Between shows, Kelsey got up and ran to the restroom, the coffee having hit her, and Ryan called to her, “It’s back on! I’m pausing it.”

“Thanks!” The technology that allowed pausing of live television and fast forward through boring commercials was such a godsend! Since she was up, she grabbed both of them a soda from the fridge and grabbed a tub of dip for the rest of the chips. Settling back in, she slid all the food and drink onto the coffee table and sank into the sofa right next to Ryan.

“Look at you, getting the party started over here,” he commented, chuckling softly. “Thanks, Kelsey. You know, you don’t have to take care of me. You should be out, doing college kid things.”

But Kelsey shook her head. “I’m not interested in going out and getting drunk or screwing some random guy, which seemed to be all my roommates ever talked about anyway. I’d rather sit around and watch reality TV marathons with you. It’s more interesting, there’s less chance of getting arrested or contracting an STD, and better food.” She didn’t add that she felt the need to cling to family, or that she wouldn’t enjoy any of those things without her mother to talk to about it.

“Whatever floats your boat. Just don’t miss out on anything you’ll regret not doing later.” He sat back and hit the play button, starting the show, and Kelsey smiled. It was what Kelsey had always liked about Ryan, even when she resented him coming in because she thought he wanted to replace her father. He was so easygoing, and he had a relaxed attitude that let him go with the flow. He never balked at anything she wanted, no matter how crazy, and he supported her decisions wholeheartedly, simply reminding her to think about any consequences of the actions she wanted to take.

He was a lot like her mother in that way, and Kelsey assumed that’s why they had gotten together. Being around him comforted her, and it was all she wanted to do these days. Feeling sentimental, she pushed up against Ryan, leaning her head on his shoulder. He draped his arm over the back of the couch, just touching her shoulders, and she sighed in contentment.

Kelsey didn’t move, even to eat or drink, for a long time, and Ryan was still as well, with the exception of fast forwarding through the first set of commercials. But they ran out of space to move forward as they caught up to real time during the second commercial break, and they were forced to watch the blaring advertisements.

Kelsey started to get up and stretch, leaning forward to push herself to her feet, but she heard the first few notes of a song coming from the television, and she stopped, motionless as she stared at a Hallmark commercial. She heard Ryan’s sharp intake of breath as well, both of them more focused on the song than the emotional ad. It had been her mother’s favorite song, and hearing it now, Kelsey felt a stab through her heart, as if someone had grabbed an ice pick and shoved it into her chest.

Her eyes watered, and her lungs collapsed. Ryan’s hand closed over hers, and she clutched at him so tightly she just knew his fingers would break. But she couldn’t help it, and she could feel him trembling in his attempt to hold back his own emotions. That was enough to break her will, and she sobbed once, twice, and turned quickly, burying her face in Ryan’s shoulder.

He held her clutched against his chest, one hand pressed to her back and the other on the back of her head as he kissed the top of her hair. She felt his tears fall on her, and she only cried harder. God, she missed her mother so much! And Ryan was the only one who understood just how tough these last six months had been. She leaned into him now, letting herself pour out her emotion in a way she hadn’t done since the funeral, and he did the same, his chest heaving beneath her as he gasped past his tears for air.

Forcing herself to get it under control, she pushed off Ryan’s chest and looked into his eyes, red-rimmed and watery. “Someday, it’s going to get better, right?” she asked, touching his cheek.

Something in his eyes changed, and he reached to brush some dark hair from her face. His touch was so tender it made Kelsey want to start weeping all over again, and she held her breath as their gazes locked. Something tightened in her chest, and Ryan leaned forward, slowly, and just enough so that their lips touched with the fleeting tickle of butterfly wings. He pulled back, staring at her in wonder, and Kelsey didn’t know what to think. Her body buzzed, and she suddenly felt warm all over.

Unable to identify the sensation, she leaned towards him and pressed her lips to his, not so lightly this time, testing the waters. He kissed her back, his tongue parting her lips, and the taste of him was sweet and musky, like the smell of expensive cologne. She tilted her head, letting him deeper, and his tongue caressed the roof of her mouth, ran over her teeth.

