Stacy wasn’t a violent person though and for all her dreams of vengeance she just didn’t have it in her to cause harm. Sneering, Mike grabbed the hand holding the tool and squeezed with both of his until he heard bones snap. As she gasped for breath he snatched the screwdriver and quickly stabbed into her stomach. It was surprisingly easy to jab in and aside from the occasional time that he hit a bone he found it almost soothing to keep sticking the metal rod inside her. He lost track of time.

Stacy’s soul went on with her journey leaving Josh alone with Mike.

Josh had never actually hurt anyone before, he believed in personal choice and the freedom of the individual to choose which side of the line to dance on. However, in this room he didn’t feel that the correct choice had been made, he felt no spiritual love or forgiveness. He only felt a seething resentment at the futility of kindness.

In this room, dancing on the line between light and dark, Josh made a choice. He chose darkness.

Exhausted, Mike dropped to his knees and felt along Stacy’s wrist for a pulse that was not there; her glassy eyes stared upwards to the ceiling while the heat of her wounds drifted up to his face. He pulled away quickly and was violently sick against the sofa.

Wiping the vomit from his mouth with a bloodied sleeve he groped his way into the kitchen for a beer. He opened the fridge door and leaned in to see which shelf they were on.

Josh gathered all his strength and closed the fridge door with enough force to crush his skull and spew Martin’s brains out onto the kitchen floor. The door rocketed backwards and fell off its hinges.

  It felt good.

Shadows formed in the corners of the room, grew, joined and snaked over Martin’s corpse. His soul rose from his body but was instantly ensnared by the shadows that twisted and tweaked at him. Struggling, Martin’s soul shrunk into a shadow in the corner and was no more; his journey would not be an easy one.

In the silence of the room, as the blood trickled from Mike’s lifeless body, Josh felt two wings emerge from his back.

Black feathers, glossy and thick, stood proud against the gloom.
