If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.

If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.

  (Psalm 139:1-10)

We may not know, but the LORD does. My prayers are with you.

They had, uh, Strauss waltzes where you, pivoted on one toe.

  W: Really!

  All that fancy stuff.

W: Cool!…. Did you ever, uh, skate with Grandma, or was that past the time.

That was past the time. This was all before World War II.

  W: Yeah.

Well, I did a—I did a few after. And after we were married, why, she neither skated nor danced.

  W: Awww! Come on, Grandma!

  Nor hiked.

  W: Uhhh.

  Didn’t hike well, anyway.

  W: Right… Darn it……

  Just a Mormon mama……

W: Well, I guess you got what you were after! Now Gramps, I noticed you don’t have a wedding ring! I never noticed that before!

  What?

  W: No wedding ring!

I had three wedding rings, I lost them all… I thought: That’s it.

  W: Yep!

Why? Because you can’t wear a wedding ring when you’re doin carpentry.

  W: Nope!

Why? Because it’ll snag on a nail and pull your finger off.

  W: Yeah!

You can’t wear a wedding ring when you’re doin auto mechanics.

  W: Nope!

Why? Because you’ll get it on the battery cable, and burn your finger off… So me a carpenter, with a flair for fixing cars, didn’t have a chance.

  W: Nope!…. What happened to Grandma’s ring?

I don’t know which of the girls got the… diamond… Two diamonds. A diamond and a { } ring, so one of them, coulda gotten away with, with each… The wedding ring, they—well, the wedding band they couldn’t get off.

  W: Oh.

Her finger. They said: We can’t get it off without cutting it! I said, Leave it on.

  W: Oh…….

M: Have you ever been to Hood River?

  Several times.

  M: What’d you do there?

  Saw my girlfriend there.

  M: Ahhh. Ada Vee?

  Ada Vee.

  W: She’s quite a looker.

Ada Vee Webber… Fact I, danced the opening dance with her at the… Gold and Green Ball in Portland.

  W: Nice!

  In my army uniform.

  M: What’s Hood River like?

I would say it’s the most desirable place to live in the whole country.

  M: Really.

It’s juuust right. Just far enough up the canyon, so it’s not too wet, and it’s not too dry.

W: Nice!…….Yeah, except Oregon has high property tax. Darn it.

Well, I’m just talkin about… livin.

  W: Yeah.

M: So what did you do there?

  What did I do?

M: When you were visiting Hood River.

Well, I, made love to Ada Vee!

  W: [laughs]

  M: Oh, did you!

  W: In your mind! [laughs]

It was apple season, and so… there were apples to be picked, and apples to be… yarded! That is, the box of apples had to be… pulled by tractor back to the… barn or whatever.

W: Could you go down there and pick up seasonal work?

No, I just dropped in there on leave from the army. This was during the war. And then soon after I left… she married a sailor.

  W: Uh! Terrible!

  M: Tragedy.

Terrible. The story of my life… The girl who lived across the street up on the glacial moraine joined the WACs quote to support me! During the war. And she married a sailor. Some support!

W: Why do the sailors get all the chicks? What’s the deal there!

Well, I think they think they’re more, revered for their romance or something, I don’t know.

  W: Hmmm.

  I don’t know……

  W: Who knows………………

I remember goin with Ada Vee up to, uh, Celilo Falls which, has now been covered with the dam behind, uh—Bonneville Dam… And uh, buying, a, salmon from an Indian up there. Celilo Falls there’s a, lot of rocks, blocking the river. And causing the falls, and, so they built a, kind of a walkway—the Indians built kind of a walkway out into the river and they—and very long spears on, I guess, mangrove poles or something—and they’d spear the salmon as they were… spawning. Coming up the river. I remember buying a big salmon.

W: How big would it be?

  Oh… big enough……

M: That must have been a good day.

  Yeah… Little more adventure.

  M: Pretty girl… salmon…

  Yeah.

  M: water falls.

Yeah. Did I show you her picture? I’ve still got it.

  M: Yeah.

W: Well, you don’t still got it ’cause now we’ve got it!

  Have you?

W: Yeah, because I forgot to bring it back with me.