His hands slid up her back, onto her neck, and they fisted in her hair as the kiss grew more intense. She shifted her petite form into his lap and gasped at the evidence of his arousal pressed against her leg, all the while marveling in the way her body reacted to him. This was wrong, but it felt oh so right as she moved again so their chests brushed against each other.

Ryan grunted and tugged at her hair, his mouth coming down on her throat, his tongue licking a line over the hollow just below. She panted, whimpered, never having felt anything so wonderful, so invigorating, and as he rolled so that she lay back on the couch with his body over her, she drank in the delicious weight of him resting on top of her.

Kelsey’s hands trembled as she reached under the robe, around his back, and pushed them beneath his shirt, feeling the muscles in his back moving with well-oiled grace as his hands explored her body. He ran them over her arms, her stomach, grabbed her hip and pulled her leg up so her foot rested on his lower back. She could feel the need in his groin as his erection pressed against her center, causing hot moisture to pool in her panties.

“Kelsey.” He whispered her name, and it made the hairs on her arms stand on end like a cool breeze on a warm night. Her senses overwhelmed and the television playing in the background forgotten, she splayed her fingers over his ass, only the thin material of his boxers between their flesh, and she pulled him against her, crying out at the hard length of him rubbing against her.

Ryan’s fingers crawled beneath her shirt, pushing it up her body until her stomach and breasts were exposed, stopping to kiss her navel, then each nipple with incredibly gentle lips. She raised her arms as he pulled the shirt over her head, leaving her bare from the waistband of her jeans up. She blushed; it had been a long time since she’d been intimate with anyone, and Ryan wasn’t just anyone. He was handsome, older, experienced. But he looked at her with eyes that ate her alive, and he proved his desire by devouring her with his lips.

Kelsey couldn’t get enough of him, and she shoved in frustration at the robe still hanging from his shoulders. He sat up and yanked it off, and she tore the shirt over his head. Her fingers massaged his firm chest, his flat stomach, and he threw his head back and let his eyelids fall closed as she innocently learned his body by touch. She was amazed at how natural it felt to touch him like this, at the way her stomach ached with the need to feel him inside her as she watched his face.

He clenched his jaw tight, and she felt the twitch of his cock as his arousal grew. Bravely, Kelsey reached down between her legs and gripped him through the boxers with one hand, and her eyes widened at his thickness, again as she slid her hand up and down and took note of his length. He felt perfect, and she wanted to see him, touch him, with nothing coming between them.

She heard Ryan’s hiss as she let go, only to push his boxers down, and he kicked them to the floor, lying nude with his perfectly sculpted body on top of her. Kelsey reached out again, and this time, when she closed her fingers around him, he made a guttural noise, thrusting against her palm in reaction.

Enthused that he enjoyed her ministrations, she was driven to work harder, moving her hand faster with more pressure, and eventually, he slapped her arm away, linking his fingers in hers and pushing her arm over her head, against the arm of the couch. “If you keep going, I won’t be able to hold back,” he warned, his voice straine
d with need.

“Don’t,” she begged, pushing against his hold on her until he released her and she could unbutton the fly of her jeans. He watched with hot eyes, and Kelsey felt like she’d been thrown into a volcano, her whole body burning until she thought she would melt in the flow of lava. He helped her get the jeans and her panties down, slipping them off her ankles and tossing them next to his boxers.

She saw his Adam’s apple bounce as he swallowed hard, staring at her center, and as he leaned over to kiss her with more passionate tenderness, he slipped a hand between her thighs, parting her slick lips and pushing one finger inside her. She cried out into his mouth as her body convulsed, and he moved his finger back and forth, making the orgasm last as it poured over her like a tidal wave.

Ryan drew his thumb over her cleft, and she nearly choked at the additional stimulation, her whole body bucking against him as he brought her to another crest that had her seeing stars. She turned her head aside, gulping for air as she broke the kiss. “Please, Ryan! Please!”

