“For the record,” he said, “I’m sorry too.”
They embraced slowly and kissed fiercely, forgetting where they were for that one, precious moment.
“Where have you been?” she whispered.
“Away,” he said, brushing a tear from her cheek. “In more ways than one. But I’m back.”
Lauren rested her head on his shoulder. She recognized Scott by the front door, and he gave her a curt acknowledgment that, yes he was here, and no he wasn’t going to get in the way of their tender moment. The grateful smile on her face melted when she noticed the broken windows, and that no one else emerged from the house.
“Where’s Mom and Dad?” she said.
Rick shook his head gravely, and Lauren’s eyes welled with fresh tears. “I should have been here,” she cried.
“You did what you had to do,” said Rick.
“I know, but...”
Rick put a finger to Lauren’s lips. “It’s done. We’ve both made mistakes, but we’re here now. Got to focus on the future.”
Lauren wanted to rage and shout. She wanted to scream at the sky for the damage it had wrought. For what it had done and what it had taken away. Getting a grip of herself, she took a deep breath and wiped her cheeks. “Yeah,” she said. “The future.”
She looked around. At her children. At April. At the abandoned, leaf blown street.
“The future,” she murmured again.
It was going to come, now matter what. It didn’t care what she thought about it. Her feelings and fears weren’t about to make it change its mind. Nor its course. No other option but to prepare for it.
No other option at all.
“Winter’s coming,” she said. “Do you think we’ll be ready?”
“Oh yeah.”
Lauren nodded slowly in approval, her mind made up. “Okay. We’ll talk more later. Let’s get the gear out of the truck.”
