During Dark Shadows, Jonathan taped several television public service commercials including spots for the New York Blood Bank and the Christmas Fund and State Fair in Indianapolis. The program was repeated on June 10, 1985 with new live studio pledge wraparounds with Jonathan Frid co-hosting. A third special for NJN was announced for February 20, 1986, entitled Jonathan Frid: On The Darkside, but was never actually produced.

Fan Conventions
Back when Dark Shadows originally aired in the 1960s and early 1970s, the phenomenon of fan conventions had not yet been born. It wasn’t until the Star Trek fan movement of the early 1970s that devotees of genre programs began organizing conventions. These gatherings allowed fans to share and enjoy their interests with other fans, and also gave fans a special opportunity to meet actors and other personnel involved with their favorite series.
The first Dark Shadows convention occurred in 1977 and was actually just a small get-together at a general science-fiction convention, Starcon, in San Diego, California. Two years later, in 1979, the first convention expressly for Dark Shadows was held—ShadowCon, became an annual event in Los Angeles through 1985. By that time, ShadowCon had moved away from Dark Shadows and focused on other science-fiction and fantasy topics. As a result, a new and more ambitious fan convention began in 1983 called the Dark Shadows Festival. The Festival debuted the weekend of September 30 in Newark, New Jersey—20 minutes by commuter train from Dark Shadows’ point of origin, New York City.
With the emergence of the Festival, Dark Shadows experienced a renaissance period in the 1980s. Whereas many fans had not been aware of ShadowCon, the Festivals became high-profile media events that were heavily publicized and attended by thousands of fans from across the United States and beyond.
Dozens of Dark Shadows cast and production alumni have also reunited at the Festivals, enthusiastically answering questions and signing autographs for the show’s legions of followers.
For a brief period, three other Dark Shadows conventions were independently organized. The Inside The Old House fanzine sponsored the Dallas Dark Shadows Convention at the Dallas Dunfey Hotel in 1983 and at the Twin Sixties Hotel in 1984. A New York based group held the Manhattan Shadows convention at Manhattan’s Halloran House Hotel in 1983 and 1985, and 1986. In 1987 and 1988 a convention entitled Dark Shadows Fellowship Fair was coordinated by Louisville, Kentucky fans. The event was held at the historic Seelbach Hotel, owned by Dark Shadows actor and Louisville native Roger Davis.
The Festival remained the major Dark Shadows convention and became a support group for Public Broadcasting System stations, such as the New Jersey Network, that aired Dark Shadows reruns. The convention has also raised funds for other charities over the years, including The Actor’s Fund of America, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Juvenile Diabetes Association and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

FESTIVAL EVENTS
In addition to the multiple-day gatherings at the hotels, the Dark Shadows Festival has also sponsored several special events, including bus trips to series and film locations in Newport, RI, Essex, CT, Scarborough, NY, Tarrytown, NY, Bridgeport, CT and Norwalk, CT.
The Festival held a private party for cast members and fans at the original Dark Shadows ABC-TV Studio 16 on September 1, 1989. The building had been converted into a nightclub called The Red Zone. The event included dancing, Dark Shadows related videos, 1960s music, and a tour of the former studio.
1996 Dark Shadows Festival Cast Reunion: Conrad Bain, Donna Wandrey, Dennis Patrick, Denise Nickerson, Kathryn Leigh Scott, David Selby, Lara Parker, Michael Stroka, Diana Millay and Marie Wallace.
Dark Shadows In Locations
Although each episode of Dark Shadows was videotaped in a Manhattan ABC-TV Studio, several outside locations were seen on the series through film footage and photographic slides.
The Collinwood exterior is a mansion called Seaview Terrace in Newport, Rhode Island.
Newport is also the home of the Blue Whale exterior, which in real life is the Black Pearl Restaurant.
The Old House exterior, which burned to the ground in 1969, was the Spratt Mansion on the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York.
The Collinsport Inn exterior is the historic Griswold Inn in Essex, Connecticut.
The Collinsport Train Station is the Scarborough, NY train station.
Essex is also the site for several other Dark Shadows locations seen during the first year of the series. This includes the Police Station exterior, main street, and waterfront around Roger’s office at the Collins Cannery. The exterior for the Evans’ cottage is also in the area.
Literature for a house called Thomfield Hall in Thompson, Connecticut falsely states that the structure was used on Dark Shadows. The building has a few features similar to Spratt House, but no portion of Thomfield Hall was ever seen on the series.
Other actual locations seen on Da
rk Shadows were taken from photographs and books. In the case of Rose Cottage during the 1840 storyline, the exterior was nothing more than the miniature model that David Collins and Hallie Stokes found in 1970.
