“Have I told you how beautiful you are?” Tavin asked, slipping an arm around her shoulders.
“You have, but I never tire of hearing your compliments.” This time she couldn’t stop her yawn. “It seems like this day has lasted a week.” She laid her head against Tavin’s shoulder and sighed in contentment.
“We’ll no doubt cause a scandal,” he whispered.
“No doubt. Do you think anyone will be able to tell we’re just married?”
“Probably,” he chuckled. “Pity we couldn’t get a private car.”
“Yes, it is. How long is this train ride to Chicago?” she asked.
“A lot longer than I wish,” he murmured.
Emmalyne smiled and closed her eyes. “You’re the one who wanted to go to Chicago.”
“I know,” he replied with a rueful chuckle. “It wasn’t my best idea of late.”
She giggled. “I agree.” The train picked up speed after it rounded a turn, pressing Emmalyne even closer to her husband. She opened her eyes and pulled back just enough to see Tavin’s face. “But I know what was.”
He touched her cheek with his hand, and the warmth of it left Emmalyne with a sense of protection and surety. “And what would that be, Mrs. MacLachlan?”
“Marrying me,” she said, cocking her head with an appealing smile.
He laughed and pulled her back into his arms to whisper a single word. “Aye.”