He nuzzled her ear with his nose and lips. “Please what, Kelsey? What do you want? You have to say it, or I can’t do it.”

That was Ryan, and it blew her mind that the same man she’d known for so long could make her feel this way and still maintain that careful support of her wishes, even offering to stop now, if that was what she wanted. “No, please, don’t stop. I want this, Ryan.”

His eyes blazed even hotter at the remark, and he moved his hand, pushing her legs wider apart as he lowered himself between her thighs. She felt the head of him pushing against her, and it made her hips buck, but she stilled, waiting, as he slid into her with one long, slow thrust. He rested there, looking pained, for nearly a minute, and when he opened his eyes, he attacked her mouth. He began slowly moving in and out of her, the feel of him incredible with just the right amount of fiction to build another release that blew up in her face like fireworks.

She wrapped both legs around him, angling her hips up to take more of him, and she could feel him pressing all the way into her, as far as he could go, making her shout with each push at the maddeningly delicious sensation. She came over and over again, until she could feel her own inner walls tremble and convulse with her pleasure. Ryan clenched his jaw again, and Kelsey just watched his face as the ecstasy took away all thought, and she saw the moment he, too, found his peak in the split second of tightness before his face went slack.

She felt him pour into her, his cock throbbing as she came once more, her body milking him, the two of them sharing this rapture. When he finished, she thought he might fall on top of her, too spent to move, but with painfully slow, aching movements, he pulled away, sitting back and gathering her tiny body in his arms until she was cradled against him.

They didn’t speak, and Kelsey guessed his eyes were fixated on the screen, unseeing, much like hers. She could fall asleep like this and not think twice about it. “Are you okay?” he asked, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

She nodded, and when she spoke, her voice was gruff with the satisfaction of afterglow. “I’m much better than okay.” She lifted her head to look at him, saw the question in his eyes, and she thought about what had just happened. But it didn’t feel wrong, and she didn’t regret it.

He asked the question she had just considered. “You don’t think we…betrayed her, do you?” He looked worried, and Kelsey understood. They had both loved her mother dearly, more than anyone could imagine, and the thought of doing something, even now that she was gone, to hurt her was intolerable.

But Kelsey smiled and shook her head at Ryan. “No, I don’t. In fact, because of the way it happened, I think Mom wanted us to find each other.” She pointed to the television. “It was Mom’s song that brought us together. Maybe it was meant to happen.”

Ryan looked at her thoughtfully. “You aren’t just spouting off something you learned in Psych 101, are you?”

She laughed softly. “No, Ryan, I really do believe that.” But her smile faded at the more serious thought on her mind. “Um, I don’t know how you feel about any of this, and I don’t want to make assumptions. I think we should talk about it.”

He cupped her chin in his hand and locked eyes with her again. “I don’t really think there’s much to talk about. I have always cared about you, Kelsey, and now, you’re old enough to elicit something a little stronger from me, as the case may be. I want you in my life, and I’ll do just about anything to make sure that happens.”

Elated she kissed him. When she’d fallen for Ryan, she didn’t know. Maybe it was an hour ago, or maybe it was when he’d come to Career Day her freshman year of high school. It didn’t matter. What did matter was that she loved him, and not as a father figure. She loved him as a man, regardless of their age difference. “Nobody will understand.”

He nodded. “Probably not. But maybe they will. And if they don’t, we don’t need them anyway. We can move, if you’re worried about perception. We can go somewhere that we’re the only ones grieving over your mother so no one points fingers or makes painful comments.” He kissed her forehead. “That choice is yours. You’ve always chosen well for yourself.”

Yes, she had, and he’d been there to catch her, in case she fell. This was the first time it had happened, though, and maybe it was a leap of faith rather than stumbling and falling. She considered the idea of moving, but she wasn’t quite ready to leave her mother’s house just yet. “Let’s see how it goes. We have time to make decisions like that.”

