She laughed softly. “Okay, sure, if you insist.”
“Please, have a seat,” I motioned to the guest chairs in front of my desk. She sat properly, crossing her legs as her skirt traveled slightly up her thighs. “So, I hear that you are working toward the 500 hour Yoga certification. It’s an excellent program.”
She crossed her hands that rested on her lap. “Yes sir. I’m working on the last two classes before I am certified.”
I nodded, satisfied. She was truly mesmerizing. “According to your paperwork, you’re obtaining the credentials at a local community college.”
“Yes.” She answered confidently but guardedly.
“Have you ever participated in any of the Yoga classes at the YMCA? I teach many of them there. It’s actually where I got my start in this business.”
She furrowed her eyebrows. “Unfortunately, I never have attended anything at the YMCA. I’ve always been involved through school and personal practice.”
I didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable. “That’s still wonderful! How would you feel about observing me teach a class every Tuesday evening? I believe it would be a great opportunity for you.” I didn’t know why I as offering such a thing. I hadn’t offered any of my other employees extra assistance with their outside interests and goals.
She stuttered. “Oh, um, sure! That would be awesome! Only, I can’t really add that to my budget right now? That is, if it costs anything.”
“Nope! It won’t cost you a thing. In fact, I have some free time now to show you around the YMCA building. I have some meetings after lunch but am free now. I’m also confident that my classes won’t interfere with your work. You were hired to be my assistant, so keeping me happy will keep you paid. Don’t worry about leaving the office on your first day. We will be back within the hour. It’s just down the street.”
Her eyes widened slightly. “Oh, okay. That sounds nice,” she smiled tentatively.
“Janet!” I hollered from my desk. Alexis sat still and silent. Janet came quickly. “I’m about to take Alexis on a tour of the YMCA building. We will be back within the hour. Can you make sure that those brochures printed up by the time we return? I think Alexis’ first task will be placing them in envelopes and stamping them.”
She looked confused. “Yes, sir. I will try to have them prepared for your return. Do I need to call your driver?”
“Thank you, Janet. No, I think we will be fine walking.” Janet glanced down at Alexis’ heels and back to me. “Oh! Alexis, I didn’t think about your heels. Would you prefer if I called my driver?”
“I can walk just fine in these. They’re comfortable pumps,” she answered shyly.
That decision made, I escorted her down the street to the YMCA and showed her around the building. Whether I wanted to admit it or not, I felt more important walking next to such a beautiful young woman.
Chapter 3
On my short drive home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how handsome Ashton Jackson was in person! Frames filled with magazine covers and DVD covers lined his office walls. With his salt-and-pepper hair and shadowed whiskers, he looked like George Clooney’s hotter cousin! Jessica pulled into the parking lot the same time that I did.
“Well, well, well, if it’s not the new working girl,” she smirked while getting out of her car. “How did it go?”
I couldn’t stop smiling. “He’s hot. Oh my, he’s hot.” I was nearly breathless in telling her.
“What?”
“Ashton Jackson is so hot. This morning, I had to report straight to his office--like, his personal office! As it turns out, I’m going to be his personal assistant.”
Jessica look confused while she unlocked the front door for both of us. “Wait a minute. I thought you were hired to be another office assistant?”
“Are an office assistant and a personal assistant not the same thing?” I answered with a quirky smile.
“Okay, we’ve got to look this man up. I have to see what he looks like.” Jessica started to scroll through her smartphone. “I’m sure that a billionaire will have a business profile on social media somewhere.”
I watched as she researched. I wanted to see the look on her face for when she found him. Her eyebrows lifted.
“Did you find him?” I asked eagerly.
“Oh my…is this him?” she handed me her phone.
“Yep, that’s him.” I smiled hugely. The picture she found displayed was from the cover of 2014’s RichBiz Magazine. He was the newest billionaire. I couldn’t stop staring at the picture.
