I would also like to thank my agent, Tina Bennett, who championed the creation of the narrative from its earliest iterations. Her insightful editorial eye was critical to birthing this book. I’m likewise grateful to her amazing team, Svetlana Katz and Dorothy Vincent, for all their help.
I owe a big thank-you to Susan Kamil, publisher of Random House, who was instrumental in shaping what was a very big and unruly manuscript into this book, and for believing in its message from the very beginning. I also appreciate the assistance of Kendra Harpster and Sam Nicholson, Susan’s wonderful editorial team.
Ashley and Rob Jansen opened their home and heart to me and let me hang out on their couch for hours. Thank you, Ashley and Rob, for your love and support.
I would also like to acknowledge my uncle, John Varty, who had an immense influence on me during my formative years. My time in the bush with him as a child was very special to me.
Our partners, the Taylors, were instrumental in the creation of Londolozi. Together we have built a professional bond and friendship that is special in today’s world. I am very grateful to Alan Taylor for his wise counsel and his unwavering support of my father and uncle.
I need to thank Kate Groch for her support and passion. She has been an inspiration to many, most particularly me. Kate’s continued work as the CEO of the Good Work Foundation brings profound change and hope to many people in the often forgotten parts of South Africa. An educator truly does shape the lives of individuals, and no one works harder at this than Kate. She and her mother, Gogo Mo Groch, are changing our country one person at a time.
My aunt Beejay has been with us through so much and is always so full of love and fun. I am thankful to have her in my life as an ever-present source of joy.
Finally, I would like to send great thanks to the entire Londolozi family, all of whom have had such a big influence on me. It’s a very special place, and we are very lucky to live there.