Two months later, Kelsey walked beside Ryan, holding his hand proudly, as they left the real estate agent’s office, a brand new key in each of their hands. Kelsey’s grin stretched from ear to ear, and Ryan looked just as pleased. “Congratulations, Mrs. Peters.”

She blushed. “The same to you, Mr. Peters.” Aside from selling her mother’s house to the historical society to become the new home of an art museum featuring local historical works, they’d signed papers on a new house and gotten married, all in one day. The Justice of the Peace had been kind enough to come out to this office so they could have their agents witness the marriage and not be noticed by the people around town who couldn’t seem to stop talking.

Kelsey still missed her mother terribly, but she’d finally found a way to go on, and with her mother’s love of history and the community, she’d be pleased to know what her house was being used for. That gave Kelsey the final sense of peace, and it appeared to have settle Ryan as well, who was sleeping more soundly and looking like his old self. She gazed up at him as they climbed in the truck – they’d sold the sedan to a needy family for pennies on the dollar – and couldn’t believe Ryan Peters was her husband.

She’d never planned for anything like this to happen, but her mother had always thought ahead. Had she known they would find each other in love if something ever happened to her? Kelsey wouldn’t have been surprised.

The new house was just outside of town, where they could live in peace without being harassed by townsfolk who claimed they were destroying her mother’s memory, or that the woman would be rolling in her grave, or even that such an age difference was crazy and Ryan must be a dirty, filthy person. Kelsey had been right; half of them assumed they’d been ‘playing house’ since she was a teenager, and the other half seemed to forget that she wasn’t one anymore. She didn’t care what they thought; they had to answer for their own actions and find their own happiness, the way she and Ryan had found theirs.

As the stepped over the threshold of the new house as owners for the first time, all Kelsey could think about was getting up to the bedroom to christen the house. Besides being madly in love, hers and Ryan’s sex life was incredible, and there were a few select friends she kept in touch with who were green with envy. She felt his hand tighten on hers, though, and it made her focus on him rather than on the image of him naked in her mind.

“Are you sure this is the one?” he asked, his eyes taking in everything in front of them.

  “This is defin
itely the one.” She pointed to the living room. “That area is big enough to have couches and a television, with a pool table in the back. The kitchen has a nice little breakfast nook that overlooks the backyard, just like Mom’s. There are four bedrooms, so you can have a home office or study or whatever, and we still have room for children. And those children are going to love the backyard.” She had packed the swing, and it was in a bag in the back of the truck. Of course, she’d have to make a new one, but she was never getting rid of the one she’d grown up with. “We can even renovate the basement to make a playroom.”

He nodded, looking nostalgic. “That was one thing your mother and I couldn’t do. We couldn’t have children.” He hugged her tight to his side. “Maybe we will someday, though, right?”

She bit her lip. Kelsey looked up at him with wide eyes. “What if someday were sooner than later?” He frowned at her. “Like, seven months from now?”

His eyes bulged. “But I thought you were on birth control…” He trailed off, obviously stunned.

She shrugged. “So did Mom. I didn’t want her to worry, but I’ve never been on birth control.” Kelsey gave him a pleading look. “You aren’t angry, are you?”

He shook his head, a broad smile curling his lips as his eyes lit up. “No, I’m not mad at all. I’m thrilled.” He kissed her soundly. “And I think your mother would love to know that we’re carrying on the family name.”

It was a sincere statement, and Kelsey couldn’t have been more thrilled. She’d come so far in the last two months, with Ryan’s help, that she felt like a new person. They both had. Rather than feeling the loss of her mother, now she felt her mother’s influence in her life, every day and in every decision she made. It was as if her mother had laid a hand over her heart, protecting her and soothing her, and it made her feel secure. She wrapped her arms around Ryan’s waist, feeling his arms come around her, and she basked in his love.

Everything was falling into place, and Ryan was right. Kelsey was proud to carry his child, and to hell with anyone who thought their love was wrong. Something that felt this good could only be right.
