And Mikey. He was so proud of his boy, he could barely contain his love. Mikey was walking, really running most of the time, and talking up a blue storm.

Jenna had promised to teach her little cousin how to ride. And Mikey’s mama wanted him to have shooting lessons just as soon as he was ready.

Sam didn’t care what Mikey learned. As long as he was doing whatever made him happy.

Grace handed the baby over to Travis and glided over to stand beside him. “Hello, husband. What’s on your mind?”

He swung her off her feet and twirled her around like she’d done for Mikey. “Just you, darlin’. Just you. You look like the barn cat who’d swallowed the rat whole. What’s on your mind?”

“Not eating rats. That’s for sure.” She looked a little green.

  “Are you okay?”

“Fine and dandy. But I have a surprise.” She looked around at the family gathered here for the celebration. “I’m glad my grandmother could make it here from L.A. for the wedding.”

“Not fair. Don’t start something without finishing it. What’s the surprise?” He knew they couldn’t get away right now for a honeymoon—not with the new foals expected at any moment. So he couldn’t imagine what she had planned.

She took both his hands in hers and gazed up into his eyes. Sam had never seen so much love directed at him.

It brought tears to his eyes. “What?”

“I’m trying to decide what you’d want most.”

“What are you talking about? Come on, give.”

  “Another boy or a girl?”

“Horses? They’re called colts and fillies. And I think the vet said…”

“No.” She poked him in the ribs and laughed. “Not horses. Humans. Baby humans.”

For the first time since they’d come back to the ranch, Grace had succeeded in rendering him speechless.

When he finally got his senses back he said, “Seriously? We’re… You and me…?”

“Definitely. Are you happy about it?”

“Delirious. I’m, well—stupidly happy about it.”

The smile on her face made him desperate to kiss her. So he did. In front of the whole world, he took his bride in his arms and kissed her with the passion of a man who was fantastically, happily and stupidly in love.

His life had turned to gold without him noticing. He was the luckiest S.O.B. in the whole world. All that had once been sad and dreary was now magical and magnificent.
