“That was Monique,” Charlotte objected.
“I did better at Aden,” he went on, “but then you promptly wanted to go back to England.”
“I thought you were in love with Monique,” she said.
His eyes danced.
“And may one ask if that was why you were always accusing me of flirting?” he asked innocently.
“Oh, Nick,” she pleaded, “don’t tease me! I love you so very much—and I should be flattered if you would flirt with me now,” she ended bravely.
His grey eyes darkened dramatically and he drew her closer. “Now that is quite an invitation!” he said.
Neither of them heard Jock come up on deck, escaping from the couple down below, but they both heard the yelp of his strong New Zealand voice at once disgusted and delighted.
“Good lord! What is this? A honeymoon cruise?” he asked.
