She and the host chatted, touching briefly on the personal tragedy she had suffered only two years before which caused her to remove herself from the public eye. Karla brushed away a tear as she spoke about the healing value of classic films, especially ones depicting strong, independent women doing whatever they can to better themselves. The words nearly brought the host to tears, and caused the studio audience to give the great star a standing ovation. She bowed graciously and humbly before making one of her usual jokes to lighten the mood and get back to discussing the film.

Only a few of the men stayed to watch Mildred Pierce to the end. Most went back to their respective cells, lacking the stomach for it after what they had seen: the hideous laughing attack that had overcome Warren, and then the thrashing of his body that became so violent Stanford and several others had to restrain him to keep him from injuring himself.

Warren spent a week in the infirmary. Eventually, he recovered, but the Friday night classic movies were abandoned, and the action movies returned to the bill. Warren usually spent those nights alone, quietly reading in his cell till it was time for lights-out.

  THE END

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

None of my creative endeavors would be possible without the consistent and loving support of my husband. I owe him the world. Also, I wish to thank my family for giving me a rich environment in which to grow where creativity was as natural as breathing, and especially my mother who instilled in me a love of horror, and who taught me, “It’s fun to be scared.”
