But what I want doesn’t really matter anymore. I have someone to love. I have Susie. That hole in my heart, where Annie used to live, has been sown up by her memory.

The truth, though, is that this story has nothing to do with me. I hate to sound like a teacher – that is inevitably what I am becoming – but this book is about lessons. You can read all the Grimm books you like, ask many questions as you can, but the only way to really learn how to be a Huntsman is to work. It’s like police work. For all the TV shows and movies, nothing is really like reality. Nor should it be.

I hate to end on such a sad note – my first piece ended on a happy one – but this story also shows the Versteckt world one very important thing; the Nobles are rising.

We are not alone. The Nobles are back in town and they’re pissed. They want revenge for the sins they think we have committed. Revenge for the fact that we freed ourselves from their tyranny. They want power again, over all of us. In the past, we broke free from their chains by escaping to America.

Where else do we have to go now? The world is not as big as it used to be, not for practical purposes, at least – there are no unexplored regions, no place that the Nobles cannot find us – and that means we can’t run. That means we must fight, or bend the knee, never to rise up again.

There will come a time when we, as communities and as individuals, must decide which more important, our freedom or peace, because there is a war coming. And in a war, there is no middle ground, only sides.

Choose your side carefully, because you will live or die by your choice. Live or die. Live defeated or die free. Your choice.

Angie Klingemann is released from juvenile detention. She needs a place to stay.

Marty Phillips and his adopted daughter, Susie, have settled into life as a family. He reluctantly takes the girl in and gives her a job. Marty continues his training to become a full Huntsman.

Three members of the Merkel gang have escaped and they want revenge.

The tension between the Huntsmen and the Nobles increases. Marty prepares the disorganised Huntsmen for war.
