  Chapter 1

  Reggie

I jumped a little as the stack of folders were slammed onto my desk.

“Where's the the report I asked for? I shouldn't have to ask for it twice- there are plenty of girls out there who'd love to have this job.”

I hit send a little harder than I had to before replying.

“Just sending it over now Mr. Weber.”

  Asshole.

  “About time.”

The door to his office shut with a hard click.

Taking the folders, I started organizing them and getting notes ready for his meeting later today.

I didn't mind the work I did as a secretary. It wasn't the most exciting, but I took pride in doing a good job.

And I knew I did a damn good job despite Sir Asshole's constant put downs.

But somehow, knowing that only made me angrier.

Trying to put him out of my mind, I got back to work.

Going through my inbox, I took care of everything that I could handle and forwarded the rest to Weber's email.

I paused as I reached a subject line that said OPEN ME NOW.

From Fran. She was always on the dramatic side. Probably another cat video.

  Shrugging, I clicked on it.

Evan Roth's looking for another personal assistant! Here's your chance to escape The Asshole!

Evan Roth was the CEO of Equilibrium Enterprises. How I was supposed to land a job with someone that high up in the company was beyond me.

Even if he couldn't seem to keep an assistant for longer than a month. There was actually a cross departmental pool going on regarding how long this last assistant was going to last.

  I guess I didn't win again.

But really, by all accounts he'd seemed like the hard-as-nails type. I'd thought he'd at least last a month.

I clicked on the link she'd posted in the body.

Education, typing skills, yada, yada, yada...I skimmed through the usual requirements until I got to the bottom.

Need someone who can start immediately. Must be available evenings and weekends. Willing to travel if needed. Must sign confidentiality agreement.

Didn't exactly sound like a dream job.

Then I saw the compensation a couple of lines down.

Wow. That would be a nice upgrade.

Tapping my pen on the desk next to my keyboard, I leaned back as I considered the screen.

I hated my boss, but that wasn't exactly unique. I'd been looking for another job on the side for a few weeks now. But I could be going from the frying pan into the fire with this position.

I wonder what he did to make them all quit so quickly.

Especially considering the fact that he was very easy on the eyes. Although I'd only seen pictures since Weber's office was in the back of the building and I wasn't often in areas where I might see him.

“Reggie! I need some coffee! And the font for this report is all wrong. Fix it so it doesn't look so horrendous.”

He grumbled something uncomplimentary under his breath as he closed his door again.

  Right.

  Applying for the job.

At least I could be paid more even if Evan Roth turned out to be a douche.

I got everything I needed to get done before Asshole went to his meeting. Then I opened the link again and filled out the application.

Since it was within the same company, it didn't take long to finish.

Then I got down to a space at the bottom where my current supervisor could add a recommendation.

  Well, that wasn't happening.

Might hurt my chances, but no way I was asking for a recommendation when I might be stuck in this job. I'm sure he'd find ways to torment me about it before finding an excuse to fire me.

Skipping that part, I clicked the submit button.

  There went nothing.

Checking the clock, I started packing my things.

I turned to the computer to shut it down when it dinged with an incoming email.

With a sigh, I sat back down to check it. Sometimes Weber would send me things to finish last minute. And they were always needed urgently.

Opening the window, I saw the bold text of the new email.

Open immediately. In regard to personal assistant position.

  Wow. That was fast.

  Probably an automated reply.

Clicking on it, I leaned forward to read it.

Please come to my office when you receive this. If you've gone home for the evening already, this position isn't for you and you may disregard this message. />
  -Evan Roth

  Really?

I re-read the short message to make sure I wasn't mistaken.

But it had the same acerbic bite to it that it had the first time I'd read it.

Second thoughts were knocking on my brain while I stared at the screen.

I thought I'd have some time to at least mentally prepare for an interview, if I actually got that far. I didn't think I'd be running to talk to the freaking CEO immediately!

I could ignore it and pretend I'd already gone home. And come back to work for Weber in the morning.

  Ugh.

Or I could go see the man. It wasn't like I was going to get the job anyway, not with the massive amount of applications he'd be getting with the bottom line being advertised.

  What the hell.

Might as well go balls to the wall.

Shutting down my computer, I shouldered my over-sized bag and made my way over to the lobby. I'd only really seen it during my interview. Now I just used the back entrance because it was always less crowded.

It was well past five, so there weren't many people still hanging on at their offices and cubicles as I walked passed.

The lobby was still as awe-inspiring now as it was the first time I'd seen it.

Dark green marble with veins of cold running through it overlaid the wall behind the main desk. The floors were a beige marble, the columns a white stone with gray veins running through.

Along with the fountains, the rich oil paintings, and the glossy plants, I could only describe it as palatial.

The space in front of the bank of elevators was empty, now that official business hours were over.

Getting into the empty elevator, I stretched to get some of the kinks out of my neck and shoulders.

I watched the lighted numbers at the top of the elevator doors, getting more and more nervous with each floor I went up.

  What was I thinking?

Evan Roth chewed up assistants and spit them out on a regular basis. Why would I be any different?

He'd probably take one look at me and laugh me out of his office.

OK, I was now firmly in the deep end.

Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm down.

Alright, if worst came to worst, I'd still have my crappy job with Weber.

  It would be fine.

  Really.

The doors opened at the top floor and I had the urge to mash the door close button and go back down.

But there was a secretary staring at me inquiringly from a shiny desk in direct line of sight of the elevator bank.

Forcing a smile on my face, I walked out in what I hoped was a confident manner.

The rest of the building was nice, but the Executive floor was on another level. The carpet was plush under my worn flats, the palette soothing neutrals. My eyes were drawn to a massive painting of a forest that took up almost the entirety of one of the walls.

