The Ghosts of Happy Valley
Page 34
I thank Shel Arensen, editor of Old Africa, and Tony Clegg-Butt, editor of Travel News, for encouraging my historical writings; Ian Marshall, John Vaughen and Dick Moss for sharing their old survey maps; John Grimshaw, who read one of the first manuscripts; and Solomon’s Canadian friend Suzanne, for use of her house. I am especially grateful to the late Monty Brown for sharing his library, archives and thoughts on the Erroll murder, and for lending me copies of Chapter 14 of Arthur Wolseley-Lewis’s typed memoir, the part pertaining to the murder, and to both Monty and his wife Barbara for their kind hospitality and inspiring company.
I am especially grateful to the late Mzee Nuthu for his stories, wisdom, kindness and hospitality, and to the extended Nuthu family – but especially Grace, Peter, Paul and Elizabeth – who always welcome me like one of their own. I am grateful, too, for their kind hospitality to Solomon’s cousin Jane and the late Esther Gitau; as well as to those many others who still live in Happy Valley and assisted with my research, including Alfred Githaiga, former caretaker of Slains, who lent me Malcolm Watson’s typed memoirs, the old gardener at Nye-Chart’s, Mama John and her husband, the Karanja family, Solomon’s brother Njuguna, the late Danson Mwaura, Sister Teresa at St Peter’s Polytechnic, Silas Karoga, Muma Maina, Amos and his late father at Kiambaga, Wahome at Morgan, Mrs Kanyoto in Limuru, and Nganga and Virginia at Kipipiri House.
Then there are the many elders I interviewed, including the wazee of Kiambogo: especially Ngugi, Karihe, Wanjiru, Kariuki, Kabiru and ‘Major’ Mururi; the wazee of Kipipiri who shared old memories of their former employers, including Njoroge, Muthoki and Njuguna; the Barkers’ old cook and the men who changed my wheel without a jack; Mau Mau veterans Kamwambao, Mugwe, Njuguna, Mugwe and Wanjiru, who met me at Wanjohi; and the three old men who spoke to me on the slopes of Kipipiri, but especially Mzee Gachau, who has always kept in touch.
There are many more people in Happy Valley whose names I never knew, or have forgotten or omitted in error, who have shown me old houses, put me on the right road or shared memories and cups of tea. Then there are all those children at the schools and along the roadsides, whose smiles and waves rejuvenated me after a long day’s drive. It will be up to them whether the old houses survive or if their children ever see a colobus monkey enjoying its freedom in the indigenous forest.
