yourself because you’re worried about it. You might miss out on something really good.”

“That sounds like something that you read off a Hallmark card or in a fortune cookie.” He said with a little chuckle, though knowing she was right.

“Hey, I am in marketing for a reason. I know how to sell someone on something.” She reasoned. “But seriously? Fall.”

  Chapter Twenty One

The next night, Maggie found herself at Michael’s Craft Store passing the time, looking for new pans and baking supplies when her cell phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, she smiled before answering it.

  “Hey!”

  “Hey yourself.” Caleb replied.

  “How’s Toronto treating you?”

“Good! It’s been great catching up with everyone too.”

  “That’s great!”

“Yeah. So, hey, what are you doing?”

“I’m at Michael’s.” Maggie responded nonchalantly.

  “You’re...where?”

“Michael’s.” She stated again, only to be met with a silence. “The craft store.”

“Oh! Right.” Caleb said, letting out a big sigh of relief. Not like he thought she was the type of girl to date around, but you never know!

“Why? Where did you think I meant?”

“Uh, nowhere important. So,” he started, changing the subject, “you’re not home?”

“Nope, but I should be there soon. I’m almost done here.”

“Okay, well, I sent you something and it will probably be there when you get back.”

“What? Why’d you send me something? You get back tomorrow. If anything, you could have just given it to me then.”

“True, but this couldn’t wait. Anyways, I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye, babe.”

“Bye.” Maggie said before ending the call.

Michael’s was a place she could spend hours in, but now her curiosity had gotten the better of her and she headed straight for the checkout in order to see what Caleb had sent her. In less than fifteen minutes, Maggie was at her apartment building, anxiously waiting for the elevator to open and let her out. When it did, she rushed to her door. She had expected to see something waiting outside the door in the hall for her, but there was nothing there.

“Huh” she thought to herself as she unlocked the door, letting herself in.

Not bothering to look up, she dropped her keys on the side table she knew was beside the door and walked in to the kitchen to put her bags down. Placing them on the counter, she turned to flick the lights on only to be met by a dark shadow looming in the corner of her eye. She tried her best not to panic, but she couldn’t help but scream as she turned the lights on and was getting ready to make a mad dash for the front door when she turned around she was able to see what the dark shadow was, now cast in light.

  Caleb.

“You. What? But you’re...Toronto.” Maggie sputtered, trying to gather her thoughts and make sense of it all.

“The schedule got changed around a bit and I was able to come home early.” Caleb replied, quickly adding “I’m sorry I scared you.”

Maggie smiled and ran across the kitchen and in to his arms. Caleb’s arms wrapped tightly around Maggie as they held each close for what seemed like forever, yet not long enough.

“I missed you.” Caleb whispered in her ear.

“I missed you too.” She replied in an equally hushed tone.

Caleb felt himself get a nervous feeling in the pit of his stomach. Part of it, he knew, was from being back with Maggie after talking with Kendall; knowing that he shouldn’t be afraid to fall. But the other part he knew was from Kendall and not knowing whether or not to bring up the fact that he saw his ex-girlfriend when he was away.

He honestly felt horribly guilty for even thinking the things he had thought the night before. But, he was human and he had his flaws and cracks, but he also knew that going back there wasn’t right, wasn’t something that he needed or wanted to have in his life right now. Despite all this, he didn’t want it to come about that she was there and him not having told her himself. That would look even worse. He was a firm believer in ‘if you have nothing to hide, why not say it yourself.’

“Kendall was there.” He spat out, not even really knowing where the words came from, but ultimately knew that for his conscience he had to tell her.

This admission caused Maggie to pull back from him ever so slightly. “Kendall? Kendall Kendall?” she asked, trying to process in her brain whether he was referring to his ex-girlfriend of almost four years or just some random person that happened to have the same name. Hell, who was she kidding, she knew which Kendall he was talking about, she was just trying to remain calm.

Caleb hadn’t told Maggie too much about Kendall, just as Maggie hadn’t told Caleb too much about Thomas. They were both sore topics of sorts for both of them. Who really likes talking about their exes anyways, really? And what new partner likes hearing about them. Maggie liked that Caleb didn’t pry in to that side of things and she felt that when his ex-girlfriend was brought up, that it was important that she be the same way. But to be honest, she was interested to know more. She knew they were together for a long time and the fact that they broke up for what seemed like the sole reason of because she moved away kind of made her think what if. But Maggie had put those thoughts in the back of her mind because it didn’t matter; they were together now. Besides, Kendall was in London. Far, far away. Apparently.

  “Maggie…”

“Yeah?” Maggie shot, a little too perky, but Caleb’s voice took her out of her train of thought.

“She was in town for work and the guys invited her. I just…I don’t know. Nothing happened, but I just felt like I should tell you she was there.”