  “Hello, can I help you?”

I forced my eyes away from the attraction of the life-like forest and to the secretary's dark eyes.

She must have been in her forties, her skin pale and smooth, her prematurely snow white bob cut in an asymmetric line that I would never be able to pull off. Her fire engine red lips finished off the look.

“Yes. Um, I'm here to see Mr. Roth? I was told to come up right away?”

  “One moment please.”

She gave me a cool, professional smile before typing something into her computer.

Yeah, well, I didn't feel like I belonged here either, so it was a little difficult for me to get mad at her about her condescending manner.

The phone on the desk next to her rang and she picked it up.

  “Yes, sir? Of course.”

Hanging up, she gave me a curious look.

  “Down the hall, first right.”

  “Thank you.”

I walked passed her, giving her outfit a quick once over from behind.

A pale pink pantsuit with sky high heels.

Heels weren't my thing. At five feet eight inches, I didn't feel a need to be taller. And those things were obviously made to hobble women.

  So we'd be easier prey.

Smiling to myself, I walked down the hall.

There were more paintings like the forest one near the elevators. I slowed a little at one that included a waterfall, the lush greenery around it creating a serene oasis. The artist had managed to make the water appear translucent and the green of the leaves glossy with health.

The creak of a floorboard had me whipping around and moving down the hall faster.

Right. CEO waiting for you Reggie.

When I turned right, the short hall ended with a mahogany door. It gleamed as if it had just been polished.

  It probably had.

Pulling down my sweater, I wiped my hands on my slacks and knocked.

I frowned a little after taking in a deep breath in an effort to settle my stomach.

There was a hint of something...

  “Come in.”

  Go time.

I opened the door, stepping inside with my heart beating fast enough that I was surprised it didn't just knock right out of my chest.

The room was large, with high ceilings and spotless cream-colored carpet. One wall was taken up by a painting that had to be done by the same artist who'd done the others I'd been admiring outside.

Evan Roth stood behind his desk, looking out the large bank of windows that showed a gorgeous view of the city.

I didn't realize he was so tall.

And that he took up so much...space.

His broad shoulders, wedge-shaped torso and long, lean legs were all showcased by his suit. Probably created custom by a team of wisened old men in Italy.

He turned to me, a polite smile on his face as he crossed the room.

Pictures didn't do him justice, if that was possible.

He had the kind of hard, masculine face that wasn't right for modeling, but that women loved. His eyes were a little startling against the deep tan of his skin and the almost blue black of his hair, cut in a conservatively short style. But those eyes would have drawn attention even without the contrast because they didn't match

One was a bright, cobalt blue and the other a mossy green.

Oh, and he was a werewolf.

  My heart almost stopped.

As he got closer, he extended a hand, his eyes locked with mine.

“You must be Reggie Dean. I'm Evan Roth.”

“Yes. It's nice to meet you,” I said faintly, letting his larger hand envelop mine. His hand firm and warm, his handshake business-like but gentle, as if he was used to tempering his strength among mere mortals.

  I was in deep shit.

  Evan

I gestured for her to take a seat as I circled around my desk.

Good handshake. A little damp, but that was to be expected in an impromptu interview. I liked catching candidates off balance to see how they reacted to stressful situations.

Reggie Dean wasn't what I'd been expecting. Though I didn't know why that was.

She was tall for a woman, but still considerably shorter than me. Probably a few inches shy of six feet. Her light brown hair was pulled up in a bun that couldn't quite be called messy, her dark brown eyes sharp behind a pair of tortoise shell glasses perched on her slender nose. A nose sprinkled with freckles that extended out a little way across the tops of her cheeks.

Her mouth was bare, her lips a soft looking pale pink that went with her coloring.

Her curvy body was clad in a pair of dark slacks and a cream-colored sweater, her feet in sensible flats. She didn't have on any jewelry that I could see.

I took everything in at a glance.

The little things often hinted at the person underneath.

Reggie Dean appeared to be a no-frills type. I was guessing she was extremely competent at her job and didn't suffer fools lightly. Which probably made the last year at this company particularly grating for her considering she
was currently working for Weber.

He was unfortunately unpleasant, but good enough at his job that he wasn't let go.

Not that I was one to speak. My office was practically a revolving door of personal assistants. Finding someone who could hack the work load was proving difficult.

“Why do you want this job?”

“Seems like a challenge. And I like to work, so the long hours wouldn't be an issue for me.”

I watched her body language, the tone of her voice, how her scent changed.

Not lying. But not the whole truth either.

  “Any other reasons?” I prodded.

She grimaced a little, the expression there and gone in a split second. I probably wouldn't have noticed it at all if I hadn't been paying such close attention.

“My current supervisor and I don't exactly get along.”

  Not surprising.

“If you don't get this job, do you plan on leaving the company?” I asked curiously.

I'd already decided to hire her. She wasn't quaking in her boots at meeting me and she wasn't sizing me up like she wanted to try me on for size.

It was surprising how many women seemed to think the way into my bed was through working for me.

Reggie was an experienced secretary, so she would be good at that part of the job at least.

And she was pleasant to look at, but not distractingly so.

And currently, she looked a little uncomfortable at the line of questioning.

  “Maybe,” she finally admitted.

“Hmm.” I leaned back in my chair. Her eyes met mine and then moved up a little so she wasn't looking directly into them.

  Interesting.

Usually only other wolves followed the instinct to avoid eye contact with dominants.

I took in a deep breath, curious if I'd missed something.

But her scent was simply clean, female, with a hint of the shampoo and soap she used. No perfume.
