"I’m ready for spawklas," she says, with a broom between her legs, fireworks in hand, and about half of the makeup I own caked on her face.
"You’re definitely ready for something, Luna. I’m just not quite sure if it’s a pageant stage or a corner."
I nudge Emmett’s arm and huff. "Emmett Fontaine! Don’t talk about my baby that way," I say, although my words lack indignation. He promptly tosses me onto the couch as I wrestle my way free, only to be caught again. Luna joins in on the fun, wailing on Emmett with his very own present as she giggles hysterically.
"Sparkler time!" Emmett hollers at the top of his lungs, and Luna squeals before darting out the front door. He lowers his lips to mine and brushes softly. "Good thing she’s easily distracted, or else she’d catch me kissing her mom Happy New Year."
I grab him by his beanie cap and crush his lips to mine. "Happy New Year, Emmett."
"Happy New Year, my sweet Annie."
"Doooooofffffuuuuuusssss!" she calls from the front porch, her patience obviously wearing thin.
Emmett’s lips curve into a heart-stopping smile. He chuckles, pulling us both off the couch toward the door. "It’s gonna be a good year," he says, emotion clogging his throat. "The best one yet."
And when he stoops to Luna’s level, and she wraps her arms around his neck, I know with the utmost certainty, it already is.
