When we made it home, Jody jumped in the shower and I was packing up the food to bring to Karley’s house. Karley, oh shit, I have to call her back. I ran to the car to retrieve my forgotten cell phone, and when I picked it up, I had five text messages and ten missed calls. I checked to see who had been blowing me up and they were all from Karley or Leon. I read the first message that said: Providence Hospital. I knew it was time to ride. I didn’t even bother to check anything else, I just ran in the house and screamed for Jody to bring his ass. Karley needed me. I grabbed the babies, threw them in their seats, and frantically searched for my purse. Jody came running from the shower, grabbing this and grabbing that in attempt to rush out the door.

We arrived at the hospital in no time and Jody dropped me off at the entrance, while he parked the car. I hurried inside to find out why my sister was in labor a whole month early. The minute I stepped inside, Ms. Ethel’s presence was so overpowering, I could smell her White Diamonds perfume. I got hot, sweat adorned my head like a crown. My breathing became shallow and that’s when the cute brown skin nurse came to my rescue.

  “Ma’am, ma’am? Are you ok?”

“I…I’m fine. I’m sorry, I just don’t know what just happened.”

“It’s ok. What brings you in today? What’s your emergency?

“It’s not me, my sister, Karley Mitchell. She is pregnant and...”

“Karley Mitchell,” the nurse interrupted. “That name sounds familiar. Are you Victoria White?”

  “Yes, how did you know?”

“No time for that, follow me please.”

I had no idea what the hell was going on, but I definitely wanted to find out. I followed her. I followed her down a short hallway and into and locker room. She pulled a set of keys from her pocket and opened a locker. She reached inside and ruffled through a stack of letters.

“Girl, I ain’t know when or if I would be the one to see you, but I’m glad I did. You know how long I have kept this envelope? Everybody been looking for you.”

“Everybody… envelope? What the hell is going on?”

“Look, all I know is we were given specific instructions to listen for your name or Karley Mitchell. I was told this envelope is for no other hands, but Victoria White’s.”

“Whatever, do you know how common that name is? I don’t want that envelope.”

“Chill girl,” the nurse said. This is your envelope. It even has your picture on it. The person that left it placed one in every single locker in here. Trust me, it’s you. I am sorry, but I can’t let you leave til you open it. Here.”

I took the envelope from the nurse and my hands shook in fear. I was so nervous, I dropped it twice and got a paper cut in the process of opening it. I removed the paper and began to read what was so important and nothing could have prepared me for the contents of that envelope.

  My Dearest Victoria,

If you are reading this letter, I have gone on to glory. Let me say this before anything else, I have grown to love you and those babies like my own flesh and blood. People come into your life for either a blessing or a lesson and I hope I have been both to you. What I need to say, I’m sure, will demolish your world, but remember, you must remain strong and care for you and those babies. Let me tell you a little story.

Ms. Ethel worked part time as a nurse for one of the attending doctors at the hospital. Karley Mitchell came in to visit for her initial exam when she found out she was expecting. As time went on, she brought in the father on each and every visit. I met you afterwards, then later found out that both you and Karley Mitchell had more in common than friendship. I hope I am not talking in circles, but in case I am, that girl’s baby’s father is Major White. I know, Baby, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, as it was for me too. I told you once before, it’s what you do with the information, once you find it that matters. Victoria, I know you are hurt right now and this is going to be a long road to recovery, but you have to do it. This journey is going to be tiresome, hurtful, and full of struggle, but I promise you, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I’m so sorry I had to tell you like this, but it’s high time you wake up, Girl. Contrary to what you believe, you are not Sleeping in Heaven, but rather Waking in Hell. You have to wake up Victoria, you got things that need to be done. Remember, help is a few words away. When you feel like you are alone, fall on your knees and go to the man upstairs for guidance. He will never leave nor forsake you. I love you!

  Ms. Ethel

I had never imagined that text was from Karley, my own sister. When, where, how and why were running through my head, but first, I needed to get to Leon.

“You ok?” The nurse asked as I stood from my seated position.

  “Yea, I…I…thank you.”

I had forgotten she was even in there, but I had no words for her. I was a woman on a mission and I took off out of that room like a bat out of Hell.

  ************

I made it to the nurse’s station on the labor and delivery floor and asked for Karley, but they said she was already in emergency surgery. Her blood pressure couldn’t be regulated and the baby’s heart rate was beginning to decrease, so they had to perform the procedure. I was told I would be able to wait in her room until there was more news. I accepted the offer and was pointed in the direction of room four eleven.