“Oh. Okay.” She replied, still not really knowing what to think. Caleb’s conscience was clear, but his clearing made her cloudy.

“Maggie, I… I’m sorry. It’s stupid to even bring up. I just…it honestly threw me for a loop seeing her. And it made me question some things.”

“Oh.” Maggie managed to get out, starting to feel like things were about to crumble around her.

“I was drunk and just got comfortable in thinking about the past. The memories.”

Maggie pulled back more from Caleb so that his arms were no longer around her. “Are you wanting to get back together with her?”

“What? No. No! I just… You scare me.”

  “I…what?”

Well, thought Caleb, this is going horribly, horribly wrong.

“Maggie. I guess what I’m ultimately trying to say is that yes, I saw Kendall and it brought up some memories of when things were good. But no, I don’t want to get back together with her. And as for you scaring me. I guess that came out really wrong. It’s just… you were hurt before and thought that I was like Thomas. We all have our pasts that cause reservations. Because of my past with Kendall, I was afraid to fall again. And to be honest, I kept seeing her in every girl I was with. But I know I can move past that now. I needed to see her again. And now I know it was to get closure.”

“Uh huh…” Maggie led. Still trying to process everything.

“All this because I felt I should tell you I saw her.” He said, sounding defeated as he made his way to the couch.

Maggie’s brain was still running a mile a minute. The honesty he had expressed was both refreshing and puzzling. He had to know that telling her that there were memories stirred up when he saw her would not make her a happy camper. But yet he still felt like he needed to tell her. Because he really did have nothing to hide?

“So, you want to be here. With me. Is that basically what you were getting around to?” Maggie asked.

  “Yes.”

“Okay.” She said. “Then come here.”

Caleb turned around to look at her and got up off the couch to rejoin her where they were before. “I do usually have a point I’m trying to get to. I just…words.” He said shrugging, causing Maggie to laugh before she leaned in to give him a kiss.

“I’m glad you had a good trip. And if it helped, I’m glad you saw Kendall. But mostly, I’m just really glad you’re here.” She said before resuming kissing him. “Wait.” She said, leaning back slightly to look him in the eye. “How did you get in here?”

A big smile came across Caleb’s face as he replied “I’m a ninja,” only to be met with a slap on the arm from Maggie. “Fine, fine. Taylor let me in. I called her because I wanted to see if I could surprise you and she told me she still had a spare key you gave her, so...”

Caleb wasn’t able to finish that sentence before Maggie rose up on her tip toes and kissed him with all the passion that she had been saving up while he was away. Caleb’s lips met her fervour and it didn’t take long before articles of clothing started making their way off of bodies and on to the floor. Maggie took control and led Caleb down the small hallway to her bedroom. As she entered the room first, Caleb spun her around to face him, capturing her lips with his once again and gently pushing her towards the bed. When the back of her legs made contact with the mattress, Maggie sat down and pulled Caleb’s hips towards her. Instinctively, she went for the button of his pants that still remained on and made quick work of undoing them and pulling them down, allowing them to pool on the floor at Caleb’s feet. He quickly stepped out of them, kicking them aside as Maggie began to palm his crotch from outside of his boxers.

“Baby.” Caleb moaned in to the pleasure that was building inside of him.

Maggie looked up at him and proceeded to stand up from her spot on the bed, all the while not stopping what her hand was doing. Tilting her head up so as to be able to whisper to him, she let him know “I want you.” Applying a bit more pressure with her hand, she assured him she wanted all of him.

Caleb’s moans became more guttural as Maggie continued her work down south. He wanted to be inside her just as much as she wanted him too and he also knew if she kept up what she was doing, he’d be spent.

Caleb took her hands in his and kissed her palms lightly as he let them fall down to her sides. He slid his hands up her torso and around her back where he undid the clasp of her bra with ease and kissed down each of her shoulders as he lightly grazed her skin with his fingers as he removed the straps. Using his strength, he picked Maggie up and laid her on the bed, positioning himself over her, resting above her on his arms so as to not crush her.

He leaned down and placed a single kiss on her lips, another on her chin and continued his way down her neck to the hallow between her breasts, on to her stomach, until he reached the top of her panties. Kissing where the hem met her skin, he gently pulled them down her legs, fully removing them. Standing at the foot of the bed, Caleb took a moment to take in the sight of the woman that lay before him. To him, she was perfect and beautiful in every way and he felt so very blessed in that moment.

“I love you.” He stated, not knowing himself where the words were coming from.

Maggie sat up on her elbows. “You don’t need to say that just to have sex with me. Or because you’re still feeling guilty for talking in circles earlier.”

Caleb couldn’t tell if she was joking or not, but that didn’t matter. The minute the words were out, he knew they were right. “None of the above is the reason. I just… I love you.”

