  “That’s what school is for,” said Father. “And that’s where you’ll be going again, next week. You can regale them all with stories of your travels.”

  “I’m looking forward to it,” I said. “Being so far from home and seeing so many strange things, the main thing I learned was how much I’ve yet to discover.”

  I looked at Mr. Scant as I said this. He was in valet mode just then, standing attentively by the door, but he caught my eye as I spoke those words and nodded a slow nod.

  “So much more to learn,” I said to myself, as I finished my beef and neatly placed my knife and fork onto the center of my plate.