“Girl, I had it first,” Jessica chuckled, taking the phone back from me. “If you don’t want him, I will take him. I don’t care if I’m twenty years younger! The dude could retire and model for a living. Is he still hiring?” she joked, and we both laughed.
“I found him first,” I teased.
“Oh hush. You’ve got Seth!”
“Whatever. Seth won’t be in class with me and Ashton tomorrow night. He invited me to sit in and observe.”
Jessica’s eyes widened. “Oooooh.”
“Yeah…and perhaps I’m fluffing things up, but he asked that I call him Ashton. I noticed that the secretary, Janet, calls him Mr. Jackson.”
“He’s into you,” Jessica said after a moment. “Wow, girl. Wow.”
The next day, I spent the work hours with the other ladies and learned the basics of everything. From printing daily sales reports and revenue to typing data into spreadsheets, I learned a great deal about the daily routine. Everyone seemed friendly enough, and I actually enjoyed the whole process. At four o’clock, Janet approached me.
“Now, Mr. Jackson requests that you meet him at the YMCA by half-past four. He is out of the office now and will go straight there,” she instructed.
“Okay,” I answered but made it obvious that I had further thoughts. “He told me to call him Ashton. I feel uncomfortable doing so if everyone else calls him Mr. Jackson. Surely he has told you the same? What should I do?” I wasn’t trying to cause trouble; I just didn’t know what to do. The last thing I needed was to become involved in an awkward situation at my new job.
“I can’t speak for everyone else, but I wasn’t given the option to call him anything other than Mr. Jackson. He didn’t tell me what to call him. Around here, we do as we are told. If he asked me to do something, I would do it.” Her words were sharp as if envy was trying to surface but she struggled to suppress it.
“Oh okay. Thank you, Janet,” I smiled awkwardly. I grabbed my purse and car keys and left the building.
People were starting to congregate in the YMCA rooms. Most of them seemed to be the after-work crowds, all seeking to get into better shape. I found Ashton in one of the group fitness with other people already prepared to practice Yoga. I quietly walked in and sat in the chair closest to the door.
He smiled and came to me. “Did you bring your mat and change of clothes?”
“No, I didn’t. That completely slipped my mind. I thought I would only be observing. I’m sorry. Would you like me to run home and get them?” I felt like such a fool! Why did I not think of grabbing my Yoga material while observing his class?
“Please, don’t worry about it. Just watch and observe. You can practice the breathing techniques if you like.” His smile was warm and inviting. He patted me softly on the shoulder and returned to his mat. I could’ve easily been mesmerized by his charm but forced myself to keep it under control.
I couldn’t believe that I was watching the DVD Yoga star teaching class. He was ten feet from me and it felt as if I were living a dream. He was so close that I could smell his cologne and see the small beads of sweat form over his brow. I especially enjoyed the view while he formed into the Downward Dog position--his backside was as toned as I’d imagined.
At the end of the class, he spoke in his incredibly soothing voice. “Now, let’s breathe everything back into the center. Focus.” Everyone in the class appeared to be perfectly relaxed and calm. He truly had a talent for t
eaching and utilizing the techniques of Yoga. I remained still so as to not disturb everyone while they chanted their mantra and breathed. After a few minutes, everyone thanked him, rolled their mats, socialized and left.
“You were amazing!” I complimented him. “It’s easy to see why you’ve become so successful. Thank you for inviting me.”
He walked over to me, grinning widely while rolling his mat. “Thank you and you’re welcome. Next week, you can bring your mat and join me.” His big brown eyes were gleaming and bright. It seemed as if he were staring straight through me. The chemistry between us was undeniable.
“Sure thing,” I replied. An awkward silence grew between us. I stuttered, “Um, would you like me to help you tidy up?” He looked perplexed. I realized the naughty misinterpretation belatedly. “The room? Would you like for me to help you tidy up the room?”
