by Terry Stenzelbarton

“I got an idea, dad,” Randy told his father over the radio. Jerry looked to where he knew his son was positioned and he could just see the berm through the trees. “It’s not a very good one, in fact it’s a real bad idea, but I think Kellie’s in trouble.” Jerry could hear a little bit of fear in his son’s voice, something he hoped he never had to hear again.

Jerry watched as Randy did something really stupid. He thought quickly. “Eddie, Monica, cover Randy, he going to do something stupid!” he hollered over the other radio to the kids in the Strykers parked on the far hill.

Eddie saw the third heavily-armed vehicle that had entered the rear of the farm crash into the shelter’s escape trench. He also saw Randy running toward the crashed HUMVEE. “You’re right Jerry. Your son’s an idiot, but God love him, look at his fat ass run.”