  Oh. OK.

  W: But we scanned it.

I visited Hood River again two, uh—well, maybe a couple of times. And I remember, uh, riding into Hood River from, uh, La Grande, on a freight train. And uh… did I tell you that story?

  W: No!

Well, a friend of mine, when we were fourteen… fourteen years old, we decided, my friend and I, we were going to hitchhike over to Idaho to see my cousins. And uh… so we hitchhiked and hitchhiked and we stopped somewhere in Eastern Washington to pick strawberries and get fifty cents for our pockets and… finally we got up in the Blue Mountains. Couldn’t get a ride. And uh, so we hiked most of the way over the Blue Mountains.

  W: What!

And, uh, finally got a ride with a fisherman. Who was going to La Grande.

W: Well, that’s not in Idaho!

Well, I know, it’s on the way, though. And, so we got to La Grande, we went out to the hot springs, and uh, slept. And the mosquitos were just terrible. Had to pull our heads into our sleeping bags to get any… any sleep at all. So we changed our plan, we decided we’d gone far enough. And uh, were going to go back home. So we went down to the railyards in La Grande, to uh, see what was cookin. And
that same fisherman was a, engineer on a locomotive goin west! So he says, Which way are you boys goin this morning! I say, Well, we’re goin west; he says, Well, there’s that, uh, flatcar load of steel girders going to, going to, uh, Hood River. For the dam. Why don’t you climb aboard? Now, he says, be kind of quiet going through Pendleton because the cops there are pretty severe. So we did… We got to uh Hood River, and he said, Well, we’re dropping off this car here! But there’s some, some cars in boxes—automobiles in boxes—goin on to Portland. So, climb aboard! [laughs]

  W: Wow!

So we rode to Portland and then we hitchhiked back to Seattle.

W: That was a total adventure

  for a couple fourteen-year-olds.

  Yeah.

  W: What’d you eat?

  END OF ACT I

  (PREVIOUSLY)

When Jove looked down on earth all that he saw

Was a stilled ocean and on a mountain shelf

  One man, one woman.

  Of many thousands sent

To untimely death, only this gentle innocent

And his bride were left to praise the fortunate

  Will of God.

Jove swept the clouds aside and made

A channel where the North Wind opened heaven:

And earth again looked upward to the sky,

Again the heavens showered earth with light.

Then even the distant reaches of the seas

Fell quiet and to soothe the rocking waters

Neptune let fall his triple-headed spear.

Then ocean’s master called to sea-wreathed Triton

Who at echo of Neptune’s voice came from the sea

Like a tower of sea-green beard, sea creatures,

Sea shells, grey waters sliding from his green shoulders

To sound his horn, to wind the gliding rivers

Back to their sources, back to rills and streams.

At Neptune’s order Triton lifted up

His curved sea shell, a trumpet at his lips

Which in the underworld of deepest seas

Sounds Triton’s music to the distant shores

  Behind the morning and the evening suns;

And as his voice was heard through land and ocean

The floods and rivers moved at his command.

Over all earth the shores of lakes appeared

Hillsides and river banks, wet fields and meadow,

As floods receded and quays came into view:

  A cliff, then a plateau, a hill, a meadow,

As from a tomb a forest rose and then

One saw trees with lean seaweeds tangled

Among their glittering leaves and wave-tossed boughs.

  It was a world reborn

  but Deucalion

Looked out on silent miles of ebbing waters.

He wept, called to his wife,

  Dear sister, friend,

  O last of women, look at loneliness;

As in our marriage bed our fears, disasters

  Are of one being, one kind, one destiny;

We are the multitudes that walk the earth

  Between sunrise and

  sunset of the world,

  And we alone inherit wilderness.

The living are lost beneath a dwindling sea.

Even the ledge of mountain where we stand

  May drop to darkness;

  and even the brief shadow

Of clouds that drift and fade

is the return Of midnight to the terror in

  my heart.

  And you, dear soul,

  what if

  what if

  what if

  What if the Fates

  had swept

  You

  on these pale rocks alone,

  to whom would you

  Confess your grief, your tears?

For if wild sea had cl
