“But baby, even if the way he handled it was wrong, it was for the right reasons. He made some poor choices and found himself in an impossible situation. Everything he did from that point on was motivated by love and a desire to protect you,” Dimitri added, releasing her fingers and wrapping an arm around her shoulders to pull her closer instead. “He’s an old man, and you’re all the family he has left.”
“I know and I keep reminding myself of that, but the hurt ran so deep for so long it’s tough to just pretend it never happened. But you’re right, and I’m sure I’ll get past it eventually. Besides, he’s the only one who can tell me about my parents,” Elle added wistfully turning to Kat. “My mother really did love the scent of lilacs.”
“Of course she did,” Kat smiled, dropping into a chair next to her husband.
“Okay, so back to this place you found. That’s only four. Why do you need a fifth bedroom?” McAllister frowned as Dimitri rolled his eyes and looked away.
“Isn’t it obvious, my love?” Kat asked. “After all, this is Elle we’re talking about.”
Kat glanced at Elle, Elle winked at Calli. Then all three looked expectantly at McAllister while he thought it through.
“By the Saints,” he chuckled at last. “Dimitri, my brother, you own one pair of sneakers and two pair of motorcycle boots. It must really be love if you’re laying out dough for a five bedroom on the Upper East Side so Elle has a room for her…” He broke off choking as a fit of laughter took him.
“Shoes!” the three women cried in unison.
