  Chapter One

Julie Carruthers couldn’t stop staring into Maddox McCree’s dark eyes. She’d never physically been this close to him before, even though they’d known each other all their lives, and so she’d never noticed how thick his eyelashes were, or the fact that his grin was slightly lopsided. From a distance, that grin had always seemed more like a sneer, but up close it was sexy as hell.

She was at his very private, very exclusive dungeon in Racy Indiana merely to attend a surprise birthday party for one of her most challenging clients, Alexa Monahan. Maddox had agreed to host the party at the request of Chase Taylor and Luke Rodriguez, Alexa’s Doms.

“Do you need more punch?” he asked.

“No, I’m fine, thank you.” Maddox smelled warm, like a man should. All the leather he was wearing conjured up images of what this club must be like on any other night. Julie could easily imagine half-naked sweating bodies, some tied up and others doing the paddling or flogging. She could hear the soft cries of pleasure and pain, and the music in the background, pulsing softly.

Maddox leaned close, and Julie’s pulse raced. “I have something stronger to drink if you want.”

“I’m okay for now.” Right—just what she needed. Alcohol and Maddox McCree, standing close enough for her to see the flecks of gold deep in his eyes. Not a good idea, unless she wanted to make a damn fool of herself. The man was beyond gorgeous. She’d always known that, but this was the longest conversation they’d ever had. In fact, it was the only real conversation they’d ever had.

He glanced around. “Alexa seems happy here in Racy.”

“I agree. Chase and Luke are good for her.”

Maddox chuckled. “She’s good for them. Chase has been miserable for years. It’s good to see him smile again.”

“You and he are good friends, right?”

“We’ve become good friends over the years.”

  “How about Luke?”

“The first time he was here, it was obvious he wanted to be part of the lifestyle, but if he’s anything like his brother Rafe, women always saw him as more of a friend than as a potential lover, and certainly not as a Dom. I’m glad to see that Alexa changed all that for him.”

Julie already knew that about Luke from her sessions with Alexa, but she couldn’t tell Maddox. “When did you start this club, Maddox?” Julie had always wanted to visit a BDSM club. The very air in here made her nipples hum like someone had taped electrodes to them and turned on the current.

The gentle vibration radiated to her clit as she scanned the bondage equipment in the room. Even though no one was playing tonight and everyone was dressed in street clothes, Julie assumed that on any other night people would be dressed in fetish wear or leather like Maddox was wearing.

When she met his gaze again, the grin was back. “Over ten years ago. So why have I never seen you in here before now?”

Julie nearly choked on her punch. Was he kidding? Obviously he didn’t remember her very well from high school. She’d been unofficially voted The Girl Most Likely Never To Have Sex. She’d been practically invisible. “Um…I’m not sure, Maddox.”

Liar. She knew exactly why she’d never visited it before. Julie’s fantasies of being put over the knee of a man lik
e Maddox and spanked were secret. She rarely acknowledged them herself. Only in her fevered imagination did she dress like she imagined most of these women here did on any other night. In her dreams she was able to achieve an orgasm with a mere touch. Her fantasies were raw and decadent. Her real life, however, revolved around her clients—nothing more.

“What do you think of it? How does it compare to other clubs you’ve been to?”

Was he teasing her? The light in his eyes twinkled, or that could have been a reflection. He stood so close she could feel the heat from his body. What would it be like to lie skin-to-skin with a man that warm? Julie mentally shook away the thought.

Maddox McCree didn’t just own this club. He was a Dom in it. He lived a life that was foreign and mysterious to her, but one that she’d had more than a passing curiosity about for most of her adult life. But Maddox had never even been remotely interested in her, and he certainly wouldn’t be now. “Maddox, I’ve never been in a BDSM club before.”

  “No shit. Really?”

She didn’t know whether to laugh or walk away. It was impossible to tell if he was mocking her or genuinely surprised. For a trained psychologist who had graduated at the top of her class from Northwestern University, she certainly was having trouble getting a handle on this incredibly sexy man.

Had he looked this good in high school? Yes. But cheerleader types had also constantly surrounded him. Not exactly the crowd Julie had run with. In fact, she hadn’t run with a crowd at all. She’d been a perpetual loner, preferring books to people and inventing a rich fantasy life to compete with the real-life conversations that left her feeling desperate and lonely. “Really, Maddox. This is my first time. I guess you could say I’m a club virgin.” Jesus H. Why the fuck had she just said that? The punch was nonalcoholic, wasn’t it?

He chuckled, but it wasn’t a derisive laugh. Instead it suggested satin blindfolds and leather riding crops. It was hot in here. Or was that merely her hormones raging completely out of control?

“Well, since you’re a virgin to all this, why don’t we stop standing against this wall and take a look around? I’d love to show you the rest of the house.”

Julie finished her punch, suddenly wishing she’d taken him up on the offer of something stronger. Then again, what harm could it do to walk around the house with him? “Okay. I’d love to see it.”

  * * * *

Maddox couldn’t figure out what was so different about Julie now. She’d certainly aged well, not that thirty-five was old—hardly. But that wasn’t the only reason he couldn’t seem to take his eyes off her. She’d always been a pretty girl, although her hair could be a bit less extreme. Maybe if she took out the ponytail and let it hang loose? Did she have any idea just how blue her eyes were? They reminded him of the sky on a hot summer day. When he left this monstrosity of a house in the woods long enough to gaze up at it, that was.

