The Hangman murders stopped, but in the early spring, a gardener made a grisly discovery. While working in a garden near Battery Park, he found a newspaper wrapping that contained a worn pair of shoes with rubber soles, a long serrated knife and a cloth with dried blood on it.
This story never made it into the papers, although the police filed it away with the rest of the evidence collected for the Hangman murders. At the same time, a small story appeared on the back cover of the local paper about a gift of several hundred dollars being anonymously donated to the hospital.
Once Velma and Lamont had cleaned out the front room and bedroom upstairs, they found new tenants: their son-in-law and his new wife.
