Everything But the Earl

by Willa Ramsey

I’m extremely fortunate to have friends, old and new, silver and gold, who encouraged me to write for publication. Christine Teike Hewitt, Chelsa Bailey, and Mary Coelho-Carroll. Nicole Henderson and Stephanie Carmel. Jasmin Ashley Wright. Kezia King and Katyna Smith. My expanding, RISD-based crew.

I have my friend Jon Fernandez to thank for answers to my boxing questions. I’ve tried to do right by his expertise, and any errors are my own.

Then there is my family. I hit the proverbial lottery when it comes to family, and I know it. I have inordinately giving, loving parents in Kathy and Dave; hilarious, supportive siblings in Jenn and Davy; a pair of beloved, generous aunts in Dorothy and Trishy; a late grandmother who was as spirited and creative as she was kind; legions of extended family and family-members-by-marriage, who inquire about my writing at every opportunity; a husband whose expansive love and support defy all my attempts to lasso them with words; and two lively, curious kids who understand that Mommy likes books with a lot of words in them, sometimes puts the words in them herself, and that that is an important, and worthy, thing to do.

I’m so lucky to have you all.

Lastly, a number of written sources helped deepen and expand my knowledge of Regency England. Giles Worsley’s ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS OF THE REGENCY PERIOD, Fraser Simons’s THE EARLY HISTORY OF BALLOONING: THE AGE OF THE AERONAUT, and Emily Eerdmans’s CLASSIC ENGLISH DESIGN AND ANTIQUES: PERIOD STYLES AND FURNITURE greatly enriched this story. The chapters devoted herein to Adam’s boxing match are an homage to William Hazlitt’s iconic 1822 essay “The Fight.” These were all treasure troves to me.

  About the Author

Before becoming a novelist, Willa Ramsey wrote meeting minutes. And web copy. And planning reports. She doesn’t miss those jobs, but appreciates how much they taught her: Transcribing all those conversations? Developed her ear for dialogue. Web writing? Taught her pith. Years of city planning? Gave her a fresh take on Regency London. So her road to becoming an author was full of wrong-turns and unexpected stops. But sometimes, those are just what you didn’t know you needed!
