“You deserve so much better. You weren’t raised to be with someone who will do you like that,” Sheryl said, using her hand to lift Simmy’s chin. “I hope you find something in these that will bring you out of whatever it is you’re in. I’ve been praying for you since you left here, and so was Mummy. Even if you don’t do it for you, do it for her.”

Simmy swallowed hard as she looked down at the stack of letters addressed to her, from Kyan. “I can’t believe he was writing to me all of this time. After everything I did.” Simmy seemed to lose the strength in her legs. She flopped down on Mummy Pat’s bed and tore open the letter on the top of the stack. It was obviously the most recent one. Her hands shook as she unfolded the delicate piece of paper and began reading.

  Dear Fly Girl a.k.a. Simone,

How are you? I’m maintaining as best I can given my circumstances. I guess this is the last letter I’ll be sending to you. I really want you to know that I still love you. That will never change. Real love doesn’t just go away because you don’t see eye to eye. The good news I was talking about in my last letter is I should be out a lot sooner than expected. They found a loophole in my case, and they’re setting everything up so they can give me the date of my release. Now all I have to do is stay out of trouble in here and wait for them to let me out. I’ve been spending all of my time reading, and now I write. I’ve even been taking a writing class in here. Enough about me, though. I miss you. I been holding out hope that one of these days your pretty face is going to show up here and say, “Let’s start over, Kyan.” A nigga can pray and wish, right? I hope you’re doing well out there. I hope school is still part of that plan you got going on. I read in this book that when you love something you have to let it go, and if it comes back it is really yours, but if it doesn’t, it never was. That’s like us. We let it go, but I have a feeling it will come back. I always knew and felt that you were mine and we were meant to be.

I’m sorry about everything I said to you the last time you were here. I was just scared that you were gonna get caught up with the nigga Alex and get into the same mess I got into. I know you’re a smart girl and I hope you’ve made the right choices. Being in here, I’ve decided to make better choices when I get out of here too. I want to start over and leave all that illegal shit in the past. I want to be the best man I can be for you. I love you, and I hope to hear back from you soon. In the meantime, I won’t stop writing. You saved me, Simone. Bumping into you that hot summer day in August was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. It gave me the chance to finally be able to talk to you. I will be forever grateful for that summer day that started it all between us.

  Love always,

  Kyan

Simmy could not stop the tears from falling. She couldn’t believe that all of this time Kyan had still been thinking about her and writing to her.

“Like I said, Mummy wanted to be the one to give them to you, but . . .” Sheryl said. She’d been standing there, watching Simmy read the letter.

“It’s okay. Better late than never,” Simmy said.

“That’s what I said. Better late than never.”

Simmy whirled around so fast she almost fell over. Her eyes bulged out of her head like a cartoon character’s. She lost her breath. She thought she was seeing a ghost standing in her grandmother’s doorway.

“What? I thought you would be happy to see me,” Kyan said.

Simmy rushed into him. He wrapped her up in his arms so tight she could barely breathe.

“Oh, my God, Kyan. This is all happening so fast. I just got the letters a few minutes ago,” Simmy cried.

“And, I just got the word about Ms. Pat and came straight here,” he said.

“When did you get home?” Simmy asked, moving back so she could get a good look at him.

“I’ll leave you two to catch up,” Sheryl said as she exited the room.

“Two days ago,” Kyan replied as he locked eyes with Simmy. “I’m back, and I’m ready to claim what’s mine,” Kyan said, running his thumb over her bruised eye. “That nigga Alex did that to you?” he asked.

“Yes,” Simmy responded. She felt embarrassed to admit it to Kyan.

“It’s okay, baby. I’m here now,” Kyan whispered. With that, he gently placed his mouth over hers and kissed her deeply.

Simmy’s mind went blank as she allowed herself to be carried away. She didn’t give one last thought to Alex, but she knew he would be looking for her soon. And, when he found out Kyan was home and Simmy had gone back to him, she knew Alex would flip his lid. Simmy was afraid of how Alex would react to everything.

“Kyan, baby, Alex is dangerous,” she tried to warn Kyan.

“And so am I. He messed with the wrong one. He’s going to pay for what he’s done to you. I promise you that.”
