“Thanks, Mr. Wes,” she said, wrapping her small arms around his neck and planting a kiss on his cheek.
“You’re welcome.”
“And you’re Superman.” Her face was as serious as a seven-year-old child’s could be.
He chuckled. “No, I’m not.”
Her eyes widened. “Uh huh! I saw you flying over my head. You knocked the bad lady down and saved me.”
He hugged her tightly to him for a moment, then released her and studied her eyes.
“That’s because I love you and your Aunt Kristi. I want to marry her someday.”
Janie’s face brightened as if the sun was just beneath the skin. “Really? You mean it?”
He nodded, knowing he was wearing a silly grin.
“And we can live here with you?”
“Yep. I’m gonna ask her tonight but I need your help, okay?”
Eyes wide and ears apparently perked, Janie nodded gleefully.
“Okay, I need you to get a good night’s sleep. In the morning, you need to ask your aunt if she wants to marry me. Think you can do that?”
Again, the wide-eyed, joyful nodding came from the beautiful little girl.
“Great!” He kissed her forehead again. “Good night, little princess.”
She closed her eyes tightly and he left the room, closing the door behind him. Not having any children of his own, he wasn’t sure what it was like. If having a small person depend on him and believe in him as if he were a superhero, then he’d just experienced it. It was the best feeling on Earth, and he wouldn’t give it up for anything. He couldn’t imagine ever caring for one of his own any more than he did for Janie.

Kristi had made love to Wes a second time that night with more passion and vigor than she’d ever shown him before. It wasn’t simply because she was rewarding him for being a hero, although that may have been the tiniest part of it.
No. The main reason was because she felt more fully alive, more vibrant after what had transpired at her house. And much more deeply in love with him.
Lying there next to him, she was glad the following day was Saturday and neither of them had to work. She wasn’t sleepy at all, and this could turn out to be a very long night.
He turned toward her and lifted himself on his elbow. She gazed into his eyes. Something was glowing within them, and she’d glimpsed it not too many minutes earlier.
His free hand came up and stroked her face, brushing an errant lock of hair back.
“Have I told you how much I love you?” His voice was soft, even reverent.
“Mmm. I think so but you can always repeat it. I don’t mind.”
He smiled. His face was always much more handsome when he smiled.
“Kristi Lloyd, I love you more than life itself, and I always will.”
“Yeah? Are you sure?”
“Uh huh. Definitely.”
“Will you still feel the same in the morning?”
“Without a doubt,” he said.
“Next month?”
“Yes.”
“How about next year?” She knew she was bordering on silliness now, but couldn’t help it.
“Until all time turns to dust.”
“Really?”
“Uh huh. Now it’s my turn to ask a question.”
“Okay, then. Ask away.” Oh, boy. Was she ready to hear this? Yes, she decided in a split second. After all, this was what she’d been wanting him to ask.
“Would you ever consider becoming Mrs. Wesley Chandler?”
“I already have.”
The look of surprise on his face almost made her laugh, but she held it in check.
“Really?”
She nodded.
“And …”
“Pick a day. I’ll be there, all dressed in white.”
