Mark went to his room. He knelt at his window with his arms on the sill. He looked out at the black Channel and the great dark sky above it. There were stars shining, millions of miles away. It was all so big and wide that it made him feel a bit small and lonely. He thought perhaps it would be good to know that he belonged to a heavenly Father who guided the stars and the sea – but who still cared about one boy.
Carol snuggled down under the blankets and thought about the baby: Our family… God’s family… Mum and Dad, Mark and me and Richard John… Fluff, Tippet and the rabbits and a loving heavenly Father… it’s nice to belong…
Then Carol fell asleep.