He lightly chuckled. “The janitor will come in and vacuum for me. Otherwise, I just need to grab my things, and we are good to go.” He bent over and pick up the duffle bag and old stereo. “So, um, how would you feel about joining me for a cup of coffee? Do you drink coffee?”
His question surprised me. Was this truly happening? “What’s the occasion? I don’t drink coffee, but I drink hot tea,” I smiled.
“No special occasion. I just thought I’d invite you along as I need a good cup of Joe.”
I tried to open the door for him since his hands were full; however, he tried to open the door as well, and we bumped into one another. My face rubbed against his chest unexpectedly. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” I quickly apologized.
“Don’t apologize. A lady should never have to open a door when a gentleman is around,” he said smoothly. His words slipped off his tongue like sugar. Our eyes met again and the tension started to rise. I recognized the chemistry and worked hard to dispel it.
“You’re very polite. Thank you,” I answered, gracefully stepping through the doorway.
Chapter 4
Janet and Marge were acting very suspicious. Every time I would turn my back, I could hear their faint whispers and snickers. Once, I even caught them chatting while glaring at me.
“Where should I put this file?” I asked Janet, interrupting their private conversation.
She stared at me with a snobby air. “Just give it to me, and I will put it in the proper place. Thank you.” Her words were almost cold. I stared at Marge, who just grinned and turned her face the other way.
“Okay, thank you. I finished stuffing the envelopes. What would you like me to do next?” I asked politely. I was still trying to learn the job, but she ensured that I felt left hanging, begging her for things to do.
Before she could reply, a deeper voice spoke up. “Alexis? I actually need to see you in my office. I have some things for you to do.” Ashton was all smiles as he stood behind me.
“Well, there you go. He has something for you to do,” Janet retorted. She tucked the file underneath her arm and walked off. Marge quietly disappeared into the opposite direction.
“Don’t worry about them,” Ashton spoke under his breath. “They’re just jealous of you. You’re the prettiest girl in the office, and I’ve probably given you more attention than them. They’ll get over it.”
“Oh?” I responded. I didn’t want to cause controversy. Sure, I had a small crush on him, but what girl wouldn’t?
“I will give them a pay raise and hopefully that will appease them. Follow me to my office. I have some documents for you to sign,” he grinned. I followed him and tried to not stare at his cute butt. The way it swiveled in his dress pants was quite attractive. Shaking my head in disbelief, I tried to brush off my thoughts. He was my boss, and I didn’t think it was right to pay such close attention to his handsome features. He opened the door for me. “Just have a seat anywhere you would like,” he grinned.
“I suppose I shouldn’t sit in the CEO’s chair,” I joked. I immediately regretted my comment. What was I thinking?
“Hmm…I wouldn’t write you up for that, but it would be slightly backwards. I’m the boss here,” he laughed while closing the door. Embarrassed by my own comment, I sat down, blushing. He sighed and relaxed into his leather chair. “Those girls out there may get envious of this, but that’s their problem, I suppose.” He started to flip through some papers. I had no clue what he was speaking about. “There it is.” He placed the paper in front of him and clasped his hands over it. “Would you be interested in joining me on set later this week? I am scheduled to film another DVD of Yoga sessions. I believe it would be a great experience for you.”
I couldn’t believe he was offering me such a wonderful opportunity! He had already invited me to attend his class on Tuesday nights. Now this? What did I do that was so different from the other ladies? “Oh, wow,” I stuttered, unsure of what to say. “That would be awesome! I don’t understand what I’ve done to earn all of these amazing opportunities!”
“Let’s just say that I see plenty of potential in you. This could be you someday. You’re clearly intelligent, goal-oriented and beautiful. Your look that is perfect for television.” His smile was alluring.
“Thank you. I truly appreciate the kindness,” I replied. His eyes were vibrant with life and pizazz. I had to remind myself that he was twice my age.
