Secrets for Sale

Page 19

by Jerri Kay Lincoln

After we talked about Christa’s prior relationship with Christopher Fenton, I said, “Interesting that I thought it had to do with the historical society sale, but it was really secrets for sale.”

We spent most of what was left of the afternoon on the couch in each other’s arms and said nothing more about the murder. The situation had scared both of us, and we were both grateful the other had survived. Billy had eaten while he was out and about, and I was stuffed with pizza, so we each had a sandwich and not too long after that decided to retire early.

We lay there in silence for a long time, comforted by being in each other’s arms. Then Billy said, “I got the ballistics back on Petra’s father’s gun.”

I didn’t know if he suspected foul play or not, but I wasn’t going to say anything. “Oh?” I tried to sound ignorant about the guy’s death. Billy and Mason were close.

“Yes, it matched another crime of several years back during the term of that sheriff killed in Chicago. You’ve probably heard the rumors. Petra’s brother. It was set up to look like suicide, but it wasn’t. The sheriff couldn’t find any evidence to the contrary, but I don’t know how hard he tried. Petra’s brother was murdered. It wasn’t suicide. And funny how it was the same gun found at Petra’s father’s bedside.”

Where was he going with this, I wondered. Did he suspect Mason? Would he arrest him?

Then Billy gave me the answer I wanted.

  “But justice was served.”

Billy knew. And Mason wouldn’t be arrested—because justice was served.