There, in that room, I found a distraught Leon. He had his back to the door and his face pressed against the window. The shaking in his shoulders confirmed what I thought, he was crying.

“Leon, Leon, talk to me. What’s going on?”

  Silence.

Leon turned to me, just as Jody and the babies entered the room, “My…my”…he stuttered. “My son looks just like Serenity.”

“Whhhaaaaat?” I screamed. “There is no way, Leon. Serenity looks just like…”

“That motherfucker right there!” Leon pointed to Jody, just as he entered the room.

Leon ran to Jody with his fists balled up and he was ready to put in work. I wanted so bad for Leon to pull his cap back, but not with my babies in his hands.

  “Leon, wait!”

“Nah Vic, this ain’t got shit to do with you,” Leon said.

“My babies either, Leon, let me get my babies. Then you can fuck his entire world three ways from Sunday, but please, let me get my babies.”

“What the fuck is going on?” Jody questioned.

“What the fuck is going on?” Leon repeated. “Since you don’t know, I’ma tell you like this. I told you if you ever crossed me wrong, I would fuck your world up. You didn’t listen. Not only did your trifling ass fuck my girl, but you knocked her up in the process. Jody, you ain’t shit and you ain’t gon’ never amount to shit. Victoria, get them babies and get the fuck outta dodge, cuz I don’t even want you to witness how bitches truly get fucked.”

I wanted so bad to get my kids and go, but my legs wouldn’t move. My voice had been long gone and honestly, I wanted to watch Jody get his. I hoped he killed his ass. I wanted to see him suffer, but I wasn’t so sure that was going to happen. Jody transformed in that hospital room. I didn’t even recognize him. His face held a mask of fury. His eyes were so dark, he looked possessed. Even his voice changed.

“Nah Homie, you talkin’ shit to me when yo bitch was in my ear ‘bout yo punk ass. What I won’t do is sit here and allow you to threaten me like you gon’ do sumn. You don’t want it, Leon.”

You want my help on this one? Truth is, you did fuck up, Jody. Let me help you fuck him up. M and M baby! M and M for life. All you gotta do is let me get at him. He done disrespected you in front of yo bitch. Please, please let me do this…for old time sake?

“I…told…yo bitch ass…don’t fuck wit me, Jody,” Leon said as he got closer to Jody and threw a right hook that caught him square in his pussy eaters.

Jody wiped the blood from his mouth and smiled the most wicked smile I had ever seen.

“I got yo bitch ass.” Jody picked up the hospital phone that was placed on the food tra
y and commenced to beating Leon with it.

Leon was blocking the phone as much as he could, but Jody was taggin’ that ass. All the commotion had awakened the babies and the minute Leon heard the piercing wail of Sincere, he went crazy. There were fists flying all over the place and the room was getting torn up by those two. I wanted to stop it, do something, but I chose to watch in satisfaction, instead.

The door was pushed open and a drugged Karley was being pushed into the room.

“What the fuck? I just got out of surgery, where my baby could have died, and y’all in here fighting like you ain’t got no sense. What the fuck is wrong wit y’all? And Vic, you sittin’ up in here watchin’ this shit like something on Lifetime.”

“Stop right the fuck there,” I said. “You got a whole lot of nerve comin’ up in here talking ‘bout me. They fighting over yo hoe ass. Yo tired, washed up, hoin’ ass.”

“Security, we need security in room four eleven right now. Now,” the nurse screamed into a small walkie-talkie.

With me and Karley going back and forth, the babies crying and Leon and Jody arguing, I never even noticed the gun that Jody had removed from the baby bag.

“Sir, please calm down, Sir. There is no need for any of this. Security is on the way. Please Sir, don’t make an irrational decision. Please put the gun down,” the nurse begged.

“Shut the fuck up, Bitch. This ain’t got shit to do with you, so you good. But these muthafuckas here…all of ‘em can get it.”

“Jody, put the gun down,” Karley said. “This me, Baby, put the gun down.”

Jody stared at Karley like he was trying to comprehend what she was saying, but even her voice couldn’t penetrate his thought process at that moment.

“Eenie, meenie, miney, mo,” Jody pointed the gun at each one of us, from the nurse to his brand new baby.

“Jody stop, these people are innocent. Please just stop,” I cried.

  “Shut the fuck up, Victoria.”

I heard the gun cock, one in the chamber. I never thought Jody would have the balls to actually shoot someone but there he was proving otherwise. As soon as security burst through the door, the gun went off.

“Noooooo,” I screamed right before the room went black.