“No need to thank me. I believe that you will be a huge asset to my company. This is a release form that I need you to sign. It basically says that you won’t talk about anything you see on set. If you would read it over and sign it at the bottom for me,” he handed me the paper.
“Um, where is the filming taking place?” I asked in a shyly. I didn’t want him to think I was ungrateful, but I couldn’t afford to leave the area on such short notice.
“The filming will be at the YMCA here in Hillsboro . As my personal assistant, you would be a valuable asset. I may have you answer my business calls, certain emails, etc. Which--that reminds me--I need you to sign another form.” He pulled out another sheet of paper covered in legalese. “This form states that you won’t disclose or share any information without my consent. It’s the information that you may see in my emails or phone calls or anything else that is business or personal.” Placing the paper next to the other one, I looked over them. “I suppose you will need a pen,” he smiled.
“Take your time. I always read every letter, symbol and word when it comes to contracts,” I grinned. The papers made me somewhat nervous. I needed to get over that.
He checked everywhere for a pen. Finally, pulling one from his coat pocket, he clicked it and set it by my hand. “There. No worries. I like that you read every word. That proves to me that I’m making the right choice. You’re thorough and trustworthy. And pretty.” Before I could reply to his last thought, he turned around and quickly changed the subject. “It’s a beautiful day today.” He stood by the window and peeked through the white blinds.
“Yes, it is,” I spoke slowly, trying to process his words. I couldn’t believe how many times he had told me that I was pretty. It felt nice.
“Do you have class this evening?” he asked as if he were a longtime friend.
“I do,” I tried to sound laid back.
He put his hands in his pants pocket. “Nice. If any of the activities that you’re doing for me will count as extra credit, you’re more than welcome to use them. I will give a good recommendation.”
I had just finished with signing the forms. “Thank you so much.” I didn’t know what else to say. He was offering so many kind things! “Here is the paperwork, read and signed.”
He turned around from the window, keeping his hands in his pocket. “Thank you, Alexis. I won’t be in the office tomorrow, so I will see you on Friday. From there, I will take you on set. The filming will be during the day.”
“Okay. I look forward to it.” I tried to stay professional for fear of showing appearing too excited. Try as I might, I simply couldn’t hide my childish grin.
Chapter 5
Alexis was watching from behind the
camera. It was our fourth take for the one pose, and I was growing frustrated. One of my selected clients couldn’t get the pose in sync with the other three. I wondered about giving Alexis a chance at the position.
“Julia, perhaps you’ve not conquered this pose yet? I need all of you to have complete balance in order to stay in sync with one another. Balance and continuity are important for this video,” I coached her.
“I think I’m just tired,” she remarked. “What would you like for me to do if I can’t hold this pose in balance with everyone else?”
She was a kind lady, very gentle and understanding. I really didn’t want to hurt her feelings, but it seemed crucial to remove her from the scene. “I admire your expertise and talent. I really do. However, I have a young lady that’s observing today, and she may have this pose perfected. If she doesn’t, I will have to figure something else out.”
She looked at Alexis. “She looks camera ready as it is,” she smiled. “I understand.” She handled the disappointment professionally.
“Alexis!” I yelled her name and waved her over. She looked surprised but jumped up immediately. “Come here!”
“Yes?” she asked, beaming at me with those bright blue eyes.
“Do you have this pose perfected?” I asked, hoping she wouldn’t let me down.
“I do. At least, I believe that I do. I use the pose all the time in my regular routine.”
“If I give you the outfit, can you show me? Julia has difficulty maintaining the pose in sync with the others.” I hoped that it wouldn’t make her too nervous.
Her eyes widened with excitement. “I can try,” she answered. “Does this mean that I would be on the DVD?”
“If you can prove to me that you can do it, yes. Think you can?”
“Yes!” she exclaimed. My crew gave her a matching Yoga outfit and she joined the mat next to the others. On mark and cue, she successfully held and maintained the pose in perfect unity with the other three members.