A soft smile formed on Maggie’s lips. “Good. Because I love you too, Caleb.”

He smiled and stepped out of his own underwear and made his way back to the position he had once occupied on the bed, above her. “You know, I never meant to tell you that while we were both laying here naked, it just...came out. But it is the truth.”

Maggie couldn’t help but smile at Caleb’s words. She ran her hand down the side of his face and kissed him soundly. “And that’s all that matters.”

Caleb slowly lowered himself down to Maggie and in to her kiss. He positioned himself at her entrance, never breaking the kiss. He wanted nothing more to be inside her, but he didn’t want to hurt her so he took his time, making sure she was okay every step along the way. When he finally reached the hilt and Maggie told him it was alright, he began to move himself in and out of her. The moans escaping her mouth let him know it was okay to quicken his pace.

He gradually started moving faster and faster until both of them were breathing heavy and all you could hear were the sounds of their pleasure and their bodies coming together time and again. Caleb could feel himself getting close. She was so tight that the friction of her walls was bringing him quickly to the brink. He could feel Maggie start to arch in to him so he placed one hand behind her back to bring her closer while the other hand he slipped between the two of them. It wasn’t even a moment later when Maggie felt where he was. With his hand, he began to rub and pinch at her clit, upping the ante. The feeling of his soft fingers with the hint of roughness left by his guitar strings created a juxtaposition of feelings that she couldn’t get enough of. Her body took over and she arched herself towards him even more, not needing the hand he had placed there for support or direction.

The sounds that were coming out of their mouths could only be described as primal for they were not formed coherently but were formed out of the desire and pleasure and the assurance that the other was hitting the right spots. Pulling her even closer to him and bucking his hips upward, Caleb penetrated Maggie even deeper causing her to call out in ecstasy. The sounds of her pleasure and the feeling of being deeper inside her caused Caleb to reach his limit. He continued to buck his hips towards her as she reached her own climax and both of them cried out and clung to each other as the electricity surged throughout their bodies.

As they both collapsed on the bed next to each other, silence overtook them as they both tried to catch their breaths and regain their composure. When Caleb found himself able to form full sentences again, he rolled over to look at Maggie.

  “Are you okay?”

“I’m amazing.” Maggie replied sweetly, looking at him with passion and love in her eyes.

Caleb gently wiped a stray hair off her still damp forehead and tucked in behind her ear. He kissed her forehead sweetly and with that, they both fell asleep in each other’s arms.

  Chapter Twenty Two

In the morning, Caleb rolled over on the bed only to feel an empty space beside him. He cracked one eye open and stared at the sheets and pillow beside him. Wondering where she was wasn’t a thought that he had long to process because soon the quiet, off key strumming sounds of a guitar could be heard coming from down the hall. Making his way out of bed, he quickly pulled his boxers on before walking down the small hallway he knew led to the living room. He was quiet so as to not let Maggie know he was there and on his approach he saw her sitting on one of the barstools that sat at the island dividing the kitchen from the living room, wearing nothing but his t-shirt and attempting to play the guitar. Caleb couldn’t help but smile at the look of deep concentration that was written all over her face as she attempted to place her fingers correctly to make a chord.

And how amazing her legs were.

And the slight outline of her breasts that
he could see underneath the white t-shirt.

“So, are you planning on serenading me this morning?” Caleb asked as he approached her.

Maggie looked up at him, a slight blush forming on her cheeks at being caught. Caleb had come to her place straight from the airport and when she woke this morning she noticed the guitar case in the living room and curiosity got the better of her. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. Or go through your stuff.” Maggie replied, passing the guitar back to him.

Caleb leaned in gently against the bar and kissed her lips deeply. “Nothing to apologize for.” Caleb replied sitting in the stool next to Maggie, turning on it to face her. “Well, maybe you should apologize for those horrible attempts at chords you were making.”

“Uh!” Maggie gasped as she playfully hit his arm. “Not all of us can be musicians and dancers and...”

“Great kissers?” Caleb questioned as he leaned towards her and took his mouth and placed it over hers before she had a chance to respond. Before she knew it, she felt his tongue tracing along her bottom lip, but she refused to let him in. Pulling away, she replied point blank, “Not until you play for me.”

With that, Caleb picked up the guitar and looked at Maggie who was now beaming. He began to play a beautiful melody that she hadn’t heard before. When he started singing, the smile left Maggie’s face for all she could do was stare at him with adoration, wondering how this man could be hers.

Maggie felt a tear come to her eye as she listened to the words. The melody was familiar, but hearing the lyrics coming from Caleb, it seemed they were meant solely for her. When the last few chords were played ending the song, she jumped off her stool and hugged Caleb, who managed to move the guitar out of the way in time. When she pulled away, Caleb noticed the tears on her cheek. He brushed them away with his thumbs, while holding her face near his.