“Let’s go then.” When he placed a hand on her arm just above the elbow, she flinched a bit, but it wasn’t a gesture that said ‘Don’t touch me.’ Rather, it was one of surprise. Her skin was warm underneath the long sleeve of her dress. It was a dress that would have been more appropriate at a faculty dinner, not a birthday party. He stole a quick glimpse of her ass swaying underneath it. Even tweed couldn’t conceal the suggestion that she was hiding a very sexy body under that garment.

He led her into one of the downstairs parlors off the main hall, where more food and drink had been set up. People sat or stood in small groups, talking. “I keep these closed off most nights.”

  “The decorating is beautiful.”

  “Thank you.”

  “Did you do it yourself?”

He smiled at the idea that she thought he had any decorating skills. “I have a confession to make.” As he leaned closer, he caught a whiff of her perfume, flowery and light. Something musky would suit her better. “I hired a firm in Chicago to do it. And I copied a lot of ideas from various clubs there.”

As she glanced up at him, the briefest flash of the most molten lust he’d ever seen in any woman’s eyes caught him off guard. It was gone so quickly he wondered if he’d imagined it, but knew he hadn’t. Julie had been sending him mixed signals since he’d first spotted her and had strolled over to say hello.

“Is that legal?” she asked. When she grinned, it lit up her face. Did she know that? Julie had been one of the quietest, most unobtrusive people he remembered from school. Even as a kid she’d been almost nonexistent, and every time he’d walked or ridden his bike past her house she’d either be sitting on a low branch in the large maple in her front yard, or curled up in a wicker rocker on the front porch, reading a book.

But how could he have missed the fire lurking underneath that cool gaze and those clothes that had clearly been chosen in order to hide her body? Or, had the fire been a recent addition? “Oh, I’d never do anything illegal, Julie.” He leaned closer, just to see how she’d react. “At least, not in public.”

When he winked at her, he swore he felt the muscles in her arm tremble slightly, as if a shudder had just gone through her. There was a slight softening in her eyes and a quick intake of breath. Was it his imagination that her shoulders rose and fell a bit quicker now than they had earlier? If he placed his fingers on the inside of her wrist would he feel her pulse quicken?

“The only other rooms down here to show you are the kitchen and a library.”

A huge smile lit her face. Bingo.

“May I assume that smile is for the library and not the kitchen? Would you like to see it?”

  “Yes, very much.”

Maddox led her to a locked door and took his keys out of his pocket. “I have some rare editions in here so I don’t allow people to simply wander around.”

“I can understand that.” Her voice had turned breathy. Either she was thirsty or turned on by the thought of a room full of books.

When he opened the door and ushered her inside, she gasped. He closed and locked the door behind them because he didn’t want anyone to disturb them. “Do you like it?”

Julie turned in a slow circle, her lips slightly parted. Maddox leaned against the edge of a table, his gaze roving over that tweed monstrosity of a dress. Where had she bought that thing? She was actually wearing hose. Who did that anymore? And her pumps reminded him of something you’d see on the feet of Hillary Clinton.

“Maddox…it’s amazing. I feel like Belle in Beauty and the Beast.”

That made him laugh, because once she said it he realized that was exactly who she looked like, mousy brown hair pulled back in a ponytail and all. The only thing missing was the curl that kept falling into her eyes. “Four thousand seven hundred and twenty-nine.”

She gave him a puzzled look. “Excuse me?”

“That’s how many books are in here. Everyone asks.”

  “Did you count them yourself?”

“Yes.” He watched her thumb through several books, and then he asked if she’d like to see the upstairs of the house. The question hung in the air like a palpable thing that Maddox could reach out and snatch, only he didn’t want to. He wanted to let it linger a while longer.

“Sure.” Sure. It was one of those words women said when they really meant one of two things: “No, I really don’t want to do that,” or “Yes, I really want to do that, but I don’t want you to know how much I want to.” Which did Julie mean right now? He guessed they could probably spend hours in this room and it wouldn’t be enough for her, but he wanted to show her the private playrooms upstairs to get a feel for whether or not she wanted more than simply a tour.

“Let’s go then.” As they ascended the staircase, Maddox glanced at her. “You know, you can come over anytime you want and borrow a book.”

“Seriously?” Her expression was one of genuine surprise.

“Of course. It’s not like you’d be able to steal one, after all. I know where you work.” He winked at her, and this time he actually saw her slight tremble. She also nearly missed a
step and fell. As he reached out instinctively to catch her, his hand accidentally brushed across her ass. Even the tweed couldn’t hide her firm, round ass cheeks. Maddox groaned inwardly as an image of her bent over with that ass presented to him for a good paddling rose in his mind.

  Chapter Two

Julie had to bite back a moan as Maddox’s hand grazed her ass cheeks. She was embarrassed enough that she’d nearly tripped simply because he’d winked at her, but his touch sent her mind rocketing to dark, decadent places. What would it feel like to have him use one of those floggers she’d spotted downstairs on her? Would it sting and burn, or would the pain be mixed with exquisite pleasure?

The upstairs hallway branched off in the middle like a cross, conjuring up images of medieval castles and twisting, secret corridors. They passed both the branches and headed toward the end of the hallway where Julie spotted a second staircase. It was quiet up here. Plush carpeting and damask wallpaper gave it an ambiance that suggested old Victorian drawing rooms and clandestine alcoves where secret lovers could steal a kiss.

He opened one of the doors and ushered Julie inside. Just before he closed the door behind them, she caught a quick glimpse of a bed with something attached to it, but once the room was thrust back into near-darkness, all she could see was the glow of a night-light in what must be a bathroom off to the right.

She felt his body directly behind her, and let out a sigh that would have been a moan if she hadn’t caught it in time. When he placed a warm hand on her shoulder, it was all she could do not to turn around and kiss him.
