Maggie Lee | Book 25 | The Hitwoman Owes A Favor

“At the moment,” he muttered. “Can you walk?”
“I can carry her,” Patrick offered, jealousy sharpening his tone.
“If she needs carrying, I’ll do it,” Gino countered angrily.
“I can walk,” I told them both, despite swaying weakly.
They each grabbed one of my arms and hustled me away.
DeeDee bounded up to us. “Sleeping.”
“Not that way,” I protested to the men on either side of me. “That’s the way the ninjas went. We need to let them do their clean-up unimpeded.”
“The ninjas?” Gino asked.
“Did you see them?” Patrick wanted to know.
“It’s always ninjas,” I told them.
“Did your bird tell you that, too?” Gino whispered in my ear.

Most of the household was asleep when I crept inside with DeeDee and God a few hours later. Griswald was sitting in the living room. He had a book open on his lap, so it would look like he’d been reading, but I knew he’d been waiting for me.
Piss was curled up at his feet. “Welcome home, sugar.”
“How’s your father?” Griswald asked quietly.
“Doing a lot better.” It was the truth.
He ran an appraising gaze over me. I was thankful that Gino had taken me to a 24-hour super store and bought me an entire outfit, including a bra for God to hang out in.
“Surprised the hospital let you stay this late,” Griswald said finally.
I shrugged, not wanting to lie to him. “Did you ever find out why he wanted to meet with you?”
Griswald shook his head and looked away. “Afraid not.”
I frowned, knowing that was a lie. He was keeping secrets.
Then again, so was I.
It wasn’t like I could tell him about the ninjas. Gino and Patrick had been there, and I got the impression they didn’t want to believe in them.
But I knew that Ms. Whitehat had sent them to protect my family.
On the one hand, I was grateful. On the other, I really hated the idea I owed another favor.
