44 Notes: Compare the average US birth rate of 29.4 per 1,000 fifteen- to nineteen-year-old women to the rate in Rwanda (34), India (33), Turkey (31), Kazakhstan (30) and Vietnam (29). According to the CDC, these states have the highest teen birth rates:

  • New Mexico (47.5)—most comparable to Peru (51), Yemen (47), Puerto Rico (47), Barbados (48) and Indonesia (48)

  • Oklahoma (47.3)

  • Mississippi (46.1)

  • Arkansas (45.7)

  • Texas (44.4)

States with the lowest teen birth rates per 1,000 teens aged fifteen-nineteen:

  • New Hampshire (13.8)—most comparable to Australia (12), Hungary (12), Poland (12), Portugal (13) and Canada (14)

  • Massachusetts (14.1)

  • Connecticut (15.1)

  • Vermont (16.3)

  • New Jersey (16.7)

If we go by ethnicity, there were 27.4 teen births per 1,000 white women, 44 for black women, 46.3 for Hispanic women, 34.9 for American Indian or Alaska Natives, and 9.7 for Asian or Pacific Islanders. The percent changes for each ethnicity since 2000 are: white—37 percent reduction (from 43.2); black—43 percent reduction (from 77.4); Hispanic—47 percent reduction (from 87.3); American Indian or Alaska Native—40 percent reduction (from 58.3); and Asian or Pacific Islander—53 percent reduction (from 20.5).
